1933214182東京. Tokyo.: 博文館. Hakubunkan. Showa 81933. Six colour card cutout sheets folded as issued 39 x 27cm original wrapper with instructions 28 x 21cm. Paper wrapper chipped and torn with a little loss now neatly repaired with washi. Instructions are complete and the card sheets are in very good condition. This papercraft diorama kit was issued as a supplement to the children’s magazine Tankai in April 1933. The kit recreates scenes from the Japanese attack outside Shanghai in February 1932. During the mission to break through the Chinese defence line three Japanese soldiers were killed and subsequently celebrated as national war heroes known as 爆弾三勇士 The Three Brave Bombing Soldiers. Their bravery was highly revered and they became symbols of courage and sacrifice.

The kit includes six platforms that when combined create a rising scene from the creek bed section. It depicts Japanese soldiers attacking Chinese buildings positioned on a hill supported by artillery and tanks. The set features numerous cutouts of Japanese soldiers in action while a smaller number of cutouts portray frightened Chinese fighters. Through this diorama young children learned about the conflict by recreating battle scenes and identifying with the war heroes during play. The kit not only served as a form of entertainment but also as a tool for instilling nationalistic pride and wartime ideology in the younger generation. . 博文館. [Hakubunkan]. unknown

1942175578Circa1942. Small airborne propaganda leaflet printed on one side only featuring a colour illustration. Appears to have been dropped during the Malayan Campaign. 14.6 x 19.8 cm creased and marked on the reverse. Image still very clear and strong. Airborne colour propaganda leaflet urges the British troops to surrender to Japan. The rather oddly worded text reads:

"Iron-rationed. Stranded.
Nothing but dog biscuits.
Day after day positively.
How about a dish of salad like this
For a change of diet. just a change of mind".

The image shows three figures two of whom are identifiable as British soldiers in a desperate situation on a small piece of land possibly representing Singapore. In the distance their warships are burning. A plate of salad which dominates the image looks enticingly fresh and colourful albeit rather surprising that the Japanese military propaganda believed salad would motivate the soldiers to surrender! Similar messages published and dropped by the Allies were distributed to Japanese troops in Japanese towards the end of the Pacific War with the same aim in mind.

Although we have not been able to identify the area depicted with absolute certainty we believe this leaflet was likely dropped during the Malayan Campaign rather than Guadalcanal as we have seen it attributed to. Our reasons for this include the leaflet showing British soldiers whereas American servicemen were primarily involved in Guadalcanal. The burning ships offshore seem to fit more with the sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse particularly as only two are depicted and they are being destroyed by what seem to be land-based bombers not other ships or carrier-based aircraft. Likewise at the late stage in the Pacific War that the Guadalcanal Campaign took place Japan was no longer in a position where they could cope with POWs nor were they likely to be in a position to print colour leaflets or distribute them.

Commonly airborne leaflets were used over land battles rather than in naval battles. . unknown

Movie Front of House/Lobby card 28 x 35.7 cms inset sepia photographic still from the film surrounded by a red border with the movie title in yellow a white dragon curling above the title in very good condition. Striking Front of House/Lobby card for a 1955 film produced at the height of anti-Communism in the West.

The byline for the film was lurid: "Swooping down from the North they ceated a brutal Reign of Terror" and as The Movie Database TMDB notes the film was "culled from footage of a Hindi film titled 'The Journey of Dr. Kotnis.' Producer Lloyd Friedgen added real and staged footage of wartime atrocities." It played to both American and Indian suspicions about the rise of China and appeared the year after Nehru's visit to Beijing.

During the Communist Revolution in China a young Indian physician Dr Dwarkanath Kotnis Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre aids the resistance movement working against the development of germ warfare by Communist doctors and develops a serum then meets and courts a Chinese girl Ching Lan Jayashree. . 192285914Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1922. First American Edition. First printing. Published the same year in London Constable. Octavo; red cloth hardcover; xix308pp. Spine darkened with mild soil to covers; endpapers toned from old jacket offsetting; text generally clean and unmarked; just a VG copy lacking the dustwrapper.

A low-point which is saying something in the corpus of British antisemitic propaganda masquerading as a disinterested examination of the "Jewish Problem" by the noted Franco-English Catholic writer and historian. In the most reasonable-sounding way Belloc puts forward an argument for the segregation of British Jews on the grounds that "the Catholic Church is the conservator of an age-long European tradition and that tradition will never compromise with the fiction that a Jew can be other than a Jew." Even in the context of pre-Hitlerian "passive" antisemitism it was and remains a foul little book albeit one that needs reading. SINGERMAN Antisemitic Propaganda 0129. Houghton Mifflin unknown

19415699Washington DC 1941. Very good plus. 51pp. Original self wrappers. Soft horizontal crease. A slip-bill printing of the Gillette Propaganda Exposure Bill of 1941 proposed by Iowa Senator Guy Gillette. The bill sought "to protect the integrity of the democratic process by requiring disclosure of persons writing publishing and circulating scurrilous literature in connection with political campaigns; to deny the use of the mails to such literature and to prohibit its importation into the United States in default of such disclosure; and for other purposes." The text of the bill opens by attempting to outlaw "all published matter" which causes "public hatred or contempt" for any American citizen "because of race religion descent or nationality" during national elections and those in Hawaii Alaska and Puerto Rico. The bill also sought to establish an Office of Minority Relations to enforce the law and provided penalties to anyone breaking the new law. The final line of the bill states that it should be referred to as the "Propaganda Exposure Act 1941." Calling for honesty fairness and equal treatment in American political elections It'll never pass and it didn't. unknown

1944888911944. JAPANESE PROPAGANDA Asahi Shimbunsha. SAKURA. Volume 6 #2 #31 overall. Large wrappered staple bound illustrated photomagazine in the tradition of FRONT and HOMELIFE. This number published in February of 1944 celebrated the plans for a cross continental railway to cross Eurasia from Tokyo to Berlin complete with an undersea tunnel from Japan to the mainland. SAKURA magazine was written in English Chinese and French. The whole world seems to lay at the feet of the Axis in this rosy scenario as sketched throughout the magazine. East Asia under the guidance of Imperial Japan is on the march to build a new world. Yet by February of 1944 the Red Army was in Poland and the Ukraine Sevastopol was cut off times were bleak for the 1000 year Reich indeed. Closer to home the Allies had "turned the corner" in the Western Pacific had isolated the large Japanese force at Rabaul and were headed north towards the homeland. At some point during the war reality and appearance began a rapid divergence and as the end approached it became all pure delusion. All of which does not obviate what an amazing visual feast SAKURA is from the covers to the ads a consistent message of normalcy progress and steadfast purpose in a great task. unknown
1940216176Japan. 1940. Two coloured fan prints 27.5 x 26cm. Occasional light marks a little light browning. Very good. These two propaganda prints were created to make children's paper fans each carrying patriotic messages and delicately rendered in bright colors.

The first sheet features a young boy on a white horse blowing a bugle. A Japanese warplane is seen flying in the sky with the rising sun in the background. The caption urges people not to disclose any military secrets even to close friends. Additionally the lyrics of the 1940 nationalistic song "Kokumin Shingunka" are printed on the sheet.

The second sheet depicts an idyllic scene of children playing by a lake catching dragonflies and fish. The boys are portrayed in more active roles while the girls hold a bucket or a cage. The message on this sheet reads "East Asia's Future is Bright and Children are Thriving." A warplane can be seen in the sky in the far distance subtly tying the peaceful scene to the wartime context. . unknown
1951222708North Korea or China.: Korean People's Army or People's Volunteer Army. Circa1951-1953. Two double-sided leaflets. Darling I Will Dream: 21 x 15cm. Truth Will Out: 19 x 13cm. Both leaflets somewhat foxed and trifle soiled chipped with a little loss though still in good condition for what were most likely once-active leaflets in a warzone. Two propaganda leaflets intended to be dropped over UN Forces in Korea attempting to convince them to surrender and cooperate with the KPA and PVA. Each leaflet appeals to different modes of persuasion with one relying on an emotional appeal and the other from the perspective of logic.

'Darling I Will Dream That You Are Coming Back to Me This Christmas' is a typical example in the long-winded history of so-called 'counterfeit Christmas cards' that purport to show wistful appeals from sweethearts abandoned back home. The addition of the details of a supposedly deceased GI are intended to add credence to the letter's authenticity though a quick search reveals the soldier in question returned home after his successful tour of duty in Korea married his sweetheart and led out the rest of his life very well.

'Truth Will Out' is a very early example of the conflicting narratives that permeate the North Korean historiography of the Armistice Agreement - most retellings largely hinging on the portrayal of the American leadership as a gaggle of mercurial incompetents.

This particular account details a ceasefire negotiation in which General William K. Harrison abruptly walked out before waiting to hear General Nam Il's "very reasonable proposal". The ultimate purpose of this tale is to encourage UN Forces to passively revolt in protest. While the event did indeed take place in June 1952 in reality Harrison was not empowered to hear counter-proposals and called a recess before Nam Il had the opportunity to launch into what would have undoubtedly been an over-rehearsed propagandistic diatribe. D. Bruce Lockerbie the author of Harrison's biography theorised that the ultimate goal of the American delegation's walk-out was to not only deny the North Koreans a platform but also shock them which it evidently did. . 1950179481Circa1950. Black and white photographic illustration with text lightly browned one small area horizontal central fold. Good copy. 13.4 x 19.3cm. This leaflet was one of a large number of propaganda documents produced by China and North Korea during the Korean War. Part of a series of black-and-white propaganda leaflets which appear to have been produced by the Chinese People's Volunteers the People's Republic of China forces supporting North Korea in the war it aims to convey the message that American prisoners of war were well treated and were in regular communication with their families back home. The printed text assures readers that POWs held by North Korean and Chinese forces will be repatriated soon after the armistice is signed whereas warns the leaflet Allied soldiers from the US Britain and other nations "will have to stay in Korea until the US Government makes up its mind to leave Korea to the Koreans." The photograph purports to show Mrs Christine Brown wife of Lt. Col Gerald Brown reading a letter from her husband who was a prisoner of war in Korea. Gerald Brown was in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Korea and spent almost 3 years as a prisoner of war. Lt. Col. Brown was in fact a Korean War POW who was later repatriated to the US but the authenticity of the photo cannot be verified.

The leaflets were generally distributed by plane or stuffed into artillery shells though propaganda from the Northern side was also sometimes left in no man's land to be picked up by US and other forces fighting on the UN/South Korean side. . unknown
19424754Washington DC: El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos 1942. Very good. Pictorial lithograph 20 x 14.25 inches printed in red gray yellow and black. Minor surface wear mild creasing light dust-soiling a few pinholes. A rare poster issued by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs CIAA during World War II attempting to sway public opinion in Latin America to the Allied side. The CIAA was established by executive order in July 1941 in order to distribute news advertising film reels and more to and from Latin America to counter Italian and German propaganda campaigns in the region. The text of the present poster translates from the Spanish as "Freedom of Speech. One of the four freedoms for which the Allies are fighting." The central image features an open-mouthed face breaking open a large swastika which is itself on fire. A mildly subtle message that free speech destroys fascism. The poster was designed by noted Russian-American graphic designer and photographer Alexey Brodovitch whose printed credit appears at top right; Brodovitch is most well-known for his art direction of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958. A powerful visual display with only one copy reported in OCLC at MOMA though we also find two other institutional holdings at the United States Holocaust Museum and the Hoover Institute.
