1940157046N.p.: N.p. 1940. Archive of 26 vintage photographs of mid-Atlantic roadside alert signs with advertisements circa 1930s-1940s. Includes 21 double weight photographs and two matte-finish. Three photographs bear annotations in manuscript pencil on the verso.<br /> <br /> The collection contains thirteen photographs of alert signs advertising Champion spark plugs seven advertising hotels the Biltmore in Dayton Hotel Sinton in Cincinnati Hotel Adelphia in Philadelphia Hotel Schenley in Pittsburgh Hotel Webster Hall in Detroit and two for Hotel Elizabeth Carteret in Elizabeth New Jersey three advertising radio stations WJW and WADC of Akron and WSPD of Toledo and three for various automobile and travel-related businesses.<br /> <br /> Ostensibly designed to warn drivers of forthcoming crossroads turns or junctions the roadside alert signs presented here were perhaps more effective for the prime advertising real estate of their plinths. The circular "alert" section containing text or symbols of approaching traffic changes and usually containing a center piece of reflective glass was mounted to a large freestanding base used for advertising automobile products radio stations local businesses and travel locations.<br /> <br /> 8 x 10 inches. Printed in various sizes and colours light blue white yellow pink with varied measurements: 8 at 8.5" x 11" // 2 at 10" x 8" // 2 at 14" x 8.5". Theatres represented amongst the selection include: 1. Complete! No pieces pieces missing in fine condition -- assembled an image of a windmill alongside a brook with 3 sailboats ashore. Envelope a little dust-soiled and lightly chipped along the edges but nonetheless nicely preserved featuring ads for Cocomalt which is delicious hot or cold and provides extra nourishment to growing boys and girls. Also with instructions for what to do with a jigsaw puzzle and a time chart to help you establish whether or not you're a total dummy who took too long to figure it out. A volume produced by Wilding Picture Productions also known as Wilding Studios advertising their audiovisual communications services for industrial use. Contemporary ownership annotation in manuscript ink on the second leaf. <br /> <br /> Wilding was founded in Detroit in 1914 moving into the Essanay Building in Chicago in 1937. The company would become one of the largest producers of industrial films over the ensuing decades and at one point operated out of Cleveland Hollywood Chicago Detroit and New York. Wilding is today best remembered for producing many of the US Armed Services' training and educational films during World War II.<br /> <br /> Of particular note in the volume on offer are over 15 pages of copied client testimonials and four pages of photographs of Wilding Studios during the making of various commercial films.<br /> <br /> Very Good plus in string-bound embossed leatherette wrappers. Wrappers moderately yapped. Contents Very Good with dampstaining affecting the first five leaves though leaves are not stuck together light toning throughout and several photographs and testimonials laid inhaving become detached from the leaves over time.
