1940224121Shanghai.: 上海裝鏡工業第二联營所. Shanghai jinggongye di'er lianyingsuo. Circa1940s - 1950s. Mirror with attached coloured image on paper under glass on reverse 10.5 x 15cm metal handle 15.5 x 17.5cm. Mirror a little stained and clouded at edges image browned at edges hanger rusty but still very functional. An interesting piece of 1950s propaganda. This portable travel mirror is a useful and decorative example of the sort of mass produced consumer items made in the early 1950s in small local workshops that were organised into collectives. Travel mirrors could be hung up or propped up for use by a moveable handle. On the reverse is a colour socialist-realist illustration of a red flag-draped locomotive a symbol of modern progress patriotism and peace. The colourful image of the train with its 天平商标 logo could be displayed when not in use or replaced with a photo with the mirror behind it.

In 1952 when China built its first domestically designed locomotive it was called the "Peace" series which we see written on the front of this engine with the image of a dove. China's involvement in the Korean War to 'resist US aggression and assist Korea' depended on strong logistical supply lines to the front. Trains therefore became symbolic of national unity strength and China's ability to protect regional peace. Many such travel mirrors were bought as gifts and given as morale boosting items to the Chinese troops who could insert family photographs under glass on the backs of their travel mirrors. . 上海裝鏡工業第二联營所. Paper wrapper chipped and torn with a little loss now neatly repaired with washi. Instructions are complete and the card sheets are in very good condition. This papercraft diorama kit was issued as a supplement to the children’s magazine Tankai in April 1933. The kit recreates scenes from the Japanese attack outside Shanghai in February 1932. During the mission to break through the Chinese defence line three Japanese soldiers were killed and subsequently celebrated as national war heroes known as 爆弾三勇士 The Three Brave Bombing Soldiers. Their bravery was highly revered and they became symbols of courage and sacrifice.

The kit includes six platforms that when combined create a rising scene from the creek bed section. It depicts Japanese soldiers attacking Chinese buildings positioned on a hill supported by artillery and tanks. The set features numerous cutouts of Japanese soldiers in action while a smaller number of cutouts portray frightened Chinese fighters. Through this diorama young children learned about the conflict by recreating battle scenes and identifying with the war heroes during play. The kit not only served as a form of entertainment but also as a tool for instilling nationalistic pride and wartime ideology in the younger generation. . 博文館. [Hakubunkan]. unknown

Good copy. This print from a highly symbolic painting done in a modern impressionist style by 张长清 Zhang Changqing would have been a wall poster for use in upper primary classrooms with the aim of encouraging children to strive to be heroes and to achieve. Behind the children is an image of the 1986 Laoshan Hero Commemorative Medal 八一金星配三色绶带 . The girl is holding a text or notebook with the words Laoshan on the cover symbolising sacrifice bravery and usually that the bearer had somehow contributed to the Laoshan war effort but in this case possibly a textbook about Laoshan and the need to learn from the heroes of that military campaign. . 重庆出版社. 1942218445Japan. Circa 1942. Colour illustrations 3 origami "balloons" 15 x 7cm very good. The first balloon features bold illustrations of warships soldiers in combat and artillery pieces transforming a simple toy into a celebration of military might. The second displays award-winning slogans from a 1942 national propaganda competition including the infamous "欲しがりません勝つまでは" "We shall not ask for anything until victory is won"—a mantra of homefront sacrifice. Most chilling is the third balloon's juxtaposition: cheerful scenes of children playing with pigeons are undercut by ominous warnings like "spies are on the train and everywhere" revealing how paranoia infiltrated even innocent imagery. . unknown

1941189981941. Broadside issued in 1941 by the Emergency Committee to Stop Deportations to the Sahara Desert articulating an urgent appeal against the forced deportation of anti-fascist refugees by the Vichy French government during the early years of the Second World War. Written by Edward K. Barsky a leading figure in the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee the document calls on American citizens to intervene diplomatically by contacting both the French Embassy in Washington D.C. and the U.S. Secretary of State. The broadside documents contemporary awareness of mass deportations and forced labor policies under the Pétain regime describing plans to remove large numbers of refugees-including veterans of the Spanish Civil War members of the International Brigades and political exiles from across Europe-to labor camps connected to the Trans-Saharan Railroad. The text situates these actions within broader patterns of repression highlighting the targeting of anti-fascist populations and the international composition of those affected. As such the document provides primary-source evidence of early wartime advocacy efforts in the United States responding to refugee persecution and authoritarian policies in Vichy-controlled territories.

Single-page printed broadside. New York: Emergency Committee to Stop Deportations to the Sahara Desert 1941. Measuring approximately 10.25 x 8 inches. Printed in black text within a ruled border on brown paper. 193711137Barcelona Spain: Comissariat de Propaganda Generalitat de Catalunya 1937. Near Fine. Propaganda poster listing 21 wartime rules of behavior to help the republican side achieve victory over the fascists during the Spanish Civil War. As follows: As with most of the Republican posters the colors of the anarchists and communists black and red figure prominently in the poster. Many of the prescriptions seem geared toward inexperienced soldiers. This feature of the prescriptions is no surprise since much of the soldiers fighting on the side of the Republicans were volunteers or militiamen who were not professionally trained soldiers.
The prescriptions on the poster are as follows: "Revolutionary enthusiasm plus discipline and good military organization will defeat the enemy. Without discipline the army is not powerful. Discipline is the unquestioning execution of the commander's orders. The commander should be the first in giving an example of discipline and making everything possible so that all orders from above are accomplished perfectly. Observe discipline in the line of fire! Cartridges are expensive! You should fire at fixed targets and only when the commander orders it. The infantry is the principal weapon. The artillery and air force complement the work of the infantry. No situation is critical when the enemy's infantry is weak. Know that the cavalry is dangerous only for those that move back. A brave and firm infantry can always put it in flight. You should not avoid enemy fire but you should take advantage of the situation in order to go on the offensive to attack it better and to fire against it with greater precision. Only he who attacks triumphs. The trenches are aid for the offensive. Always try to pass from defense to offense. The reconnaissance of enemy positions will save many forces. Do continuous reconnaissance. Communicate all that you discover to your commander. Bring every prisoner to your commander. Keep a tight link between the rearguard and the advance forces in order to prevent surprises and increase the force of your blow. One bad sentry lost Chapaief. Do not forget the sentries! Do not fear the attack of the enemy from behind since you can attack them in the same way. The tank without infantry is not dangerous. Attack tanks with grenades. Do not debilitate your attack in the presence of enemy planes. On the contrary intensify it. Attack the enemy infantry that advances behind enemy planes. Every commander of militias should make the most of their free time to instruct militiamen and they on their time should do everything possible to study. Learn to shoot with precision to understand maps and to identify with a locality. Do not speak of military subjects because the hated enemies are listening. Countrymen! By practicing good hygiene and cleanliness you avoid diseases more dangerous than the enemy." SC&A UC San Diego OCLC. Near fine. Single sheet color lithograph mostly red and black 30 x 23 cm. 193534063Berlin: May 18th 1935. 1935. Very good. - 88 words typed on sheet of cream paper 11-5/8 inches high by 8-1/4 inches wide with her name & address typed at the top. Signed "Dr. M. Unger" with 2 ink corrections. Attached is a typed single-spaced report on the 1934/35 Winterhilfswerk campaign filling a 2nd sheet of the same paper. The top corners of both sheets are creased with light creasing to their top & bottom edges. There is a paper-clip mark to the letter at bottom left. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.
Marta Unger writes in English to a Mr. B. von Schenk in Hoboken New Jersey thanking him for his letter. "I was interested to read the article by Mrs. Ruth Frances Woodsmall about 'Women in the new Germany'. I met Mrs. Woodsmall last summer and showed her myself our German women work. But it is rather difficult to explain to people that what we want if the otherside stands on a quite different standpoint". She encloses a typed article in English about "our Winter Help Campaign 1934/35".
Dr. Marta Unger was born in Japan in 1903 to an American mother. Her family settled in Heidelberg Germany in 1908. After working in the Foreign Ministry in Berlin from 1924-26 and obtaining a doctorate of law at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University in Frankfurt she worked as a clerk in the Propaganda Ministry. In 1934 she was appointed head of the Foreign Affairs department of the Reichsfrauenfuhrung the post she held when she wrote this letter. In 1948 during the Wilhelmstrasse trial against German diplomats in Nuremberg Unger was part of the defense team of Ernst Woermann whom she later married. Woermann had been the ambassador to China.
The Winterhilfswerk was a program to help clothe feed and keep warm the needy during the winter months. An important part of its funding came from collection drives to which all good German citizens were expected indeed were relentlessly pressured to contribute. Unger's report shows the amounts spent on clothes and fuel and on bread flour potatoes and other staples. She also writes about the "godmother" program by which childless people would give meals clothes shoes and Christmas gifts to a needy child. Berlin: May 18th, 1935. hardcover
1975156371Shanghai: Shanghai renmin chubanshe 1975. First international edition first printing of this scarce septalingual propaganda poster representing the unity of Communist China's ethnicities and classes. Designed by model workers in Shanghai it was released to promote the Campaign to Study the Dictatorship of the Proletariat - the last hurrah of the Cultural Revolution's revolutionary politics before Mao's death in 1976. Chinese posters from the 1970s are uncommon in such collectible condition. In this poster multiple figures are shown clutching a pamphlet published in 1975 titled Makesi Engesi Liening lun wuchan jieji zhuanzheng Marx Engels and Lenin on the Dictatorship of the Proletariat. With Mao ailing and more moderate economic reformers resurgent radical members of the Chinese Communist Party's leadership spearheaded a new campaign to study Marxist-Leninist theory and reinvigorate the Cultural Revolution. In keeping with the period's emphasis on collectivized cultural production the artwork was produced by amateur artists from Shanghai's Jing'an District Cultural Palace with assistance from Li Min and Hu Yiren two factory workers and You Longgu from the publisher Shanghai renmin chubanshe Shanghai People's Press. A domestic edition of 30000 copies was printed in tandem with this international edition distributed abroad by China's state bookstore. We have traced one institutional copy of this edition at Hong Kong Baptist University as well as a copy from the domestic print-run at the University of Westminster. Examples only occasionally appear in commerce. Poster 530 x 760 mm showing a group of revolutionary figures with a slogan lettered in yellow in Mandarin Mongolian Tibetan Romanized Uyghur Korean Romanized Kazakh and Pinyin.
