One of the earliest if not the first of Washington State imprints: Washington achieved statehood on November 11 1889. Other presses throughout the state may have issued printed material in the week preceding this publication; that the State of Washington printed bound material is unlikely. Another edition contains the Farewell Address of Miles C. Moore Last Governor of the Territory. November 18-22 1889.<p>In 1872 Ferry was first appointed Governor of Washington Territory by President Grant. Ferry served until 1880. After a break from politics in 1889 he was elected first Governor of the Washington State. Among his initial tasks was reviving the cities of Seattle Ellensburg and Spokane Falls all of which had suffered catastrophic fires. Scarce. Brightly colored fold-out state map at back is absolutely beautiful and in excellent condition. Text has several charming black and white illustrations as well as a toned illustrated frontispiece of the State Capitol. Bound in publisher's original blue cloth with cover and spine stamped in illustrated gilt. Text block is in fine condition except for loose frontispiece and title page. Otherwise binding is excellent and pages are clean and bright. Rubbing to cloth at corners and extremities. Ex-library with spare markings pouch on rear endpaper. 18730399131873. Original manuscript. Hardcover. 48pp of handwritten sentiments from friends and family; four engraved plates tissue guards title-page vignette. Bound in red morocco blind-stamped decorations chrome-litho floral pieces on both covers gilt cover lettering and spine decorations all edges gilt. 8.25" x 6.5". Pieces of spine covering chipped from both ends; internally in very good condition. Many of the entires in this album were written at Tiskilwa Mt. Carroll and Rochelle all in Illinois and a few others are from Boston Orange NJ and St. Louis. Most are in ink a few in fading but readable pencil. Several contain richly calligraphed phrases or titles within their text while one woman offers three animal sketches 2 dogs and a buck. Some of the non-calligraphic hands are nevertheless beautiful and flowing illustrating the importance of penmanship in the school curricula of the day. Many entries contain short poems and some of these appear to be original since they mention “Mary†or “my sister†etc. ~~ Mary's album documents the prevailing sentiments of the era with inspirational messages on the importance of living a Christian life trusting in God/Jesus etc. Only a few are of the “remember me†variety. Some writings take up a full page including those of her father William R. Webb and her mother both religious. There are also entries by her father-in-law B. Lichty who signs with “Bless you is the prayer of your unworthy father†and by her sister Ada. One signer Will P. Hallett of Mt. Carroll writes that he’s signing the book “although I have not as yet formed your acquaintance†and goes on to hope that if they don’t meet “in this sinful world may God help us to meet around his throne….†An entry from Mrs. C.B. Boyer notes that “One year ago you came to us as a stranger and today you leave for your new home.†and concludes with sending her good wishes. The only signer of historical note seems to be Joseph Morris Ray who signed as “your friend†in June 1873 and later became an Iowa attorney and State Senator 1893-95 after residing in Mt. Carroll for many years. hardcover

The 12th was mustered in 1863 and saw a lot of action in Tennessee Alabama Louisiana and Georgia. His third inked name is clearly "Reed". He sometimes appears in the roster as "Read". According to the roster he was mustered out Mar. 31 1864; however the Lt. Col. lead a raid on the town of Vienna p now New Hope Alabama on May 29 1864. Col Reed was from Monticello White County IN. Modern binding is superb clean and handsome; text block is clean and only ever-so-slightly age toned with bit of soiling to preliminary leaves; there is the occasional spot of foxing but the majority of the text block is as bright as the day it was published. A tight and unusually attractive first edition of this early study the first of eight volumes published under Worthen's direction with assistance from J.D. Whitney Leo Lesquereux and Henry Engelmann. All called for foldout maps and plans some partly colored are present and mainly in superb condition with only the two largest of them showing some edgewear and bearing expert archival strengthening. Worthen was a renowned if self-taught leading geographer of his day and served as State Geologist from 1858 to 1875. All in all an exceptional far above average copy. Cambridge authorizes James Macmanus Esq. to appear on his behalf. Witnessed by Andrew Curtin. Signed on the reverse by James Gilliland prothonotary and Samuel Milliken. James Macmanus was an attorney in Centre County Pa. Peter Cambridge had a general store in Bellefonte Centre Co. Andrew Curtin 1815-1894 was from Bellefonte Pa. and was a lawyer before serving as governor of Pennsylvania from 1861 to 1867; he later served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as U.S. Ambassador to Russia. James Gilliland 1804-1889 was prothonotary of Centre Co. from 1831 to 1836. During the Civil War Gov. Curtin appointed Gilliland commissary and quartermaster of the 1st Regiment of Pennsylvania Veterans; later he was transferred to Washington as assistant agent for Pennsylvania. In Near Fine Condition: folded; just starting to separate along one fold; back is slightly soiled; otherwise clean and solid. unknown
1849005105S.l.: s.n. 1849. Pamphlet. Very Good -. 61 p.; 22 cm. Disbound from a volume of unrelated 19th-century pamphlets. "23" in ink at upper right-hand corner of title page. In lower half of title page: "by Charles Ingersoll." No publication information. Charles Ingersoll 1805-1882 was the son of Charles Jared Ingersoll 1782-1862 both lawyers in Philadelphia. Charles Ingersoll was the author of several other publications on legal matters. Although opposed by the author of this publication whether Charles Ingersoll or another the joint resolution led to an amendment of the Pennsylvania constitution in 1850 introducing the elective judiciary to the state. In the upper right-hand corner of the title page is the partially cropped signature of Craig Biddle 1823-1910 who was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1850 and later a judge. Marginal notations in ink by Biddle and others in pencil possibly by another hand. Unfortunately both the fore-edges and the upper edges were cropped when this was bound with the other pamphlets. Very scarce. In Very Good- Condition: disbound; light foxing on a few pages; marginalia; otherwise clean. s.n. unknown

Hinges are sound. Vol 2 has legible name label on spine and vol 1 has remnants of label. Vol 1 - missing flyleaf. Inscribed "Thomas N. Bound in a well preserved green blind stamped publisher's cloth. The front cover contains an area of fading or discoloration. A mild water stain line is visible on front end papers; pages are generally clean but lightly age-toned. George Lunt 1803-1885 was the U.S. district attorney for Massachusetts during President Zachary Taylor's administration. In 1857 he became editor of the conservative "Boston Courier." DAB. Lunt's book collects four anti-liberal essays which were originally published in the "Courier." Among them are the following - a diatribe against reformer Theodore Parker a refutation of a lecture given by Ralph Waldo Emerson a refutation of a pro-suffrage lecture given by Georg W. Curtis and an article entitled the "Philosophy of Abolition." PROVENANCE: Inscribed by Rev. Luther Farnham to Rev. Thomas Smyth on front blank page. A three page letter written by Farnham dated "Boston Feb. 2 1858" is also attached to the verso of the front free end paper. The letter is addressed to "Rev'd dear Sir" presumably Smyth. Rev. Luther Farnham 1816-1897 authored a booklet survey entitled "A Glance at Private Libraries" 1855 "the first study of its kind to be done in the United States." See Basbanes "A Gentle Madness" p.155-56. Farnham was also Secretary of the Southern Aid Society a missionary organization which preached the Gospel to poor whites and blacks down south. The letter concerns Farnham's intent to write a series of articles on the history agriculture religion and education of the southern states in the hopes of promoting better feelings between north and south. Rev. Thomas Smyth was presumably the well known Presbyterian theologian who lived in Charlestown South Carolina. He is mentioned in Farnham's library survey as possessing about 17000 books. for G.
