He was President Emeritus of the Board of Directors of Butler University whose Hilton U. Brown Theatre bears his name. Hays to his son Billie Will Jr. with full page SIGNED INSCRIPTION front endpage dated 2/7/26 - "Dear Billie There is not much in this book you need to read now. Later on maybe. Its like life itself- there is much very wholesome and some to be taken in moderation and only at certain times. However I want you to read pages 187 to 206 especially about Aunt Sallie on page 189. Show it to her too and if she would like one of the books I'll get you one to give her. She is a great individual. Affectionately W.H.H.". Pages 187- 206 contain the chapter written by Will H. Hays and is titled "I Learned a Lot from the Folks Back Home". He was wrong about the citation it begins on page 199. Will Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies Hays installed a more formal production code called the Hays Code later simply "The Code" which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. 1915004496Indianapolis IN: Bobbs-Merrill 1915. "Indiana is proud of its "National Poet." The first official public celebration occurred in 1915 when Governor Samuel Moffett Ralston decreed October 7th as Riley Day. The state celebration swept across the country as the National Commissioner of Education issued instructions for a nationwide observance in all public schools. A birthday dinner in honor of the Poet was held in Indianapolis and attended by four hundred people. Many admirers were turned away and telegrams from countless well-wishers were cabled including one from President Woodrow Wilson. To mark the event a special birthday edition of Riley's Poems Here at Home was published and distributed to attendees."Lilly Library This copy one of those printed for the 400 dinner attendees.
