1868List1022Oberlin 1868. Albumen photographs 2 ½ x 3 ½ inches on larger mounts. Some fading to one of the photographs other image with excellent contrast near fine condition overall. Near Fine. An uncommon early pair of views of the Second Ladies' Boarding House at Oberlin College in the 1860s taken at a time when Oberlin was one of few coeducational colleges having first admitted women in 1837. Oberlin's Second Ladies Hall was built in 1861-1863 and featured Itlianate architecture and a rooftop balcony. The building was opened for student accommodations in 1865. The first floor held an assembly room a reading room a dining room parlors and stewards' quarters. The second and third floors housed 100 women. A massive butcher presides in front of his stall pointing out the benefits of a gargantuan joint of beef. His clientele dressed in ostentatious costume look on as he points of the merits of his wares: "There is not such dignified Beef in the Market - believe me Right Honorable every Inch of it; Coronets marked in the fat and Genealogy in the lean - had it pon Honor - from my Lord cram Bullock - delicious! - you may smell the Oil Cake a mile - no vulgar ingredients - only half a Crown per pound - a mere trifle - I have indeed some low bred beef at Sixpence but I am sue Sir it would not suit your refined Taste." The gentleman answers: "Why look ye - Master Suet as I am not over ambitious if you please - I'll have a slice of the Citizen." His wife adds: "Husband dont be so Wulgar I say send home a Sir Loin of true Nobility." Light foxing small close tear to top edge. The explorations of these areas as recorded by Louis de Carne 1843-1871 son of the politician and academician Louis-Marie de Carne count of Carne-Marcein 1804-1876 was a French explorer. Appointed by his uncle the Governor General of Cochinchina Pierre-Paul de La Grandiere Louis de Carne participated as an attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the French Mekong expedition from 1866 to 1868 under the command of Ernest Doudart de Lagree an expedition of which he was the youngest member. The only civilian in the mission and directly responsible to the governor he was often in conflict with the other members of the expedition because of his special position. He was tasked with the descriptive part of the trip and more particularly for commercial information. Seriously ill on his return he could not finish writing his travel notes. After his death it was his father who took charge of the preface and the publication of the book in 1872. This work was immediately translated and published in English." "In 1839 Stewart translated Billard's The Diseases of Children from the French with an appendix of one hundred pages of Stewart's pediatric comments. His own Diseases of Children was first published in 1841. In it pathological anatomy and Laennec's innovation of auscultation were mentioned for the first time in an American pediatric text. About the year 1850 Stewart . originated a plan for the establishment of a hospital for children in New York City. When the institution was opened on March 1 1854 under the name of the New York Nursery and Child's Hospital it was the only hospital on this continent devoted to children. A fair number of articles are on apples and cider including: "How to Gather Cider Apples" "Bottling Cider" "The Northern Spy as a 'Keeping' Apple" "Apples and Cider" and "The Market Apples of New England". Parker Scammon is an officer with the United Army Corps of Topographic Engineers. Parker would later command the 23rd Ohio Regiment during the Civil War. <br /> <br />Good Friday Morn. 1846 <br /> <br />My Dearest brother <br /> <br />Parker fully intended to cover this envelope to you but as he was about doing it the Quartermaster must needs send for him to come to the Library for some important briefings: and so he begs me to write for him and apologize to the best of my ability for the non-appearance of your beer. You must have thought him very neglectful and tho' it is rather an awkward task I will tell you the whole truth. If you will have patience to wait till the end of this month it shall then be forthcoming. He expected to order it on the 1st but our cook took it into his head to go back to the city to live and as we had at his own request kept back the quarter part of his wages for 18 months you must know our last month's pay went with a rush and as we are so involved on every side we wont borrow and therefore all parties ourselves included must wait till after another visit from the Paymaster for our good beer. I have thus most frankly stated to you the case and I hope you will excuse it. We remember that we are still considerably in your debt so that it is with great pleasure that P. will attend to your order just so soon as circumstances will permit. I think the value of the empty half barrels returned is $1.50 each and they quite well have them as money.
