Second and final edition of a work first published in 1726. Appointed by the Crown commissioners of sewers were empowered to levy taxes to support their work and enact and enforce laws relating to watercourses land reclamation and structures such as dams. There is an line penned in ink to the right of the title and the rear cover leaf is nearly detached though present. 20 pages illustrated with a headpiece featuring lady justice holding a scale in one hand and a sword in the other set within an oval in a floral decorated panel with a cherub at each side. There are a couple of minor creases to the corners and a tiny chip to the front edge of one leaf. Very good. <p>RARE. First only edition.<p>The work is a University of Giessen thesis. It is in the form of 11 theses followed by a response.<p>Johann Gottfried von Meiern 1664-1721 was a German lawyer and historian. In 1718 he became Professor extraordinarius of law at the University of Giessen. His professorship at Giessen was short-lived due to conflict with his colleagues over his belief in the theory of natural law. He returned to his hometown of Bayreuth in 1720. D.C. Rench was DeWitt Clinton Rench 1838-1861 from Washington Co. Md. who practiced law in Baltimore. After returning home in 1861 prior to enlisting with the Confederacy he went to Williamsport Md. on business for his father; there he was attacked by a mob and murdered in the street because of his support of the South. Binding is sturdy and attractive but reveals the usual signs of rubbing wear spots of discoloration etc. The tail cap of the spine and a couple small spots along the outer joint are carefully repaired/restored. Interior pages show some age toning scattered foxing and mild damp staining. Several leaves display crease marks. The inside front cover and front fly-leaf contain a name and date "Peleg Almys book 1798." This is probably Peleg Almy 1761-1854 who was a resident of Rhode Island. This is the fifth revision of the Rhode Island laws. The first edition which appeared in 1719 was the earliest printed edition of Rhode Island law. Maurice Margarot 1745-1815 was one of the founders of the London Corresponding Society which sought parliamentary reform in England. In 1793 he was arrested and charged with sedition. He was convicted and transported to New South Wales in May 1794. After his return to England in 1810 he testified regarding corruption in New South Wales. In Good Condition: disbound; first blank leaf and frontispiece portrait and last several leaves are partially detached; last 3 leaves have closed tear from the gutter; light soiling; a few pencilled marginal notations. This is only volume 9 of the original 12 volume set. The exterior leather is quite scuffed and worn particularly on the edges and corners. The spine area has a clear reinforcement library tape attached and the spine underneath shows the labels are missing as well as several large pieces. The internal binding of the text portion of the pages is good but both hinges at boards has also been reinforced with old library tape. There is some pulling/hinge cracking at the front end pages all the way up to the title page but everything is still attached - although the front end pages are pulling away at the top portion. The book appears complete and the book appears handwriting free no library markings etc. Pages are toned throughout the several areas showing various degrees of foxing. Scattered pages also have some smudge marks and minor chipping present.
