178009496Orléans: P.-F. Perdoux 1780. Beneath the title band lies the walled city of Soissons fronted by a broad field. In the center left shoemakers and cobblers serve customers and make and repair shoes in the shelter of a temporary stall. An elaborate outsized carriage dominates the scene. On the left an angel leads the team of six white horses toward the town gate. In the carriage a well dressed coachmen drives the beasts which are caparisoned with the tools of the shoemaker's and cobbler's trades. With a Cross of the Holy Spirit pinned to each of their chests Saints Crispin and Crispinian richly garbed sit behind unruffled in their journey. The carriage door is emblazoned with shoemakers' and cobblers' tools. In the lower left of the scene more tools overflow a wooden box and just to the right a pair of high boots and a half-dozen lasts lie scattered on the ground. Famous throughout northern Europe in the Middle Ages Crispin and Crispinian are known today from the king's great speech before the Battle of Agincourt in Shakespeare's Henry the Fifth act IV scene 3. Probably produced for their feast day - 25 October - to be hung in merchants' stalls and shops and fixed to tavern walls this wonderfully exuberant monumental print celebrates THE PATRON SAINTS OF SHOEMAKERS AND COBBLERS and of Soissons where they made shoes at night having preached all day. These sheets were sold to the tradesmen across France who were protected by the saints and broadly to the inhabitants of Soissons. Orléans was the most important center for the production and distribution of popular imagery in 18th-century France and Perdoux a dominant force not only in cheap prints but in decorated papers many used for book wrappers. It is unlikely that another example of this four-sheet print survives and certainly not in such superb condition four neat blank marginal repairs on the verso one just into the image. Few lines of contents written in Italian script on front free endpaper and signed G. Viparelli on title. <br/><br/>The rise of obstetrics in the early modern period had a mixed effect on midwifery. Some midwives clung to their traditional ways. Others embraced the new science and sought retraining. National policies also shaped the contours of midwifery practice. Overall the art of midwifery could no longer be considered a subdivision of medicine but must be regarded as a branch of surgery requiring a thorough knowledge of surgical principles. The title of this work does not indicate its comprehensiveness; it is more than an operative midwifery for it includes much that belongs to a general treatise on the subject. Rastrellis work and portrait cannot be found elsewhere suggesting it is commonly an addition to texts and the title translated is a moral and civil work directed by a father to his son. Rastrelli was a noted poet in the latter half of the 18th century. While both parts are exceedingly rare the first is only located at the Wellcome Library and the Biblioteca della Fondazione Biblioteca San Bernandino in Italy. 17969581Britain: Unpublished 1796. Fine late 18th century English manuscript atlas beautifully drawn almost certainly by a child and offering 68 full-page maps 32 in outline and a further 36 with keyed explanatory apparatus. The manuscript's creator probably in or around London details a colonial-era map of North America California as peninsular entitled 'Ten Northern American Colonies' going no further south than Virginia as well as providing maps of the 'East Indies and China' and a further 'Epitome of the new World' - north and south America as well as maps of England and Europe. We have not identified which printed map of the American colonies 'M.L.S.' was working from. This manuscript atlas is a particularly good example of its kind. The only English county to have its own full map is Middlesex - hence the suggestion of a London origin to the manuscript. The presence of maps of legal circuits in England may suggest a lawyerly family background. Map drawing for children in the 18th century was part of a polite education - the kind undertaken by the Bertram children in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park - and in Britain functioned as a way of understanding imperial expansion and contraction if it were to be acknowledged in the years after 1776. These maps could demonstrate and develop as here the child's skilled draughtsmanship in the copying process which would have drawn upon printed examples available to the child or their tutor. And when completed the atlas could be retained to demonstrate the child's educational achievement - certainly the family involved in the production of this atlas approved of the outcome as they commissioned its attractive tree-calf binding after the manuscript was completed. DESCRIPTION: Attractively bound quarto size manuscript 19x24cm in tree calf spine relaid gilt sun emblems to the backstrip and 'Maps' on a black label. Marbled endpapers; paper with 'GR' watermark and horizontal chainlnes. Written on the the second flyleaf the initials 'MLS'. Manuscript title: 'A System of Geography Consisting of Thirty-Five Maps 1796' no printed analogue to this located. A 'Contents' page follows the title offering a diagram of 'Circles' followed by the 35 maps that cover Europe the Americas North America and South America Ireland Scotland 6 maps of the legal circuits in England the 'War on the Rhine' concluding with 'East Indies and China' West Indies and 'Epitome of the Old World' 'of the New World' 'of England'. Maps drawn in ink on the rectos and explanatory details opposite. Maps 1-32 are each presented twice. The first version presents the topographical outline only; the second also has the apparatus and key. The three epitome maps 33-35 are presented once only with full apparatus. An additional map on watermarked paper from 1800 and also initialled 'M.L.S.' is also laid in. The manuscript runs to pp 144 plus a single leaf laid in & terminal blanks. 17693726<p>First published as Soupers de la cour in 1755 Menon's work first appeared in English in 1767 in a translation by Bernard Clermont under the title The Art of Modern Cookery Displayed Consisting of the most approved methods of cookery &c. London printed for the translator 1767. This is its first appearance under the new title which was to be retained for the third edition of 1776 in which the translator's name appears on the title-page. With a six-page 'Translator's Apology' in addition to the 'Author's Advertisement'. In his fascinating apology Clermont reveals many of the concerns of the eighteenth century chef while pointing to some of the key differences between English and French cuisine. He also writes about the challenges of translation: 'This Book was published in four small Volumes. I thought it too full of Words and of Repetitions and that the Sense of the Author could be explained without all the volubility of the French Language which I have as much as I was capable supplied with the Expressiveness of the English' p. vi.<br /><br />'Menon's book covers menus hors d'oeuvres entrées and some deserts. An entire chapter is devoted to sherbets or ices and ice cream. Like Marin that other great contemporary of Menon's both placed emphasis on their sauces. A copy of the first edition had been presented to Zeisberger who expressed the greatest regrets that the names of Eliot McKee and other former enemies of the mission had been recorded as they had since repented. At his request the names of many who had brought terrible misfortunes upon the missionaries and their converts were omitted in this translation. Size of frame with engraving: 43.5 cm x 33.5 cm. Size of the actual engraving: 36 cm x 24 cm. Frame with some minor signs of wear rubbing to the frame with some discoloration. The engraving in excellent conditon with only faint signs of a former fold to upper left corner. The London Charterhouse is a historic complex of buildings in Smithfield London dating back to the 14th century. It occupies land to the north of Charterhouse Square. The Charterhouse began as and takes its name from a Carthusian priory founded in 1371 and dissolved in 1537. Substantial fragments remain from this monastic period but the site was largely rebuilt after 1545 as a large courtyard house. Thus today it "conveys a vivid impression of the type of large rambling 16th century mansion that once existed all round London". The Charterhouse was further altered and extended after 1611 when it became an almshouse and school endowed by Thomas Sutton. The almshouse a home for gentlemen pensioners still occupies the site today under the name Sutton's Hospital in Charterhouse. Wikipedia unknown

The thesis is one of the classic medical doctoral dissertations of the 18th century written during the rectorship of Hermann Scholten 1726-1783 in years considered to be close to the peak of Leiden University's scientific authority. No." followed by pencilled number "1046" all on verso. Framed. Provenance: Linel ink collector's stamp on verso.<br/> <br/> A high quality image that clearly is drawn from life as the inscription claims. The artist's use of a dark prepared ground recalls the work of Barbara Regina Dietsch and her family. A search of Nissen's index of artists reveals one possible name: the Swiss artist Johann Emmanuel Wyss 1782-1837. However the maturity and assurance shown in the present drawing would seem to rule him out: he could have been no older than nine in April 1791. unknown
17508801750. Ink wash in gray and black with heightening in brown pen and ink on cream laid paper laid down to an archival matrix 9 3/4 x 7 inches 247 x 178 mm. In good condition with some minor surface soiling and slight attenuation especially visible in the areas with brown ink. Adhesive residue on the verso at the top corners and bottom center margin does not effect the recto. The name "Argentini." appears in ink on the recto in the lower right margin. unknown
