Rothschild began collecting 18th-century books and manuscripts in 1932 whilst studying at Trinity College Cambridge. The collection boasts a particular emphasis on Jonathan Swift. These copies are from the library of Donald 1909-1966 and Mary 1912-2003 Hyde with their book label present. The Hyde's library is revered as one of the largest private collections of 18th-century literature and the premier collection of books and manuscripts relating to Samuel Johnson. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. 2 vols large octavo. Original red quarter cloth spines lettered in gilt grey cloth sides top edge red. Contemporary The Times article on Rothschild Collection loosely inserted. Pencilled inscription on front free endpaper noting that most of the collection is now housed in Trinity College Library.
