Text in simplified Chinese characters. These photographs were taken between 1921 and 1990 and depict a careful selection of significant news events of the time; conferences meetings between Chinese statesmen and world leaders military and political campaigns and markers of technological and economic progress. Included are a mix of popular and less well-known images from the Communist Party's history concluding with the 7th Plenary Session of the Party's 13th Central Committee in December 1990 at which the 8th Five-Year Plan was adopted. <br> <br>A common theme throughout the set is the recurring presence of Deng Xiaoping through the years ostensibly to highlight his dedication to the Party. His presence starts with his activities as a guerrilla in the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1938 his leading role at the Party's 8th Congress in 1956 and the Seven Thousand Cadres Conference in 1962 his launching of the Reform and Opening Up policy in 1978 and meeting with Margaret Thatcher in 1984 to discuss the handover of Hong Kong. . Most likely distributed to military personnel in the field the map extends from the Gulf of Siam and the South China Sea in the south to Communist China in the north. The U.S. Seventh Fleet appears just off the Eastern shore of Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh Trail extends from North Vietnam through Laos and into South Vietnam with spurs directed at Danang where the first American combat troops landed in 1965 the Do Xa Zone Kontum Pleiku and Cambodia. Railroads extend from the top of the map to the bottom . reaching into Thailand Cambodia and Communist China. Communist Shipping Lanes from China lead to North Vietnam. The legend identifies symbols for shared U.S.-South Vietnam bases; Major Red Zones; Main Roads; Railroads and Capitals. The text at the bottom of the map reads "Just as an infected ingrown toenail is a source of intense pain to the whole body so does the war in Viet Nam affect the whole world. Yet knowledge about this agonizing trouble spot of Viet Nam whose very name frequently invokes the strongest feelings . both pro and con . in this land of ours is more than likely to be sketchy and confusing to the civilian here at home. It published briefs on military actions diplomatic events comings and goings and "Special Releases" that served as longer form articles or editorials. Together with: This Week in China later This Week in Free China Vol 1 No. 1 - Vol. 56 No. 52 Sept 17 1943 to December 26 1956. Lacking issues for Apr. 8 1949; Sept. 24 1943; Sept 31 1945; and Dec. 21 1946. Also lacking all issues between May 1949 and Sept. 5 1950 consequentially missing the period of the KMT retreat to Taiwan. Folio 8 vols. This weekly edition produced longer form articles in comparison to the daily. It changed its name to This Week in Free China after the Communists expelled the KMT. Post WWII it continued to serve as a propaganda outlet for the KMT on Taiwan and focused on preparations to retake China as well as the Korean war Japanese reconstruction and the administration of Taiwan.
