Shelf location labels to spines small stamps to title pages. $250. Valuable for their insights into New Brunswick during the late nineteenth century these volumes are from a series that commenced in 1786. Settled by the French New Brunswick was taken by the British in 1759 and incorporated into the colony of Nova Scotia. Its population expanded significantly through an influx of Loyalists after the American Revolution. Its enlarged population and distance from Halifax the capital of Nova Scotia led the colonial administrators to establish New Brunswick as a separate colony in 1784. The first collection of New Brunswick acts covering the years 1786-1805 was published in 1805. In 1867 New Brunswick was one of the six colonies that became the Canadian Confederation. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink filling most of both sides of a sheet of cream paper approximately 8 inches high by 6 inches wide bordered in black. The letter is tipped onto a slightly larger piece of card stock. Signed "Howard Douglas". There is a tiny chip to the left edge of the black border. Folded twice for mailing. Very good <p>Howard Douglas writes to Colonel John St. George 1812-1891 Director of Ordnance at the War Office asking for the return of a drawing of a gun which he wants to include in his upcoming book "Treatise on Naval Gunnery" fifth edition revised published in 1860. "I am anxious for the return of the drawing which I sent to you of the Armstrong Naval Gun on its carriage.The omission would deprive my work of a good deal of interest.I have stopped the Press waiting for your reply".<p>General Sir Howard Douglas 3rd Baronet 1776-1861 was a British military officer and Member of Parliament for Liverpool from 1842-1847. After entering the Royal Military Academy Woolwich he was commissioned Second Liutenant in the Royal Artillery in 1794 becoming Lieutenant a few months later. He served as Governor of New Brunswick from 1823-31 and had to deal with the Maine boundary dispute with the United States of 1828. He also founded Fredericton College now known as the University of New Brunswick and was its first Chancellor. From 1835 to 1840 he was Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands where he introduced a new code of laws known as "the Douglas code". The code infuriated the Greek Orthodox patriarchate in that it included innovations affecting family life especially marriage and divorce. Abused or abandoned women could more easily obtain a divorce. Further it legalized marriage between step-siblings and second cousins. Douglas was the author of several important military and naval treatises including the "Treatise on Naval Gunnery" of which the fifth edition is referred to in this letter. 189223670New Brunswick New Jersey: David Clark 355 George St. 1892. Cabinet card portrait by 19th century New Jersey photographer David Clark 1825 - 1902. " In 1852 Clark took over Vail's gallery on Peace Street where he remained until relocating probably in 1863 to King Block Commerce Square. There he continued until 1891 at which time he moved to George Street. In 1851 Clark exhibited a few very fine daguerreotypes including a highly praised portrait of a lady at the first World's Fair at the Crystal Palace in London. At the New Jersey State Fair in 1857 he was awarded the prize for the best daguerreotypes in the state. Clark did a large portrait business but he also did other kinds of work including now rare stereographic views of New Brunswick. His career of fifty years spanned important developments in photographic technology so his work is found in a variety of formats and techniques; the most commonly seen today are cartes-de-visite. Clark died in 1902; soon thereafter Isaac S. Van Derveer 1880-1975 was operating at Clark's last location and may have acquired his negatives. A collection of Van Derveer negatives including a few that may be Clark's are now at Special Collections Rutgers University New Brunswick " ref. 2010 Saretzky Nineteenth Century New Jersey Photographers; photo is of a well-dressed & groomed young gentleman sitter not named; approx. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" overall size; front of mount card with the D. 1864106796<p>Unbound colored engraved map decorative boarder 14"x 11". Slight toning browning and aging; overall very bright and clear and in very good shape. Maps are wrapped with acid free board or in rigid sleeves. The Mitchell family started to produce atlases in 1846 and continued into the early 1890s. Around 1860 S. Augustus Mitchell Jr. took over and the atlas would be called Mitchell's New General Atlas. This is a colorful map of a portion of eastern Canada from the 1864 installment of that atlas. The map is bright and crisp and includes a small inset map of Halifax. Extra postage may be required. Ristow 311-313. # 103218</p>
