18711247Wells VT 1871-1873. Leather bound. Leather account book with pocket. Good. 72 pages written 62 blank. 15.5 x 10 cm. Leather notebook with flap and pocket property of R.M.W Lewis Wells VT. Handwritten notebook with 16 additional daily accounts using "Lake Austin Woolen Mill" letterhead for this cheese factories daily tally. Ledger describes what seems to be a cheese co-op with dividends divided per day report of the season most milk received in one day June 16th - 9195 gallons days cheese was made per year 207 etc. Wells VT rests on the edge of Rutland county and in 1870 the populations total was 430 people. In the early 1800's a dam was built on Lake St. Catherine which enabled industry such as a woolen mill wood working shop and cheese factory to thrive. Covers worn joints cracked but holding 2 cm. loss of leather to tail of spine. <br/><br/> hardcover books

Register of costs for the ship Flora commanded by Captain Daniel Fitch sailing out of New London Connecticut while docked at a whale-fishery in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Disbursements are recorded by ship agents to inform the ship owners of all the charges the voyage accrues while in port. Expenses include portage pilotage boarding officer's fee and goods purchased for crew - sugar coffee bread black beans and vegetables. Maxwell Wright & Co. was the owner/shipping company that oversaw the operation in Rio while N. & W. W. Billings is listed as the Managing owner or agent in Connecticut according to the Report of Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries. Text inked and elegantly penned. The city of Moorhead located next to the Red River served as a transfer point for goods and passengers between the Twin Cities and Winnipeg. Originally a destination for the riverboat crowd The Northern Pacific Railroad brought travelers to the area who were partial to first-rate dining. Menu highlights: Spring Lamb with Mint Sauce Baron Pork with Piquant Sauce Champagne Punch French Sardines Sweet Breads larded with French Peas Cocoanut Cream Pie Charlotte Russe en Cases. 18912287Providence RI 1891. Cards. Cream illustrated cards paper illustrated menu. Very good. 16.5 x 11. 5 cm. Lunch & Dinner menu. Lunch featured Lobster Salad & Stewed Calf's Liver with Wine Sauce. Dinner featured Chowder Baked Mackerel with Tomato Sauce Fried Eels - Jewish style Saratoga Chips Clam Fritters Soft Shell Crabs Quahogs Indian Pudding Ice Cream Watermelon & Peaches and Ponham Spring Water. Also noted the 1891 Executive Committee and the Providence Warren & Bristol Train schedules. <br /> <br />A private club with a membership of 200 shareholders opened in 1867 as a place for gentlemen to network over shore dinners of lobster steamed clams corn and potatoes. The club grounds included a ball field miniature clock and obstacle golf courses bowling alleys and it's own wharf. This area in Providence known as "Riverside" hosted the Crescent Park Amusement Park known as the "Coney Island of the East". Along the Providence River west of the club is the Ponham Lighthouse which is still standing today. The club closed in 1954 and the property was redeveloped for condominiums in the 1980's. Diagonal vista: The ships Anahuac Lucy S. Wills and Anna Decatur load ice at the Tudor Wharves Charlestown Massachusetts. The first two ships were East Boston-built and Boston-registered; the latter was built and registered in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Charlestown Bridge is in the foreground with one lone spectator observing the shipyard docks. Frederick Tudor known as "The Ice King" combined two trades without much apparent connection ice and sawdust and by using the sawdust for insulation was able to create a shipping industry in New England that reached the far East and South America. Covers chipped with tears short archival tape repairs. A sewn cloth spine has been affixed to the booklet; it has become frayed at the bottom and the stitching has been cut; the cloth spine could readily be removed if desired. Verso of rear cover advertises other McLoughlin children's books. A volume in Aunt Mary's Little Series. Contents short illustrated verses in good condition. Cover depicts title character with grotesque nose. Evidently a much admired booklet warranting preservation with needle and thread. In present state fair condition only. . Commercial portraits and images of European theatre performers with the plate number and date in the plate. Some show good humor -- a classroom of children being taught by a dog men drinking a woman peering through a tennis racket and the like. Portfolio soiled and worn. 1870List1032Jefferson City: S. Winans Photographer 1870. Carte-de-visite photographs measuring 3 ¾ x 2 ¼ on slightly larger mounts versos with the decorative stamp of S. Winans photographer 126 High St. Jefferson City. Some fading to images else about fine quite well preserved near fine overall. Near Fine. The Lincoln Institute of Jefferson City Missouri had its roots in the educational programs set up for soldiers of the 62nd Colored Regiment during the Civil War most of whom were from Missouri. After the war with $6000 raised from donations a group led by the white abolitionist officer Richard Foster set up the Lincoln Institute in Jefferson City. The student body was entirely African-american with the faculty a mix of African-American and white. The state of Missouri provided additional funding. <br /> <br /> Collected here are four portraits of students of the institute likely taken in the founding decade before the carte-de-visite format was replaced by the cabinet card. The photographer S. Winans took the photographs likely in his Jefferson City gallery as they are all staged in a formal portrait gallery. Winans also took a well known portrait of David W. Wallace the father of Bess Wallace Truman. Quite uncommon - we find no other record of these images elsewhere. S. Winans, Photographer unknown books

Read was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1822 and 1823 and served as City Solicitor of Philadelphia from 1830 to 1833. He was appointed District Attorney of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1837 and held the office until 1845. Read became Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1858 and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1872. Read gained an international reputation for the depth of his knowledge eloquence and masterly arguments in the courtroom. Active in politics Read was an early supporter and organizer of the Republican Party. This portrait belonged to the Philadelphia Bar Association. Founded in 1802 it is the oldest association of lawyers in the United States. Its library where this portrait was last displayed was renamed the Theodore F.
