The second volume only. Lacking volume I. First edition of this volume. Illustrated throughout. Lacking 'Remains of Latton Priory' and 'Latton Church' plates at page 21. Otherwise work is complete according to binder's instructions. Has a 'Chelmsford' plate as frontispiece not stated to binding instructions as well as a folding map of Essex. This work describes itself as a brief historical and topographical delineation of every town and village with descriptions of the residences of the nobility and gentry. It boasts that it is a complete guide to Essex for the traveller and tourist. Author not attributed to title page. Author is known as Thomas Kitson Cromwell. Cromwell was an English dissenting minister and antiquary. He also wrote works on the towns of Colchester and Clerkenwell. In a full calf binding. Rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally generally smart. Patches of slight rubbing to the extremities and spine. Loss to the calf of rear board at tail of joint due to rubbing. Rubbing to the spine is heaviest to the head and tail. Marks to boards. Evidence of bookplate removal to the front pastedown. Front endpaper has been removed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages otherwise the occasional scattered spots. The third edition of Oliver Cromwell's Letters and Speeches elucidated by Scottish essayist historian and philosopher Thomas Carlyle. Following an introduction to Cromwell Carlyle offers a gloss on the statesman's letters composed between 1636 to1658. Prize bookplate to the front paste down of volume I. Mr Arthur Wansborough Jones was awarded the Daniel Reardon Prize in 1889. With a gilt crest of the Law Society of the United Kingdom to the front boards Binder's sticker to the rear paste rear pastedown of volume I and to the front pastedown of volumes II and III. Bound by 'J. Low' of Chancery Lane. In a full blue calf binding with a gilt crest of the Law Society of the United Kingdom to the front boards. Mary Anne Everett Green writes to the Society of Antiquaries about the discovery of a new document in the hand of Oliver Cromwell's wife Elizabeth Cromwell as 'I understand that the society of Antiquaries pleases itself somewhat upon being possessor of what has been supposed to be the only known autograph of Elizabeth Cromwell the protectress.' Writing on three sides of a bifolium in May 1859 from the 'State Paper Office' where she was then working Green describes the discovery among 'an immense mass of petitions' and appends a copy of the document not present with her inferences about the handwriting as well as a second copy of a document by Henry Cromwell and further explanation of her discovery. Green signs off with a hint of gloating: 'I think these papers will possess some interest for the Society' and signs her name in full. The letter was heavily revised during writing; there is a stain to the first page and a note above the address in another hand: 'read 9. June '59'. Green helped oversee the establishment of the Public Record Office as well as writing extensively on British history. Good 1859 Unpublished Manuscript Letters unknown
