Overlapping colour-pictorial gate-fold card covers with panoramas of 'Early Adelaide' and 'Modern Adelaide' front and rear and with line illustrations of the site of the cafe then-and-now inside the respective covers; covers lightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities with surface loss to a tiny area of the front cover; bottom half of the front gate-fold hinge split but now expertly sealed; an excellent copy of a lavish brochure. 'The Ellis Cafe organisation was formed about 1917 as bakers pastry cooks caterers fruiterers and confectioners. The office and factory was at 120 Gouger Street Adelaide with a restaurant Covent Gardens at 50 later 68 King William Street the Arcadia Cafe in Bowman's Buildings King William Street the Maple Leaf Cafe at 21 Rundle Street and two others in the central business district. The Ellis Cafes ceased trading in 1952' State Library of South Australia B 72464/5. This attractive souvenir was prepared to celebrate the reopening of the cafe in late 1924 after extensive renovations. An article in the Adelaide 'News' on Saturday 20 December 1924 notes that the 'booklet is a triumph for its compilers and its illustrator Mr E. A combination trade catalogue and cookbook produced by Philadelphia's Abram Cox Stove Company. Includes Bills of Fare for winter and summer dinners and advice on setting the table. The recipes are uncredited. The rear of the book includes an envelope pasted down and printed with "Use this pocket for clippings". ~ Internally clean and sound. In publisher's cream-colored oilcloth boards printed in navy blue. Some light adhesion to oilcloth corners slightly rubbed otherwise fine. Scarce. OCLC locates six copies. Each catalogue is illustrated and most include select full-color images. Including the Erie Can Company’s there are four general catalogues that cover a broad range of products; three catalogues are specific to syrup cans; and the remainder feature one specific type of product or another. ~ Incorporated in 1901 the American Can Company was a member of the “Tin Can Trust†that controlled a large percentage of the tin market. In 1913 the U.S. Government sued the company on the grounds of monopoly. The individual catalogues: 1. American Can Company. American Steel Lead Kegs. New York: American Can Company circa 1908. 24 pages. Steel kegs for lead manufacturers and lead users; features product descriptions for five unique kegs and over 25 testimonials from consumers across the country. Illustrated cover. Flush-cut quarter cloth and red papered card covers with both sides extensively lettered and decorated in gilt; a large two-colour illustration on the front cover; a very fine copy it appears to be uncirculated in the original plain envelope a little marked and torn. 'Sole agents for Julius Feurich Leipzig; R. Lipp & Sohn Stuttgart; R. Görs & Kallmann Berlin; Carl Faust & Sohn pianos; the "Waldorf" pianos; also Estey-Organs over 400000 sold' subtitle. 'In 1898 Albert Conrad designer of Austral Buildings in Hindley Street was commissioned to create Kuhnel's emporium that expanded to house 400 pianos at 136 Rundle Street opposite Adelaide Arcade . By the 1920s Kuhnel's was the largest piano and organ store in Australia' AdelaideAZ website. The only copy of this lavish catalogue located in Trove is in the National Library of Australia: 'A finely printed trade catalogue intended for this Adelaide piano importer's wealthier clients .
