The author William Darlington 1782-1863 was the president of the Chester County Bank or National Bank of Chester County represented Pennsylvania in Congress founded and was president of the Chester County Medical Society and was a well-known botanist. Early American Imprints 2nd series Shaw & Shoemaker 22727. Howes D-516. The author William J. Duane 1780-1865 was a Philadelphia lawyer who married Benjamin Franklin's granddaughter Deborah Franklin Bache. He served several terms in the Pennsylvania Assembly and briefly as Secretary of the United States Treasury during President Andrew Jackson's battle against the Bank of the United States. While serving in the state legislature in 1809-10 Duane had chaired the standing committee on roads and internal navigation which inspired him to compose letters urging legislative support for the development of road and canal companies which were published in the Philadelphia newspaper the Aurora run by his father William Duane under the pseudonym "Franklin." Those 16 letters are here revised and reprinted with an appendix containing letters illustrating the establishment of transportation companies in New York state. In Very Good- Condition: disbound; foxing light except for the title page; light corner creasing; title page and several following pages are partially detached; otherwise pages are solid. The final six leaves contain the speech of the Minister of Internal Affairs pp. i-x and leaf referencing supporting documents. Report on the development and maintenance of New York State Public Works primarily canals dams portage projects and flood planning. There is much about improvements to the Champlain Oswego and Erie canals etc. Included are 8 full-page photos of the Shinnecock and Peconic Canal. There is another section containing 70 full-page photos e. g. views of Mount Morris Canyon; Main Street Rochester as it appeared in 1865; Erie Canal Aqueduct as it appeared in the 1865 flood five other Rochester scenes during the 1865 flood; photos of flood scenes in 1893 1894 and 1896; views of the Village of Fillmore and Genesee River; several shots of the Upper Middle and Lower Falls at Portage; five photos of Furens Dam; 11 shots of Vyrnwy Dam and vicinity; 6 photos of the Dam at Lake Thurmere; etc. This is a heavy book that will be sent by MEDIA MAIL.
