17760087821776. Near Fine -. 1 handwritten document of 4 pages 39 x 25 cm. folded. On 12 Dec. 1776 William Rowan of Fawn Township York Co. Pa. yeoman mortgaged 245 acres in Fawn Township to Beulah Paschall of the city of Philadelphia spinster for 300 pounds of Pennsylvania due by 12 Dec. 1783 with interest paid yearly. Signed by William Rowan; witnesses Peter Miller and Abraham Shoemaker; Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice Thomas Willing; and York County Recorder Samuel Johnston. Embossed paper stamp of Pennsylvania. The mortgagee was Beulah Paschall 1732-1793 a Philadelphia Quaker and owner of Cedar Grove. Thomas Willing 1731-1821 was a highly successful merchant and real estate developer as well as a Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice from 1767 to 1776. He served as the first president of both the Bank of North America and the Bank of the United States and supported the American Revolution. York County Recorder Samuel Johnston on the other hand had come to York County from England as an official representative of the Penn family. He held a variety of county offices at various times in addition to that of recorder of deeds: clerk of courts prothonotary and register of wills. When he refused to take the oaths of allegiance to Pennsylvania during the Revolution he had to relinquish all public offices. However he did not opposed the Revolution. Two of his sons-in-law served as colonels in the American militia and two of his sons were privates. By 1786 Johnston lived in Maryland and was admitted as an attorny in Baltimore County. Historical from the time period directly after the Revolutionary War when money collection was of high priority. Debt was in shillings just prior to when moving to US currency. Also includes receipt for payment of a debt in New York 1774.Both mounted in board under glass and frame. Remarkably bright and readable. Excellent piece of early Americana. Summons measures 8 x 6.25 inches. receipt 3 x 7.5 inches in frame measuring 11.5 x 9 inches.Printing and signatures bright and crisp light toning lines tatter to left edge and small cut to left lower corner unknown
1796049671Hartford CT: Hudson & Goodwin 1796. First 10 pages of introductory material absent including title page we determined title and age by matching to Evans 30260. Begins with six pages of index bdginning with L for Leather then proceeds to page enumerated as 1 which is The Charter of the antient Colony of Connecticut remaining pages present. Heavily worn sheep leather with black spine label spine split as is the text block many pages detached paper brittle many chips and tears very minor wormhole to bottom of the last 100 pages or so pages age-toned with some occasional spotting index pages that are present are browned and heavily chipped. Front free endpaper actually present and the faint offsetting from the missing title page confirms the title. Certainly no better than a binding or research copy. Hard Cover. 17379900042889Amsterdam: Zacherie Chatelain 1737. Leather Bound. Tall folio. Bound in full contemporary calf with seven raised bands and the spine ornamented in gilt. The binding shows minor wear but is otherwise strong and the contents are in remarkable condition. There is an elaborate engraved plate preceding the formal title page printed in red and black. Measures 47 x 29.5 cms. Zacherie Chatelain d.1723 was the father of Henri Abraham 1684-1743 and Zacherie Junior 1690-1754. They worked as a partnership publishing this atlas under several different Chatelain imprints depending on the Chatelain family partnerships at the time of publication. The original atlas was published in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720 with a second edition appearing in 1732. The maps were accompanied by information pertaining to cosmography geography history chronology genealogy topography heraldry and costume of the world. The maps in the Atlas Historique were based on those of the French cartographer Guillaume De L'Isle but were presented by the Chatelains in an encyclopedic format. The text is in French and is printed in two columns on the page with maps and other illustrations interspersed. Each map and table is numbered consecutively see MapHist dot com. Our offering is described as 'Tome II Seconde Partie ou Tome III' of the 'Nouvelle Edition' which has been 'Revue corrigee & considerablement augumentee'. Clean and fine. <br/><br/><em>First appearance of a groundbreaking paper in chemistry in which Lomonosov describes his discovery of the transition of a metal into passive state and this is the first scientific description of this phenomena. He observed and described fast termination of the dissolution of iron in concentrated nitric acid and attributed this to a change in the solvent properties."Lomonosov employed corpuscular mechanics in chemical explanations more extensively than Boyle had done. Treating chemical compounds as particles in adhesion he held that "adhesion is eliminated and renewed by means of motion.since no change in a body can take place withouy motion". He attempted to apply these theories to chemical phenomena - although he was limited to speculation- in papers on the action of chemical solvents in general."DSB VIII p. 469."Lomonosov was founder of Russian science and he would be universally recognized as a great pioneer of science had he been born a West European. Francis Hopkinson 1737-1791 a Signer of the Declaration of Independence and composer was tried in 1780 on charges of accepting bribes; he was acquitted. John Nicholson d. 1800 financier Comptroller General of Pennsylvania and land speculator was charged with financial irregularities in 1793; he was acquitted. A quite uncommon early American imprint noted for the portrait of Franklin by Bannerman. An incomplete copy came to auction in 2015 else the last copy at auction was 1916 according to RareBookHub. Front board detached; ownership signature Thomas Knight 1829 with four line note "Collection of Irish History from the reign of Elizabeth etc. front endpaper. Thomas Knight's name also written vertically accross top portion of title page. At the end of the half page of text on xii begins in a miniscule holograph hand presumed by Knight an account of Lady Davies who according to the preceeding Author's Life "had or pretended to have a spirit of prophecy" and it was reported that she predicted her husband's death the Sunday before his being found dead of an apoplexy on the morning of Thursday 8th of December 1626 just before his installation as Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench. The writing continues onto the next blank page printed oddly with only the words HISTORICAL RELATIONS the preceeding page also having the word HISTORICAL printed below the text apparently relating an anecdote about Lady Davies who having made prophecies of bad luck for the Duke of Buckingham and other predictions of a mischevious nature was brought before the High Commission where the proceedings apparently involved her claims of the prophet Daniel infused into her body based on an anagram of her name Eleanor Davies and ultimately being "shot with arrows from her own quiver" by the Bishop suggesting Dame Eleanor Davies - never so mad a lady.
