Se da parte tedesca si continuano a nutrire illusioni di agevoli conquiste territoriali, da parte sovietica si guarda con estremo interesse alle prospettive rivoluzionarie apertesi sia in Germania che in Austria: l'ipotesi di una rivoluzione socialista nel cuore dell'Europa sembra a portata di mano e questo spiega l'orientamento di Trockij che, alla guida della delegazione sovietica, è convinto che ci siano le condizioni per respingere i diktat germanici. Le cose, com'è noto, andranno altrimenti, ma solo molti anni dopo Roman Rosdolsky fornirà, grazie a rigorose ricerche d'archivio, elementi inoppugnabili per la ricostruzione dei retroscena di quel cruciale snodo storico: la potente dirigenza socialdemocratica austriaca, mentre scagliava parole di fuoco contro la guerra, lavorava in realtà per impedire qualsiasi sbocco politico ai poderosi scioperi spontanei che squassavano il paese. Il volume curato da Antonio Moscato - che ripropone il saggio di Roman Rosdolsky - affronta un interrogativo classico della storiografia sulla Rivoluzione d'Ottobre. Protagonista della battaglia che ha visto il gruppo più autorevole dei dirigenti sovietici - Stalin, Zinovev, Kamenev, Bucharin - schierato contro le sue tesi, Trotskij è passato alla storia come il grande antagonista delle posizioni del Partito comunista dell'URSS e di quelle della III Internazionale dopo la morte di Lenin, quando si apre nel partito comunista bolscevico la discussione sulla possibilità di costruire il socialismo in un solo Paese. Una battaglia, però, combattuta a suon di citazioni: chi è più vicino e chi più fedele alle impostazioni di Lenin? "Questo libro è stato scritto tre decenni fa e pubblicato originariamente in portoghese e spagnolo (in Brasile e Argentina). Abbraccia poco più di mezzo secolo di storia, dalle origini dei primi gruppi trotskisti in America latina alla prima metà degli anni '80. Al momento della sua pubblicazione, sul tema non esistevano praticamente studi accademici o di qualsiasi altra natura. La principale eccezione era 'Trotskyism in Latin America' [1973], del prof. Robert J. Alexander (della Hoover Institution, nell'Università di Stanford, Usa), e un articolo di Pierre Broué nei Cahiers Léon Trotsky (che erano pubblicati in Francia sotto la direzione dello stesso Broué). Abbastanza poco, come si vede. La prima opera è essenzialmente un catalogo diviso per paesi e con varie imprecisioni (benché l'autore disponesse dei notevoli fondi documentali della Hoover Institution). Alexander, inoltre, non ha mai nascosto il suo anticomunismo militante. L'articolo di Broué, dal canto suo, riguardava solo il primo decennio di attività del movimento trotskista nel continente (1930-1940). Abbiamo redatto i testi che compongono questo nostro libro durante il periodo dell'ultima dittatura militare argentina (1976-1984), che ci ha costretti all'esilio in Francia e poi in Brasile (dove attualmente sono ordinario di Storia contemporanea nell'Università di São Paulo)."
