On Sept. 5 1755 William Anne Holles Earl of Essex 1732-1799 leased to John Minn of Little Fransham Norfolk County yeoman several small tracts of farmland including a pasture called Oxmere in Little Fransham of about 10 acres. Signed at the lower edge "Essex" with his seal. Signed by the witness on the outside: Francois Gonin. In Good Condition: 2 horizontal folds and 3 vertical folds; old dampstains along one edge and at 2 junctures of folds have resulted in reduced legibility in those locations and minor loss at one juncture; otherwise clean and crisp. unknown

Published anonymously by Quaker Joseph Besse who produced a number of important volumes recording the legal woes of early English and Welsh Quakers. This volume describes the prosecutions of Quakers from 1696 to 1736 in England and Wales arranged alphabetically by county. Quakers were prosecuted for refusing to pay the annual tithe one tenth of their income and other support for the Church of England. In Very Good- Condition: cover is rubbed; spine is sunned; leather is starting to separated at the head of the spine and lacking small section of leather at head of spine; first and last leaves have soiling of corners and light foxing; pages are otherwise clean and tight. The spine area has a clear reinforcement library tape attached and the spine underneath shows the labels are missing as well as several large pieces. The internal binding of the text portion of the pages is good but both hinges at boards has also been reinforced with old library tape. There is some pulling/hinge cracking at the front end pages all the way up to the title page but everything is still attached - although the front end pages are pulling away at the top portion. The book appears complete and the book appears handwriting free no library markings etc. Pages are toned throughout the several areas showing various degrees of foxing. Scattered pages also have some smudge marks and minor chipping present. Small 12mo pp 4 xlvi 232 a little age-toning and a few blemishes the endpapers and the first and last few pages have some browning around the margins overall however the contents are sound and tight contenporary full calf a little worn rubbed at the corners the spine dull some cracking at the joints but all firm. Child c. 1630/31 - 1699 was an English merchant and politician. He was an economist proponent of mercantilism and governor of the East India Company. He purchased Wanstead Manor in Essex in 1673 from the executors of Sir Robert Brooke and spent much money on laying out the grounds of the manor house Wanstead Hall. John Evelyn described him as "sordidly avaricious" !! Child's advocacy both by speech and by pen of the East India Company's claims to political power as well as to its right of restricting competition to its trade brought him to the notice of the shareholders. He was appointed a Director in 1677 rising to Deputy-Governor and finally became Governor of the East India Company in 1681. In this latter capacity he directed the Company's policy as if it were his own private business. He was a moderate in those days of the mercantile system and has sometimes been regarded as a sort of pioneer in the development of the free-trade doctrines of the 18th century. Though Child considered himself a proponent of the competitive market he simultaneously argued for a government-controlled interest rate and restricted trade among the colonies which would benefit England. One of three pamphlets William Law 1686-1761 contributed to the "Bangorian controversy" which erupted in 1717 when the bishop of Bangor Benjamin Hoadly delivered a sermon before the king in which he denied that the church had any doctrinal or disciplinary authority. In the war of words that ensued some 50 writers issued over 200 pamphlets. Law contributions in defense of church authority did much to bring him to public notice for the first time. A Practical Treatise upon Christian Perfection 1726 and A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life 1729 stern manuals for self-regulation and Christian conduct brought him some fame and the admiration of John Wesley among others though the two later quarreled. His later life and writings were strongly influenced by the German protestant mystic Jacob Boehme who was also an influence on William Blake. ESTC T172224. unknown

The first biography of the economic pioneer First edition of the first biography of Law whose financial schemes of an expanded paper money supply brought economic ruin to France yet paved the way for the modern credit economy. The biographer John Philip Wood was a local historian of Cramond where Law was born. He had "access to certain materials which are not now available" and "included a number of interesting genealogical and personal details in his book" though he "made no attempt to examine the 'system' objectively or even to analyse his subject's character in the light of his career" Hyde pp. 36 216. Both Antoin Murphy and James Buchan cite Wood's work in their scholarly biographies of Law although part of Wood's account of Law's genealogy is challenged by Murphy. The work was republished in an expanded edition in 1824. Quarto pp. 4 ii 48. Original stab-sewn blue wrappers edges uncut. Housed in 20th-century clamshell portfolio backed with earlier marbled paper. A scarce argument for the inheritance of John Stewart 7th Earl of Galloway 1736-1806 to give him a claim to the English peerage. Lord Galloway had already sat in the House of Lords as a Scottish representative peer and had done so since 1774 but faced re-election each parliament and lost his seat in the 1790 election. Whether on the strength of this argument or his service as a Lord of the Bedchamber Lord Galloway achieved his aim being created Baron Stewart of Garlies in the peerage of Great Britain in 1796 and thereby rejoining the Lords as a permanent member. Though anonymous this pamphlet was written by Eliezer Williams 1754-1820 chaplain and tutor to the Galloway family who had been enlisted to help investigate the pedigree. The table at the end mentions the death of Vice-Admiral Keith Stewart in March 1795 giving a terminus post quem for the publication. NLS and Hornel Gallery only in ESTC. ESTC T193376.
