188276605Zurich: Orell Fussli ca. 1882. First edition. Oblong quarto 11 x 8 inches. the book consists entirely of 23 finely executed and very expensively printed tinted lithographs of the company’s various factories and offices in Europe and England. Each lithograph is printed on thick clay paper and bound to a stub. Publisher’s red cloth with beveled edges bevels blind stamped in an Etruscan key pattern front cover with elaborate gilt lettering faux moire silk endpapers. A very good copy of an important and very scarce item. OCLC locates 2 copies but one is an online resource and the other gives no location conceivably making this the the only known copy.Gail Borden invented condensed milk during the time af the Civil war and it was a huge success. Unlike regular milk it was portable over great distances had a very long shelf life and it was safe. Two brothers George and Charles Page from Illinois one of whom came into contact with condensed milk as a soldier in the civil war sought to emulate this success by opening a condensed milk factory is Switzerland a place renown for it’s dairy industry to supply the European market with condensed milk. They named it the Anglo-Swiss company as their target market was Great Britain. But they were successful beyond their dreams and by 1891 it had 12 factories across Europe and the US that exported worldwide. Anglo Swiss then expanded into the USA by purchasing its first factory in Middletown New York and its second around 1889 then the largest condensed milk factory in the world in the Page brothers' home town of Dixon Illinois. This book was likely printed as a celebration for the companies newly opened North American factories. It must have had a very small print run due to its luxurious production and was perhaps only given to large shareholders. At the same time as Page brothers were introducing condensed milt to Europe a young German pharmacist by the same of Henri Nestle had developed and was producing a viable powdered milk product that was used as a substitute for breast milk. He too was extremely successful. The competition between the companies was fierce. From the company's website -- "Nestlé Company’s history began in 1866 with the establishment of the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company by two US brothers Charles and George Page. Using plentiful supplies of fresh milk in Switzerland they applied knowledge gained in their homeland to establish Europe’s first condensed milk production facility in Cham. They began supplying the product under the Milkmaid brand to Europe’s industrial towns marketing it as a safe long-lasting alternative to fresh milk. In 1905 Henri Nestle’s company merged with Anglo-Swiss to form what is now known as the Nestlé Group." Nestle still produces condensed milk under the Milkmaid brand to this day. 18408144New York: John B. Rey 1840. Broadside 16.5 x 22.3 cm. printed one side only with split fountain roller rainbow. Illustrated. Date range from the range of listings in directories etc. We would be tempted to call this a trade card but for the thin stock it is printed on more fit to be pasted up than handed out. Described as a "manufacturer of cordials bitters essences syrups rock candy sweetmeats brandy fruits sweet plain and fancy chocolate prepared cocoa cocoa paste vermicelli maccaroni catsups sauces extracts etc. John B. Rey was located at 31 & 33 Burling Slip" Doggett's New-York City Directory for 1848-49 page 340; earlier listings were just "33 Burling Slip". At the time of the Directory's publication seven chocolate makers were listed. John B. Rey's operation was taking advantage of the rapid industrialization of the chocolate making process as this card depicts two pieces of large machinery - a melangeur right and a cacao press - that would have been driven by steam notice the belt drives in the image. Burling Slip was just north of South Street and the South Street Seaport with its famous fish market. Although the printer is not credited this is a noteworthy piece of promotional printing as it displays the split fountain or rainbow roller process of printing multiple colors simultaneously in this case a mirrored red green and blue. A few light creases from folding; some light soiling or foxing. Still near very good and very handsome. Rare. Unrecorded. OCLC records no copies. John B. Rey unknown

An interesting example of official communications concerning trade between colonial Cuba and the Spanish mainland. These include the regulation of shipping to Cuba and by implication the rest of the Caribbean through Gibraltar particularly of French ships leaving Mediterranean ports. 1890502San Francsico California: Pacific Rolling Mill Company 1890. 8vo. 250 x 170 mm. 10 x 7 inches. 100 pp. plus 4 leaves of ruled paper 2 with measurements in manuscript. Illustrated throughout with simple drawings of parts many stenciled with green wash; one plate folding. Bound in limp cloth covered boards title in gilt on front cover; a cloth binding shows some wear to gilt title two pencil drawings on front endpaper; other a very good sound copy. Straight forward price list of iron bar steel rail rolled and forged metal axles nuts bolts washers and dozens of other metal products. There is no introduction about the history of the firm just images of parts prices and a few lines of text describing specifications for some of the more complicated manufacture items. What distinguishes this rare trade catalogue is the design sense of many of the images and the application of stenciled color to highlight the object. The printed form of the parts are in outline and as one pages through the catalogue the images take on an abstract quality. Metal parts become contoured shapes with form being determined only by the light green wash applied to the physical part of the design. Although unintentional I am sure this late 19th century publication replete with many of the characteristics of period book design exhibits a very modernist feel one that is most unusual in publications of this nature. Although called the 7th edition this is only one of three issues of the PRMC's product guide and price list that is known. Organized in 1867 PRMC grew continuously and by 1892 was producing more than 40 thousand tons of iron and steel. "This giant enterprise is so closely identified with the manufacturing interests of the Pacific Coast that there is scarcely a manufacturing firm or corporation on the Coast that does not depend upon its output. The mills are located at Potrero Point in South San Francisco and cover an immense area" Master Hands. Toned some small repaired tears using reversible archival ph-neutral paper-repair tape very good to near fine. Very Good. An interesting document of privateering in the Peninsular war this ‘Public Instrument of Protest‘ documents a Portuguese captain and crew complaint in detail to an English notary. After sailing from Calcutta to Brazil and then from Rio to just outside of Lisbon their ship the 700-ton ‘Oceano’ was seized and comprehensively ransacked by a French privateer the ‘Lion’ out of Lorient. Most of the crew and passengers were offloaded onto a passing American vessel the ‘Leda’ bound for Lisbon. Meanwhile the ‘Lyon’ escorted her prize towards the nearest French port but before a friendly haven was reached they were both set upon by the brigantine HMS ‘Achates’. The ‘Lyon’ escaped but the ‘Ocean’ was captured by Commander Morrison and the ‘Achetes’. The ’Ocean’ was taken to Plymouth and moored in the Hamoaze. The remaining Portuguese crew who had been forced to remain aboard the ‘Ocean’ by the French got a message to the ‘Ocean’s Master Dn. Ignacio Joze Martins and he and the boatswain made their way to Plymouth as quickly as possible. The sworn statement presented here is in English thanks to the translation given by Francisco Martins d' Magalhaens master of a Portuguese ship “now dwelling in Plymouthâ€

The ’Oceano’ sailed from Calcutta to Brazil arriving 10th February 1813. She left Rio on 4th April all was plain sailing until the afternoon of the 7th June off the Rock of Lisbon when the ‘Lion’ showed up first under false British colors then French. The fighting was fierce the privateer was driven off once but eventually the ‘Oceano’ was taken. The night of the 7th June was spent by the French ‘conveying everything Moveable and Valuable from the Ocean to the Privateer’. The ‘Leda’ the US vessel landed the majority of the ‘Ocean’s crew including the Master in Lisbon on the evening of the 9th June.Monday 14th June the ‘Lyon’ engaged in a running battle with HMS ‘Achates’ and escaped but the ‘Achates’ did capture the ‘Ocean’. Wednesday 16th June the ‘Ocean’ arrived in Plymouth under the watchful eye of the ‘Achates’. Receiving the crew’s message the Captain of the ‘Ocean’ left Lisbon for Falmouth and then Plymouth arriving on the 20th July. The document was dated 21st July 1813.

Full transcription available. unknown
