1939007194Los Angeles: Clifton's Pacific Seas Cafeteria 1939. No date circa 1940. Clifton's Cafeteria opened in the early 1930's during the height of the Great Depression and instituted a "Pay As You Wish" policy seen in fine print on the card never turning away a customer and giving away many free meals. In 1939 it underwent a complete renovation and was transformed into a 3-story restaurant with South Pacific "Tiki" theme called Clifton's Pacific Seas. After Jack Kerouac ate there he made mention of it in "On the Road". The restaurant closed and was demolished in 1960. The card is Very Good small corner creases. Verso of card is blank. . 1913008484Shelbyville Indiana: No Publisher 1913. RARE collection of 13 real photo postcards depicting the historic March 25 1913 flood of the Big and Little Blue Rivers in Shelbyville Indiana still Indiana's worst flood on record. Caused by thick winter snows followed by 2 months of heavy rains that culminated in the deluge of March 25 compared by some locals to a waterspout. The flood washed out bridges and culverts including the iron bridge over the Flat Rock River and caused a train wreck at nearby St. Paul pictured in two of the postcards. While over 20% of the population was made homeless no lives were lost. It took a week before the first train could arrive and a month before the inter-urban could return. Even the Mayor of Chicago offered to send help. "Shelbyville Indiana Flood of 1913" Ron Hamilton Shelby County Indiana Historian. The post cards are Near Fine 7 cards with the manuscript names of two local prior owners and some brief inked descriptions to versos. Tradition holds that printers print anonymously so the names of presses and printers are not included in the invitation copy. Over the years Gallo has printed no fewer than 50 a dozen or so are included here. In his notes for his own Hermetic Press archive Gallo notes: "The invitations tend toward the decorative this most particularly with the early ones when there was a camaraderie of competitiveness among the printers: Gerald Lange Michael Tarachow Norm Fritzberg Allan Kornblum and Gaylord Schanilec. Consequently these invitations display a wide range of handset foundry typefaces designed not only to be sparkling works but to spark typographic conversations." While this collection is a long way from being complete and many as yet undetermined as to printer or press this offering of 125 is by far the largest group of such invitations ever to come on the market. <br/><br/> Ampersand Club unknown books
