Per Wikipedia Joseph Adam Lortz 1887 - 1975 In Luxembourg Was A Roman Catholic Church Historian. He Was A Highly Regarded Reformation Historian And Ecumenist. Beginning In The 1940'S Lortz Made His Ecumenical Views Available To General Readers As Well As To Scholars In Order To Promote Reconciliation Between Catholics And Protestants. His Writings Played A Role In The Thinking That Manifested Itself In The Second Vatican Council's Decree On Ecumenism Unitatis Redintegratio 21 November 1964. What Was Not Widely Known However Was Lortz's Involvement With Nazism From 1933 Until 1937. His Geschichte Der Kirche 1932 History Of The Church Portrayed The Church Of The 1800S And The 1900S As The Bastion Of Divine Truth And Moral Values Amid The Decay Of Western Society. After The War He Taught At The University Of Mainz From 1950 Until His Death In 1975. He Was Also Director Of The Institute Of European History In Mainz In The Department Of Western Religious History. His Successor At That Department Peter Manns De Was The Editor Of A Centennial Volume Of Lortz's Writings Published In 1987 And In His Preface He Touches On Lortz's History With The Nazis. Manns Says That Lortz Attempted To Find A "Legitimate" Way For Catholics To Connect To Nazism An Attempt He Calls An Error With Grave Consequences For Which Lortz Should Be Held Culpable And Manns Includes No Writings From That Period In The Volume. However He Argues That Lortz Was Not A Nazi Himself And That Such Is Proven By His Friendship With Avowed Opponents Of The Nazis Including Clemens August Graf Von Galen And Max Josef Metzger. <br/> <br/> Herder & Co hardcover

Brown paper over boards lower corners bumped but otherwise very minimal wear. Binding sound. Front free endpaper has a very neat inscription in black ink titled "Kriegsweihnachten-1943" followed by a unit designation ".Sturmkompanie-Paris" and lower down on the page the signature block and signature of the company commander. Kriegsweihnachten war Christmas was an important celebration in the German and other armies and was formally celebrated with a dinner and exchange of gifts. This book may have been such a gift. The author Karl Boemer was Leiter der Presseabteilung des Aussenpolitischen Amtes of the Nazi party. The book is an analysis of foreign press reports about the Nazi party its policy and its leaders. It contains numerous political cartoons from the foreign press. It is meant to serve as a manual for generating and countering propaganda. Entirely in German. Vol. 1 title page has circular stamp of the Vienna Staatsarchiv Kriegsarchiv at head and "Nachlass Mjr. Franz Schorn" written at the foot. Vol. 2 title page is stamped at the head "Österreichischer Aero-Club" with "Nachlass Hermann Hold Wien" written above several other pages also have the stamp of the Österreichischer Aero-Club; also on the title page is a small oval stamp of a bookseller in Vienna. In Very Good Condition: corners are bumped and rubbed; vols 1 and 2 corners are slightly frayed and back joints are starting to separate from tail; covers are slightly soiled and rubbed; one plate in vol. 2 is detached but present lower edge creased with 1-cm. tear not touching image; otherwise pages and plates are clean and tight.
