Engraved frontispiece depicting St. Elizabeth by Friedrich Ludy after Friedrich Overbeck; each page with a decorative figural border. Minor foxing to preliminary leaves very slightly foxed elsewhere otherwise a fine copy the text quite clean bright and fresh and the binding unworn and exceptionally lustrous.<br/> <br/> Decoratively printed and attractively bound this volume on Christian marriage and family life is a delightful example of late 19th century French book production. Its author Félix-Antoine-Philibert Dupanloup 1802-78 was the bishop of Orléans and a proponent of liberal Catholicism in France throughout the 19th century. Alongside teaching and pastoral duties he authored several works on religious matters throughout his career. Initially published in 1869 the present work on "Christian Marriage" went on to become a very popular work remaining in print into the second decade of the 20th century. One wonders if its popularity was as much due to the beauty of the work as its contents: each page is graced with detailed engraved borders laden with scrolling foliage and rich Christian imagery executed with delicacy and panache. This copy is pleasing in its highly polished morocco exterior its lacy inner dentelles and its attractive patterned endleaves. Jules Gervais unknown

Head of spine with minute fraying slight soiling to back cover isolated minor foxing chosen paper stock not as bright as it could be but still a really excellent copy the text clean and fresh and the binding with few signs of use.<br/> <br/> Originally published as a series of articles in the "Astoria Marine Gazette" between 1865-66 the contents of this volume include chapters on religious proselytizing encounters often of a violent nature with indigenous peoples mountain men the formation of an early government and commercial interests in the area. Originally a carpenter from Utica William Henry Gray 1810-89 joined the party of fellow missionaries Marcus Whitman 1802-1847 and Henry Spalding 1803-1874 and their respective wives Narcissa 1808-1847 and Eliza 1807-1851 on a seven-month 3000-mile journey overland from their homes in upstate New York to Fort Vancouver. Narcissa and Eliza were the first white women to cross the Rocky Mountains. Gray gives a long absorbing account of that trip in the text here. He was later involved with efforts to create a provisional government among settlers of the area. As an historian Gray was widely censured even as he was acknowledged as an important source: Howes says the present work is "undependable and biased but as the product of a pioneer of 1838 it cannot be ignored." This book is easy enough to find but it is normally encountered in rough shape. Harris & Holman unknown

He descended from Çapanoghuls Çapanogullari principality in Anatolia which was Yozgat city's deep-rooted dynasty. He wrote the impressions in verse he described in detail on the places he visited in the cities of Yozgat Kirsehir Kastamonu city Küre Mountains and Inebolu etc. with their architectural monuments and important figures who lived in those places. This document certifies that a family of three comprising parents and a young boy residing in Ōmi Domain present-day Shiga Prefecture are not Christians and are affiliated with a Jōdo sect Buddhist temple the temple name is unclear. The document is dated March 1863 and bears the signature of the head priest of the temple. <br> <br>Such certificates commonly known as terauke were issued between 1671 and 1873 as part of the Tokugawa authorities' system for suppressing Christianity. They also functioned as a means of population registration linking individuals and households to Buddhist institutions for administrative and taxation purposes. . unknown

Two uniform volumes of this wide ranging illustrated magazine from the late nineteenth century. A really good source for less well known perspectives on American History of the period. Rather uncommon. Volume XXVIII New Series Vol. VI May 1884 to October 1884. Volume LVII New Series Vol. XXXV.; November 1898 to April 1899. The Century Magazine was first published in the US in 1881 succeeding Scribner's Monthly Magazine. Its content written by numerous contributors included illustrated history articles matters of recent interest and literature. Its American Civil War series included contributions by generals and over 200 Northern and Southern participants of all ranks. It ceased publication in 1930. Each volume is in its original cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spines. Externally both volumes are sound though with some very light rubbing. Some light straining to the rear hinge of the second volume and both hinges to the first volume are tender. Internally both volumes are firmly bound and bright though with the odd spot and handling mark. Bookseller's ink stamp to the front free endpaper of the first volume. Very Good The Century Co; F. He established empirical rules for the analysis of spectral lines which remain associated with his name. In 1897 he discovered the Anomalous Zeeman Effect a phenomenon noted when the spectral lines of elements were studied in the presence or absence of a magnetic field. Preston reported in an important paper published in The Scientific Transactions of The Royal Dublin Society read on 22 December 1897 and published the following April that he reported results more complicated than Zeeman had reported. Following this up further he reported in a second paper in the RDS Scientific Transactions read on 18 January 1899 and published the following June that he had found results that were 'very startling' and appeared 'quite contrary to all theoretical explanations'. The full explanation had to wait for the theory of relativity and the introduction of quantum mechanics which were to shake the rigid framework of Newtonian conceptions of absolute time and space. Preston's results were an important step in this development.</p> <br /> <p>Preston was at the forefront of the Maxwellian research programme led by George Johnstone Stoney and George Francis FitzGerald. Preston famously tackled Stoney in what became a public dispute over a mathematical conclusion in this research programme which concerned electromagnetic and spectroscopic sciences. Stoney who is accredited with naming the electron was in opposition to Preston on this particular matter. John William Strutt 3rd Baron Rayleigh president of the Royal Dublin Society intervened in this argument in Prestons defence.</p> <br /> <p>He was educated at The Royal School Armagh the Royal University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin. From 1891 to 1900 he was Professor of Natural Philosophy at University College Dublin. He was a Fellow of the Royal University of Ireland and of the Royal Society London and was a distinguished spectroscopist. His two major textbooks remained in continuous use for over 50 years. He enrolled in Trinity College Dublin in 1881 working under the physicist George FitzGerald known for his work in electromagnetics and graduated with a BA in mathematics in 1885. The previous year he had sat the Royal University of Ireland degree examinations which also earned him a BA from there with a first in mathematical science. He enrolled in Trinity College Dublin in 1881 and worked under the physicist George FitzGerald known for his work in electromagnetics. While at University College Dublin he wrote a book The Theory of Light. In 1899 he won the second Boyle Medal presented by the Royal Dublin Society. Staniford John Thornberry Winnie Woodfern and Joseph Wolf. <br /> <br /> The accompanying text added below for context. <br /> <br /> Mr. Stebbings June and Mr. Nutter of Boston who undertook the voyage to Ceylon for the purpose of procuring elephants for Mr. Barnum's Traveling Menagerie have furnished us with some curious descriptions of their adventures in the interior of the island. On their arrival at Point de Galle early in October last they were disappointed in their expectations of procuring tame elephants either from the government authorities or from the temples which own large numbers of them. They then proceeded to Columbo the maritime capital of Ceylon on the western coast and afterwards to the city of Kany in the interior but without succeeding in their object. Very heavy rains had fallen just before their arrival and the elephants were required to assist in mending the roads. In this dilemma the elephant seekers determined to go into the jungles among the wild herds and endeavor to capture a ship load of the animals. This was considered a dangerous undertaking as the rainy season had just set in and the country necessary to be traversed was a dense tropical wilderness with no other roads than the foot-paths from one native village to another. Ceylon is divided nearly into two equal parts by a range of mountains running north and south which divide the periodical rains so that the rainy season changes from one side of the island to the other and the elephants follow it. Mr. June captured the greatest number of his elephants in the northern part of the island near the town of Anarajahpoora. The first process toward capturing the elephants is accurately represented in the engraving below. The natives having ascertained the spots most frequented by the herds construct in the neighborhood a kraal or pen. This is shaped like three sides of a square having an aperture on the fourth side for the entrance of the elephants from each side of which extends a long palisade slanting outwards like the mouth of a funnel. The kraal is made of heavy upright posts planted at a short distance from each other and lashed together by withes. To make them more secure they are stayed by slanting posts set against them on the outside. When the kraal is finished the natives surround a heard and by shouts and the firing of muskets alarm the animals who are urged forward toward the entrance and at last are all secured within the enclosure. In capturing these animals the natives evince much skill and tact. Our artist had thrown much life and spirit into this scene. Another way of taking elephants is sometimes practised. The animals during the heat of the day will sometimes rest himself against a tree and take an hour's doze with great satisfaction. Some of the natives are daring enough at this time to creep through the jungle till they reach his very feet. Provided with a rope the other end of which is made fast to a tree the hind leg of the animal is touched gently and being very sensitive he lifts his foot to shake off the supposed fly and a noose is instantly slipped under.
