M.; Tuesday February 18 1873 - 4:35 P. M.; Wednesday February 19 1873 - 7:35 A. M.; Wednesday February 19 1873 - 4:35 P. M.; Wednesday February 19 1873 - 11 P. M.; 8 3/4 x 11 1/2; relief shown by hachures and gradient tints; small reference table in the lower half of the image; edges brittle with small chips and cuts; overall in good to very good condition. A scarce collection of maps their publication began in January of 1871 with no less than 3 maps being published every day. Samuel Morse's invention of the telegraph had made it possible to easily observe gather and transmit data from different points over the entire country. A small note at the head read: "All observations made at the same moment of actual not local time." Released by the US Army's Signal Service the maps were intented to be primarily used by farmers and merchants. They were published in at least three different sizes and formats the current being one of the smaller ones. These particular maps showed precipitation and wind velocity at various elevation points. Published by Order of the Secretary of War unknown

Stiff alligator-texture embossed paper boards with gilt stamped titles and decoration side stapled edges stained red. Front hinge detached and back hinge starting spine chipped cover soiled with corners bumped and edges rubbed blank preliminary inscribed and dated "1 2 91" with an erasure in the upper corner. Leaves are otherwise bright and unmarked. Published the year following the Great Seattle Fire. The first page of this ambitious promotion commemorates the recent incorporation of the Chamber of Commerce March 3 1890 stating its mission and listing its officers with portrait photos. In sum the lauded "Seattle Spirit" is manifested in this lavish promotional mere months following the disaster that leveled the city.It begins with a survey of state resources then Seattle history with its commercial and cultural infrastructure followed by proud and optimistic descriptions of member businesses and commercial developments provided by their owners. With fine illustrations including architect's renderings of new commercial and residential buildings. Scarce at best.A scarce promotional recorded by OCLC as held by 10 libraries four of them in Washington State. Now housed in a clear archival pouch with acid free backing. Trapani 1840-49.Small folio pp. 196 of pre-printed shipping manifest forms of which 137 completed in ink; contemporary flexible vellum-backed marbled paper boards with ink-lettered label to upper board; corners bumped and spine a little chipped.Fine documentation of the maritime trade from the harbour of Trapani in Sicily. The manifest gives bills of lading from January 1840 to March 1849. The pre-printed manifests are completed in ink giving the name of the freight ship and its captain the destination and then details of its freight i.e. type and quantity of merchandise names of senders and recipients.Trapani boasts some of Europe's oldest salt marshes and salt extraction has been a major business for centuries which still flourishes to the present day. By the nineteenth century Sicilian sea salt was exported to European countries as far away as Norway and Russia. These shipping manifests document that it was sent to destinations as far afield as Constantinople Abo Stavanger Carlscrona Stockholm Bergen Odessa Reval and Riga.Clearly some of the shippers acted on their own account being both captains of the ship and shipper whereas others acted on commission. The shipping routes went through Russian waters which explains the accounts kept by the Russian Vice Consulate.

Intented to be "mailed free to prospective home seekers on application to Secretary of Merchants' Exchange or Board of Trade Oakland Cal." the book was pronounced by then former Mayor William R. Davis to be: ".the best and most accurate presentation of our resources and local attractive features and as an advertising medium yet published in the interest of Alameda County." It began with an aptly-titled chapter - "Deadly Parallel" - listing specific statistics and numbers from August 1896 of people dying of heat-stroke in cities around the country while in Oakland the temperature is balmy 65 degrees. It proceeds to describe Alameda County and the City of Oakland their climate resources modern ammenities notable businesses often with flowery and/or bombastic statements e.g. "One does not need to sniff the odor of the Chicago River or of its immense piggeries as a New Yorker contemptuously styled its huge pork-packing establishments to realize that he is in the Garden City." Tribute of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York to the Memory of Horace B. Claflin

188629001127New York: Atlantic Publishing & Engraving of New York 1886. The front cover and first page of the booklet are detached. The title on the front cover is faded and hard to read. General soiling and toning due to age. The bulletin has been folded. The large format memoriam is trimmed on the edges. Two items advertising the memorial of Horace Brigham Claflin who was an American merchant who founded the Bulkley & Claflin Company later after Claflin's death it became known as H. B. Claflin Company. Over the years this bank was acquired many times and is still in existence today under JP Morgan Chase. The first item is apparently from the Dry Goods Bulletin which serves as an memoriam/obituary for Claflin. The front side has an engraving of Claflin as well as his birth and death dates December 18 1811 - November 14 1885. The back side has a description of his life. Measures 14 1/4" x 12 3/4". The second item is a 16 pg booklet done by the New York Chamber of Commerce that is the minutes of the meeting following Claflin's death as well as a biographical sketch of the man. The booklet states that "Mr. Claflin was one of the great merchants which the present century has produced and his life and character present a striking illustration of the maxim 'Act well your part there all the honor lies.' " pg. 3 The meeting end with several resolutions one of which was "the entire community of dry good merchants are called upon to mourn the loss not only of the most eminent member of their profession but also of a true friend." pg. 11 #1 This was accomplished when on the day of his funeral "the wholesale stores and commission houses throughout the dry goods district in New York City closed at noon and business was suspended. That portion of the City usually so active and busy was silent and deserted." pg. 15 The booklet also includes a portrait engraving of Claflin. Black covers. Measures 9 1/4" x 6" This was a dry good business that acted as middlemen between the manufacturers and retailers of dry goods. Additionally he founded the Continental Bank of New York in 1870 along with Jacob H. Schiff Marcellus Hartley Robert L. Cutting and Joseph Seligman.
