1895499Columbus Ohio and New York 1895. 8vo. 190 x 128 mm. 7 ½ x 5 inches. 144 pp. Illustrated throughout with half-tone images and diagrams 2 of which are folding. Original printed wrappers a few stains but a sound and attractive copy. Specialty items include elevators drive belts conveyors sprocket wheels and machinery for mining and mill factories. Established in Columbus in 1877 Jeffrey Manufacturing was instrumental in developing the mining and coal industries of eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. One of its most important products was the "Jeffrey Electric Locomotive" which moved on tracks inside mines and towed tons of rock and saved hours of labor and contributed to mine safety. Not cited in Romaine. This catalogue is one of the few original sources documenting mining equipment produced by the largest industrial plants in Ohio at the end of the nineteenth century. unknown

Although not stated in OCLC. this cops copy has 5 bis plates for no. 22 and one bis plate for no. 66. Publisher's blind ruled brown cloth gilt gilt cover lettering. marbled endpapers From hinge nicely repaired but still with a chip to the loer gutter margin of the marled endpapers. The text block is quite clean. A handsome copy of a wonderful trace catalog.There were 3 or 4 editions of this catalog and the only way of telling the difference is by the plate count which has by far the most number of plates. And this copy has even more as no cataloger have ever mentioned the bis plates. Only 5 of this edition located by OCLC all with no mention of any bis plates. "Little is known about the life of the Parisian publisher of Le Garde-meuble Désiré Guilmard c. 1810-c.1885 except that he founded the publishing firm of D. Guilmard in 1839. Because his name appears as the "delineator" of the majority of the furniture plates in Le Garde-meuble many historians presumed he was a furniture designer. However he is not known to have had a furniture shop nor are there any signed examples of his furniture extant. We do know that Guilmard was closely connected to the Parisian design community and through his numerous publications see below became an influential purveyor of taste. He was also an exceptionally able businessman who promoted French furniture and design during a fifty-year period of rapidly changing taste" Smithsonian. D.Guilmard hardcover
1890502San Francsico California: Pacific Rolling Mill Company 1890. 8vo. 250 x 170 mm. 10 x 7 inches. 100 pp. plus 4 leaves of ruled paper 2 with measurements in manuscript. Illustrated throughout with simple drawings of parts many stenciled with green wash; one plate folding. Bound in limp cloth covered boards title in gilt on front cover; a cloth binding shows some wear to gilt title two pencil drawings on front endpaper; other a very good sound copy. Straight forward price list of iron bar steel rail rolled and forged metal axles nuts bolts washers and dozens of other metal products. There is no introduction about the history of the firm just images of parts prices and a few lines of text describing specifications for some of the more complicated manufacture items. What distinguishes this rare trade catalogue is the design sense of many of the images and the application of stenciled color to highlight the object. The printed form of the parts are in outline and as one pages through the catalogue the images take on an abstract quality. Metal parts become contoured shapes with form being determined only by the light green wash applied to the physical part of the design. Although unintentional I am sure this late 19th century publication replete with many of the characteristics of period book design exhibits a very modernist feel one that is most unusual in publications of this nature. Although called the 7th edition this is only one of three issues of the PRMC's product guide and price list that is known. Organized in 1867 PRMC grew continuously and by 1892 was producing more than 40 thousand tons of iron and steel. "This giant enterprise is so closely identified with the manufacturing interests of the Pacific Coast that there is scarcely a manufacturing firm or corporation on the Coast that does not depend upon its output. The mills are located at Potrero Point in South San Francisco and cover an immense area" Master Hands. Romaine Guide to American Trade Catalogues p. 200 this edition and one from 1886 both known in only one copy each at California Historical Society. OCLC cites an edition from 1885 in one copy at San Francisco Public Library and this edition 1890 also in only one copy at California H. S. Publisher's pale yellow wrappers with the front cover bearing an image of en working a mine and the back with an image of a rock drill. Very old central fold perhaps for mailing front cover with three old and small taper repairs. A very clean copy of this scarce trade catalog. OCLC only locates one copy.The Rand Drill Company established in the 1870s by brothers Jasper and Addison Rand and the first to see the benefits of Ingersoll's pneumatic drill became a significant name in the development and manufacturing of pneumatic drills and other mining equipment. Simon Ingersoll was an American inventor who created the steam-powered percussion rock drill which replaced the hand drill and was a major advancement in the mining and construction industries. Simon Ingersoll founded Ingersoll Rock Drill Company in 1871 in New York and in 1888 it combined with Sergeant Drill to form Ingersoll Sergeant Drill Company. In 1905 Ingersoll-Sergeant Drill Company merged with the Rand Drill Company to form the mega-corporation Ingersoll Rand. Ingersoll himself died penniless. Rand Drill Co. unknown

De La Vergne organized the De La Vergne Refrigeration Machine Co. The original intent was to manufacture refrigeration machines for breweries. His first machine had a 70-ton refrigeration capacity for Burr & Son Co. brewery in New York City. Soon the company was providing refrigeration for most of America’s best known breweries as well as some overseas. By the 1890s De La Vergne refrigeration was used by hotels restaurants dairies creameries chocolate manufacturers steamships and many more businesses.After De La Vergne died in 1892 the business was taken over by Jacob Ruppert who was interested in oil engines to meet the demand to power ice-making machines. “The result†said the 1936 issue of the Baldwin-Southwark Magazine “was the first commercially successful oil engine in the world.†In 1903 De La Vergne Refrigeration manufactured a 125 HP dual flywheel oil engine for display at the 1904 World’s Fair in St.Louis. Dean Steam Pump is one of the most respected brands in its industry. Established after the Civil War the company under various ownerships has produced reliable and industrial grade pumping systems and over time has introduced innovations that have been become standards for the entire trade. In the 19th century the company made the transition from steam to turbine to electric pumps and produced vacuum pumps air pumps circulating pumps etc. for such diverse businesses as maple sugar companies to petroleum refiners. Romaine Guide to American Trade Catalogues p. 297 cites an 1890 edition published from the New York Offices and this edition published in 1897. A couple of chips to the lower corner of rear wrappers one of the foldouts with a tear at the fold-line light spine erosion. But a very good copy of this very ephemeral piece. Game rules seem to have had short life spans.There is no history or definition of this game but from reading the catalog it seems to be a variety of croquet. But instead of simple hoops this game used very elaboarate and expensive pieces. Castles that actually look like castles for example. The printed paper wrapperstwo brads split to upper spine tell us that Albert Grosfeld's main showroom was on Third Avenuce in New York City but he also had showrooms in Chicago and Los Angele. Is is accompanied by 100 placards showing the furniture on offer. Each card measures 7 5/8 by 9 1/2 inches and bears a photographic illustration of the piece along with a printed description stock number and dimensions As follows: 1111/20150 Adam Satinwood Writing Desk hand-decorated leather top. MADE IN ENGLAND. H. 38". W. 42". D. 23". Very good condition.The company seems to have specilaized in high end reproductions of antique furniture. 1814List3201Birmingham United Kingdom 1814. Copper medal measuring 1 ½ inches in diameter. Appears Very Fine. A copper medal commemorating the passage of the United Kingdom’s Slave Trade Act 1807 produced for distribution in Sierra Leone. One side depicts a European and an African man shaking hands and reads “WE ARE ALL BRETHREN†and exergue: “SLAVE TRADE ABOLISHED BY GREAT BRITAIN 1807â€. The reverse is inscribed in Arabic and reads translated “Sale of slaves prohibited in 1807 Christian era in the reign of George the Third; verily we are all brothers.†The 1807 act did not abolish slavery but rather criminalized British participation in the African branch of the slave trade; it was enforced by the Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron in the so-called Blockade of Africa. The squadron was based in Freetown Sierra Leone’s capital and would bring freed people from intercepted slave ships to the city. unknown

A cash book for an unnamed business selling out of California Oregon and New Jersey in 1896. The book records total merchandise value cash and accounts liabilities individual sales and so on. The business sold a variety of items from raw cloth and furniture to food coffee and tea and soap. Most of the entries are from Sonora; located on California’s Mother Lode Sonora was by 1896 a bustling mining town. unknown

Early pencil gift inscription to a Mary F. Sisson dated 1854. <br /> <br /> A religious and temperance miscellany mostly short moral tales with a few verse works interspersed. T.S. Arthur 1809-1885 is best-remembered for his hugely popular temperance trace Ten Nights in A Bar-Room and What I Saw There 1854 but he was an incredibly prolific writer churning out more than 100 titles between 1840 and the early 1880s. Bookseller's label on front pastedown.<br/> <br/> Account book of Atlantic trading voyages.<br/> <br/> An interesting manuscript ship's log containing financial accounts for the brigs Nimrod and Jasper for an eight year period from 1826 to 1833 while they were under the command of a Captain John Hill. The two ships made numerous voyages between the United States Europe and the Caribbean. The present log book contains line accounts of expenditures for journeys from London and Marseilles to New York and Norfolk in 1827; from Antwerp to London in 1828; from Philadelphia to the West Indies in 1829; from Madeira to the Turks Islands in 1831; from the West Indies to Pensacola to Havana in 1832; from the Indies to New York in 1833; and other similar voyages. The log also contains two copies of an 1832 letter written in Havana by Hill to merchants there inquiring about the price of molasses and a list of port charges at several major way points. 18803068<p>Ath Belgium: L.&H. Cambier Frères n.d. ca. 1880 .</p><p><br />Rare profusely illustrated trade catalogue from the late 19th century depicting furniture made by L.&H. Cambier Frères of Ath Belgium. <br /><br />The catalogue consists of 107 lithographed plates depicting a wide variety of chairs sofas tables desks beds and more including children's furniture. Plates 108-122 contain decorative borders but no other illustrations presumably so items could be added when Cambier Frères introduced new furniture designs. <br /><br />Apparently it was fine to add items to the catalogue but buyers were advised not to cut out the drawings. "Ne découpez pas les dessins indiquez-nous simplement le numéro de l'objet" it says at the bottom of each plate. <br /><br />Plates 31-33 depict chairs very similar in style to those designed by the German-Austrian cabinet maker Michael Thonet. In fact chair No. 14 on plate 31 is exactly the same as Thonet's iconic No. 14 bistro chair. <br /><br />There's no date given for the catalogue but we estimate ca. 1880 based on the style of furniture. That's also when the brothers Léon and Henri Cambier expanded the Ath factory that their father Emmanuel had founded in 1835. <br /><br />This catalogue is rare with OCLC showing a single institutional holding at the University of Leeds. None in commerce. <br /><br />A wonderful look at European furniture of the late 19th century with numerous detailed illustrations by Breger & Javal Paris. RARE. <br /><br />PHYSICAL DETAILS: Oblong Small Quarto 9.75 x 7 inches; 250 x 178 mm 2 122 pages in original red cloth decorated and lettered in gilt. <br /><br />CONDITION: Small water stain to front cover slight flaring of upper board rubbing and fraying to spine and board edges offsetting to end papers light toning to page extremities. It records "Bum Boat General Store Keepers Butcher & Bakers Commission Agents & c and Coal Merchants". <br /> <br /> This card hails from the period following the Treaty of Tianjin which ended the Second Opium War opened more Chinese ports to foreign trade and allowed foreign legations in the Chinese capital. "Bum boats" were small water taxis and boats used for short trips.<br /> <br /> Chinese text in 2 vertical columns to left and right of English text. Removed from an album with black paper adhering to verso. 4 1/4 x 2 3/4" unknown
