192084198Long Beach: Women's Non-Partisan Propaganda Committee ca 1920. Leaflet 19cm x 14cm 7-1/2" x 5-1/2". Bifolium 4pp; cover illustration; 2pp of text rear page with imprint only. Near Fine.

A plea to California women voters to support America's entry to the League of Nations. The cover graphic portrays a WW1 doughboy missing both his legs being carried into his home by a pair of mates. The interior text argues that the League of Nations at this time being actively opposed by the Republican majority in Congress was the only sure path to preventing a repeat of the horrors of the Great War. An interesting and fairly early attempt to mobilize the women's vote; equal suffrage had been granted in California in 1911. Rare; not separately catalogued in OCLC nor do we locate any other catalogued material produced by this organization. Women's Non-Partisan Propaganda Committee unknown

1951222708North Korea or China.: Korean People's Army or People's Volunteer Army. Circa1951-1953. Two double-sided leaflets. Darling I Will Dream: 21 x 15cm. Truth Will Out: 19 x 13cm. Both leaflets somewhat foxed and trifle soiled chipped with a little loss though still in good condition for what were most likely once-active leaflets in a warzone. Two propaganda leaflets intended to be dropped over UN Forces in Korea attempting to convince them to surrender and cooperate with the KPA and PVA. Each leaflet appeals to different modes of persuasion with one relying on an emotional appeal and the other from the perspective of logic.

'Darling I Will Dream That You Are Coming Back to Me This Christmas' is a typical example in the long-winded history of so-called 'counterfeit Christmas cards' that purport to show wistful appeals from sweethearts abandoned back home. The addition of the details of a supposedly deceased GI are intended to add credence to the letter's authenticity though a quick search reveals the soldier in question returned home after his successful tour of duty in Korea married his sweetheart and led out the rest of his life very well.

'Truth Will Out' is a very early example of the conflicting narratives that permeate the North Korean historiography of the Armistice Agreement - most retellings largely hinging on the portrayal of the American leadership as a gaggle of mercurial incompetents.

This particular account details a ceasefire negotiation in which General William K. Harrison abruptly walked out before waiting to hear General Nam Il's "very reasonable proposal". The ultimate purpose of this tale is to encourage UN Forces to passively revolt in protest. While the event did indeed take place in June 1952 in reality Harrison was not empowered to hear counter-proposals and called a recess before Nam Il had the opportunity to launch into what would have undoubtedly been an over-rehearsed propagandistic diatribe. D. Bruce Lockerbie the author of Harrison's biography theorised that the ultimate goal of the American delegation's walk-out was to not only deny the North Koreans a platform but also shock them which it evidently did. . 193711137Barcelona Spain: Comissariat de Propaganda Generalitat de Catalunya 1937. Near Fine. Propaganda poster listing 21 wartime rules of behavior to help the republican side achieve victory over the fascists during the Spanish Civil War. As follows: As with most of the Republican posters the colors of the anarchists and communists black and red figure prominently in the poster. Many of the prescriptions seem geared toward inexperienced soldiers. This feature of the prescriptions is no surprise since much of the soldiers fighting on the side of the Republicans were volunteers or militiamen who were not professionally trained soldiers.
The prescriptions on the poster are as follows: "Revolutionary enthusiasm plus discipline and good military organization will defeat the enemy. Without discipline the army is not powerful. Discipline is the unquestioning execution of the commander's orders. The commander should be the first in giving an example of discipline and making everything possible so that all orders from above are accomplished perfectly. Observe discipline in the line of fire! Cartridges are expensive! You should fire at fixed targets and only when the commander orders it. The infantry is the principal weapon. The artillery and air force complement the work of the infantry. No situation is critical when the enemy's infantry is weak. Know that the cavalry is dangerous only for those that move back. A brave and firm infantry can always put it in flight. You should not avoid enemy fire but you should take advantage of the situation in order to go on the offensive to attack it better and to fire against it with greater precision. Only he who attacks triumphs. The trenches are aid for the offensive. Always try to pass from defense to offense. The reconnaissance of enemy positions will save many forces. Do continuous reconnaissance. Communicate all that you discover to your commander. Bring every prisoner to your commander. Keep a tight link between the rearguard and the advance forces in order to prevent surprises and increase the force of your blow. One bad sentry lost Chapaief. Do not forget the sentries! Do not fear the attack of the enemy from behind since you can attack them in the same way. The tank without infantry is not dangerous. Attack tanks with grenades. Do not debilitate your attack in the presence of enemy planes. On the contrary intensify it. Attack the enemy infantry that advances behind enemy planes. Every commander of militias should make the most of their free time to instruct militiamen and they on their time should do everything possible to study. Learn to shoot with precision to understand maps and to identify with a locality. Do not speak of military subjects because the hated enemies are listening. Countrymen! By practicing good hygiene and cleanliness you avoid diseases more dangerous than the enemy." SC&A UC San Diego OCLC. Near fine. Single sheet color lithograph mostly red and black 30 x 23 cm. 1950179481Circa1950. Black and white photographic illustration with text lightly browned one small area horizontal central fold. Good copy. 13.4 x 19.3cm. This leaflet was one of a large number of propaganda documents produced by China and North Korea during the Korean War. Part of a series of black-and-white propaganda leaflets which appear to have been produced by the Chinese People's Volunteers the People's Republic of China forces supporting North Korea in the war it aims to convey the message that American prisoners of war were well treated and were in regular communication with their families back home. The printed text assures readers that POWs held by North Korean and Chinese forces will be repatriated soon after the armistice is signed whereas warns the leaflet Allied soldiers from the US Britain and other nations "will have to stay in Korea until the US Government makes up its mind to leave Korea to the Koreans." The photograph purports to show Mrs Christine Brown wife of Lt. Col Gerald Brown reading a letter from her husband who was a prisoner of war in Korea. Gerald Brown was in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Korea and spent almost 3 years as a prisoner of war. Lt. Col. Brown was in fact a Korean War POW who was later repatriated to the US but the authenticity of the photo cannot be verified.

The leaflets were generally distributed by plane or stuffed into artillery shells though propaganda from the Northern side was also sometimes left in no man's land to be picked up by US and other forces fighting on the UN/South Korean side. . unknown

1940216176Japan. 1940. Two coloured fan prints 27.5 x 26cm. Occasional light marks a little light browning. Very good. These two propaganda prints were created to make children's paper fans each carrying patriotic messages and delicately rendered in bright colors.

The first sheet features a young boy on a white horse blowing a bugle. A Japanese warplane is seen flying in the sky with the rising sun in the background. The caption urges people not to disclose any military secrets even to close friends. Additionally the lyrics of the 1940 nationalistic song "Kokumin Shingunka" are printed on the sheet.

The second sheet depicts an idyllic scene of children playing by a lake catching dragonflies and fish. 1942218445Japan. Circa 1942. Colour illustrations 3 origami "balloons" 15 x 7cm very good. The first balloon features bold illustrations of warships soldiers in combat and artillery pieces transforming a simple toy into a celebration of military might. The second displays award-winning slogans from a 1942 national propaganda competition including the infamous "欲しがりません勝つまでは" "We shall not ask for anything until victory is won"—a mantra of homefront sacrifice. Most chilling is the third balloon's juxtaposition: cheerful scenes of children playing with pigeons are undercut by ominous warnings like "spies are on the train and everywhere" revealing how paranoia infiltrated even innocent imagery. . unknown

1918229271918. Nesbit Wilbur D. and Robert Speroy. Let's Keep the Glow in Old Glory And the Free in Freedom Too 1918 documents American patriotic culture during the final year of World War I when popular music functioned as a vehicle for national unity and wartime morale. Issued for domestic performance the piece supports research into American propaganda music history and visual culture demonstrating how commercial sheet music reinforced loyalty to the nation and framed military service as a collective moral obligation. The work situates the American flag as a central symbolic object linking civilian identity to wartime sacrifice and national purpose.

Nesbit Wilbur D. Lyrics. Speroy Robert. Music. Let's Keep the Glow in Old Glory And the Free in Freedom Too. Chicago and New York: McKinley Music Company / Frank K. Root & Co. 1918. Folio. Illustrated sheet music. The cover features an allegorical composition of a woman draped in the American flag holding a child positioned above advancing soldiers with fixed bayonets visually combining maternal imagery with military action. Interior pages present musical notation marked Tempo di Marcia aligning the composition with the rhythm of a military march. Lyrics call for national unity and vigilance with lines invoking "Columbia" and urging preservation of the "Red White and Blue" emphasizing honor sacrifice and global perception of the United States. The structure and presentation reflect the integration of visual symbolism and musical form to convey patriotic messaging to a broad audience in homes and community settings.
Folio format. Illustrated throughout. Moderate edge wear and corner softening light toning across sheets with scattered small stains and minor surface abrasions more visible at margins; interior pages clean and legible with strong notation and text clarity; overall good condition. Produced at a moment when music publishers actively contributed to wartime messaging the sheet provides material evidence of how popular song participated in shaping public sentiment offering value for the study of nationalism propaganda and cultural production in early twentieth-century America. unknown
1940224121Shanghai.: 上海裝鏡工業第二联營所. Shanghai jinggongye di'er lianyingsuo. Circa1940s - 1950s. Mirror with attached coloured image on paper under glass on reverse 10.5 x 15cm metal handle 15.5 x 17.5cm. Mirror a little stained and clouded at edges image browned at edges hanger rusty but still very functional. An interesting piece of 1950s propaganda. This portable travel mirror is a useful and decorative example of the sort of mass produced consumer items made in the early 1950s in small local workshops that were organised into collectives. Travel mirrors could be hung up or propped up for use by a moveable handle. On the reverse is a colour socialist-realist illustration of a red flag-draped locomotive a symbol of modern progress patriotism and peace. The colourful image of the train with its 天平商标 logo could be displayed when not in use or replaced with a photo with the mirror behind it.

In 1952 when China built its first domestically designed locomotive it was called the "Peace" series which we see written on the front of this engine with the image of a dove. China's involvement in the Korean War to 'resist US aggression and assist Korea' depended on strong logistical supply lines to the front. Trains therefore became symbolic of national unity strength and China's ability to protect regional peace. Many such travel mirrors were bought as gifts and given as morale boosting items to the Chinese troops who could insert family photographs under glass on the backs of their travel mirrors. . 上海裝鏡工業第二联營所. Octavo; red cloth hardcover; xix308pp. Spine darkened with mild soil to covers; endpapers toned from old jacket offsetting; text generally clean and unmarked; just a VG copy lacking the dustwrapper.

A low-point which is saying something in the corpus of British antisemitic propaganda masquerading as a disinterested examination of the "Jewish Problem" by the noted Franco-English Catholic writer and historian. In the most reasonable-sounding way Belloc puts forward an argument for the segregation of British Jews on the grounds that "the Catholic Church is the conservator of an age-long European tradition and that tradition will never compromise with the fiction that a Jew can be other than a Jew." Even in the context of pre-Hitlerian "passive" antisemitism it was and remains a foul little book albeit one that needs reading. SINGERMAN Antisemitic Propaganda 0129. Houghton Mifflin unknown

Unger" with 2 ink corrections. Attached is a typed single-spaced report on the 1934/35 Winterhilfswerk campaign filling a 2nd sheet of the same paper. Very good.
Marta Unger writes in English to a Mr. B. von Schenk in Hoboken New Jersey thanking him for his letter. "I was interested to read the article by Mrs. Ruth Frances Woodsmall about 'Women in the new Germany'. I met Mrs. Woodsmall last summer and showed her myself our German women work. But it is rather difficult to explain to people that what we want if the otherside stands on a quite different standpoint". She encloses a typed article in English about "our Winter Help Campaign 1934/35".
Dr. Marta Unger was born in Japan in 1903 to an American mother. Her family settled in Heidelberg Germany in 1908. After working in the Foreign Ministry in Berlin from 1924-26 and obtaining a doctorate of law at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University in Frankfurt she worked as a clerk in the Propaganda Ministry. In 1934 she was appointed head of the Foreign Affairs department of the Reichsfrauenfuhrung the post she held when she wrote this letter. In 1948 during the Wilhelmstrasse trial against German diplomats in Nuremberg Unger was part of the defense team of Ernst Woermann whom she later married. Woermann had been the ambassador to China.
The Winterhilfswerk was a program to help clothe feed and keep warm the needy during the winter months. An important part of its funding came from collection drives to which all good German citizens were expected indeed were relentlessly pressured to contribute. Unger's report shows the amounts spent on clothes and fuel and on bread flour potatoes and other staples. She also writes about the "godmother" program by which childless people would give meals clothes shoes and Christmas gifts to a needy child. Berlin: May 18th, 1935. hardcover
