1902220266Japan. No date. Circa1902. Two very attractive colour folded manuscript maps one showing China and the other Korea. Map of China: Watercolour map 48 x 63.5cm. Closed tear now professionally repaired. Map of Korea: Finely detailed watercolour map a few tiny holes very neatly repaired on the verso with archival washi. 33 x 24.5cm Two delicate hand-painted maps one of China and one of Korea produced by a Japanese student cartographer named Koike Tokushige 小池徳重. The undated map of China appears to have been produced in the first five years of the twentieth century: a time when Japan had recently colonized Taiwan and when Japanese economic and political interest in the region was rapidly expanding. The inscription on the map suggests that it was a third year college project. But the high level of detail suggests that the artist had considerable experience of map making. The map of China shows the main provinces rivers major transport routes the Great Wall and the location of key cities although the names of the cities are not included. It also shows outlines of the Korean Peninsula Taiwan and the Japanese island of Kyushu but not the rest of Japan. The map of Korea is more detailed. It provides an accurate outline of the Korean Peninsula with careful hatching indicating changes in elevation. Rivers and major road routes are shown on the map and the locations of major towns are marked though only Busan and Incheon are named. Dotted lines show coastal sea routes and routes between Kyushu and Busan and between Incheon and China. The map shows the Gyeongin railway line between Seoul and Incheon which was completed in 1899 and route of the Gyeongbu railway line between Busan and Seoul whose construction started from both ends in 1901. But the map depicts only small sections of this line close to Seoul and Busan as being completed with the rest more lightly outlined to show the projected route implying that the map was drawn around 1901-1902 and certainly before the Gyongbu line was opened in 1904. Inserted text gives the land area and population of Korea. Rather strangely though the figure given for the Korean population is vastly underestimated. Ikeda gives this as 5.7 million when in fact at that time is was around 18 million. . unknown

First edition of this very scarce original eyewitness account of the Yildirim Army Group or Thunderbolt Army Group of the Ottoman Empire and Germany in the Sinai - Palestine Campaign during the First World War. In his book Turkish mayor Vecihi describes the formation of the Palestine Front the geography of the region Arab tribes and local soldiers battles with the British Army at the front retreat and collapse logistics characteristics of the soldiers relations of Turkish and German officers and betrayal of the Kavm-i Necîb Arabs i.e. Arabic noble people and intentions of the Germans. Where Mayor Vecihi was an officer during the Campaign between 1915 and 1918 the Yildirim Army Group or Thunderbolt Army Group of the Ottoman Empire Turkish: Yildirim Ordular Grubu or Army Group F German: Heeresgruppe F was an important part of the Ottoman Army during World War I. While being an Ottoman unit it also contained the German Asia Corps. Starting in June 1917 the Yildirim Army Group's first commander-in-chief was the former Prussian Minister of War and Chief of Staff Erich von Falkenhayn 1861-1922. Von Falkenhayn was replaced by General of the Cavalry Otto Liman von Sanders on 25 February 1918. After the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918 Mustafa Kemal took command until the Group's dissolution a few days later. Özege 5789. 'Abd al-Daâ'im al-Ansârî in praise of Tripoli in Africa. Edited with an introduction and index by al-Tâhir Ahmad al-Zâwî. Signed and inscribed by Ahmad al-Zâwî 1890-1986. Al-Tadhkâr is regarded as the earliest and most important foundational source for the history of Libya to this day. Talisî. The reason for composing al-Tadhkâr was to provide a commentary on a poem by Amad ibn 'Abd al-Dâ'im al-Ansârî written in response to the Moroccan traveller Abû 'Abd Allâh Muammad ibn Muammad al-'Abdar'i who had satirized Tripoli following a dispute between him and its judge Abû Muammad 'Abd Allâh ibn 'Abd al-Sayyid. The author begins his book by explaining the poem then proceeds to discuss Libya and describe Tripoli addressing the entry of the Berbers into Cyrenaica and the Maghrib the conquest of Cyrenaica by 'Amr ibn al-'As followed by Tripoli and the advance toward the Nafusa Mountains in the west. The narrative continues up to the era of Amad Pasha al-Qaramanli. The book thus constitutes a detailed historical commentary on Tripoli and its conditions from the time of the first Islamic conquest to the reign of Amad Pasha al-Qaramanli. First edition of this extremely rare Turkish book including Qirimi's first-hand account of the Prut War and Treaty 1711 and the defense of the city he participated in during the Russian invasion of Crimea 1735-36. The book was translated into Ottoman Turkish and edited by Turkish turcologist and soldier Necib Asim Yaziksiz 1861-1935 with annotations from the original work titled "Umdet al-Akhbar" i.e. The principle of the news. Abdulgaffar Qirimi was a Crimean scholar who lived in the Crimean Khanate in the first half of the 18th century and served in various government positions. Qirimi dedicated his work to Genghis Khan the Golden Horde and the Crimean Khanate. He reported many original details and especially for the 18th century his information is authentic and based on personal descriptions. The main part of the work is devoted to the Golden Horde starting from Genghis Khan and his descendants Crimean Khanate Gerayids and murzas. When Abdulgaffar Qirimi wrote a history of the descendants of Jochi Khan he used in his book more than 20 historical works as sources. He stated the names of these works and indicated where he got this or that information. At the same time he had access to the archives of the Crimean Khanate and used his family legends as well as popular traditions. Plenty of space in his work occupies his own observations as a participant in military campaigns and court life. His work concerning khans Berke Tokhta Uzbek Tokhtamish and Ulugh Muhammad reflects the popular version and is based on the oral historiography of the Tatars. The Russo-Ottoman War of 1710-1711 also known as the Prut River Campaign was a brief military conflict between the Tsardom of Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The main battle took place during 18-22 July 1711 in the basin of the Pruth river near Stanileti Stanilesti after Tsar Peter I invaded Ottoman Moldavia following the Ottoman Empire's declaration of war on Russia. The ill-prepared 38000 Russians with 5000 Moldavians found themselves surrounded by 200000 Turks under Grand Vizier Baltaci Mehmet Pasha. After three days of fighting and heavy casualties the Tsar and his armies were allowed to withdraw after agreeing to abandon the fortress of Azov and its surrounding territory. The Ottoman victory led to the Treaty of the Prut which was confirmed by the Treaty of Adrianople. Özege 21999.; TBTK 479.; OCLC 281773486. Full blue-gray morocco gilt ruling & Art Deco lettering on front cover & spine rounded corners blue silk moire endpapers lower margins of title first two leaves renewed w/paper repairs poorly removed former ownerâ€™s bookplate on verso of silk moire front flyleaf carefully repaired still a VG- exemplar from the library of General Robert Elkington Wood 1879-1969 who served in the Philippine Insurrection Quartermaster for the Panama Canal Railroad Company during the construction with the 42nd Rainbow Division in the AEF in World War I and after retirement with the du Point de Nemours Co. in Venezuela and then as President of Sears Roebuck from 1928-1939 and chairmen until 1954. First edition of this spectacular presentation souvenir album for the Century of Progress which influenced modernist architects for decades and served as an invaluable exhibit of art deco design motifs. The limited number of presentation albums appear to have been created as gifts by the photographers for the Board of Trustees Officers and Founder Members for the Exposition. These remarkable images include a night shot of the Grand Fountain; aerial views of the grounds; the facade of the Hall of Science which typified the linear geometric Art Deco style of the Fair designed by architect Paul Philippe Cret and one of the interior shots showing the Great Hall announcing Planckâ€™s Quantum and Einsteinâ€™s Relativity theories; the General Electric buildings; the stunning Transportation Building with itâ€™s amazing Art Deco facade and a nighttime view of the Planetarium and Terrazzo Reflecting Pools. The photographers have also included an excellent photo of Italo Balboâ€™s squadron of 24 Savoia-Marchetti SM.55X flying boats above Lake Michigan next to the fairgrounds. His planes had left Italy on June 30 1933 and finally arrived over Chicago on July 15 1933 and even carrying airmail of which the commemorative envelopes are still very desired items by collectors. Also included are views of the Streets of Shanghai Swiftâ€™s Orchestra Shell Admiral Byrdâ€™s South Pole Ship the â€œCity of New Yorkâ€ The Chrysler Motors Building Swiss Village Electrical building with fireworks in a night scene and many others. Kaufmann & Fabry was an active commercial photographic firm specializing in architectural photography in Chicago from before 1910 and are still an active company. Founders were Charles D. Kaufmann b. 1888 an Austrian-American and Herman Fabry 1879-1955 German-American who are perhaps best remembered as the official photographers of the 1933 Century of Progress Worldâ€™s Fair and were awarded not only the rights for publishing and distributing photographs and photos in publications but also operated a camera shop and film processing lab on the Exhibition grounds through 1933 and 1934. Complete first volume Starting with Vol I Nr 1 of â€œDer Kibitserâ€ Dec. 15 1908 renamed and renumbered first as Vol I Nr 1 Jan 22 1909 of â€œDer Groyser Kibetser The big kibetzerâ€ with the following issue of Feb 5 numbered as "3" to correctly follow from the first issue and then with Vol I Nr 6 March 19 1909 onward as â€œDer Groyser Kundes The Big Stickâ€ or â€œThe Big Prankster.â€ Incidentally the other set of this volume we examined also did not have a Nr 2 so we are confident this is complete as issued. One centerfold cartoon by Zuni Maud see image features "Der Kaptialistisher Tayfel"--the Capitalist Devilâ€“holding back a "mother" by the hair to stop her from interfering as "baby's milk-bottle" is drained off by the "milk-trust" cat. The caption reads "The Capitalist Devil: - to the mother: Never mind madam all in English in Hebrew letters you go to the factory the milk-trust will take good care of your baby." This cartoon-laden periodical was a New York City Yiddish language satirical bi- weekly which ran from 1908 until 1927. The humor paper was issued biweekly this volume for its first 20 months and then weekly after that. OCLC also references another Vol I Nr 1 from April 15 1908 a special SÂ´imhes` Toyreh Simchas Torah issue but this may have been a one-off. Founded by the humorist Yosef Tunkel or Der Tunkeler his pen name meaning 'The Dark One' the paper was taken on by Jacob Marinoff when Tunkel left to work for an established paper in Warsaw. The paper consciously set itself up in opposition to the serious Yiddish-language press of the time such as the socialist Forverts.Naturally more traditional religious Judaism did not escape its satire: The later 1915 "Christmas" edition included a parodic conversation between Jesus and the prophet Elijah. Despite its irreverent attitude to everything it also published poetry by Di Yunge "The Young Ones" poets such as Moyshe-Leyb Halpern and Zuni Maud. At its height it had a circulation of 35000 but folded in 1927 due to flagging sales. First printed edition of this earliest travel account of China in the Islamic world and description of the early 16th century China and the Ming Dynasty by Nakkâs the leader of the delegation sent by Mirza Shahruh son of Tamerlane. This book is known also "Hitaynama" i.e. The book of China which was translated by Çelebizâde and published by Ali Emirî. Hitay or Hitai is the name given to northern China by the Uyghurs Mongols and some peoples in Medieval Europe. This area contains northern China Beijing and certain regions of Manchuria between the Great Wall of China and the Yellow River Huang He. Ming dynasty and Tamerlane relations were always tense. After Tamerlane's death at last his Chinese campaign his son Mirza Shahruh sent a delegation to the Chinese emperor which included Nakkâs. His book written in Persian was completed in 1422. In his book he described their three year-voyage which started from Herat to Pekin. There is valuable information in this travel book on many topics such as the size of the Chinese court of the Ming dynasty in Han-Balik-Pekin the multitude of the emperor's servants the emperor's wooden seating ceremonies banquets for the ambassadors the characteristics of the rooms they stayed in the emperor's religion and the way of worship etc. At the beginning of the 15th century the book was presented to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and Sultan Selim.
