This Senate documents prints the memorial from America's foremost learned society asserting that that any tax on imported books is "detrimental to the progress of knowledge" and asking that those duties be suspended. The memorials written by Peter Duponceau and R.M. Patterson review the policies of other governments toward duties on imported books providing a useful survey of the tax policies of the major European powers. His success as a bookseller his efforts to organize the trade and to improve the distribution of books were as notable as what he published." Tebbel HISTORY v1 pp. 106 - 109. Trade card 13 x 7.5 cm. printed both sides the verso in chromolithography depicting the interior of a dining car with tables set in anticipation of the passengers' meals. Text on the recto reads "These Dining and Restaurant Cars run on the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad between Chicago and Omaha are in all respects the most luxurious traveling conveniences on the American continent. A bottle of fine French wine is served for an additional fifteen cents with an Extra Fine Meal for which only seventy-five cents is charged. Passengers will bear in mind that these are not the commonly-called Hotel Cars with their attendant high prices and bed-room odors. Our Dining Cars are used for no other purpose. All meals on Overland Trains are served in them. A. Smith Sup't Dining Car Line." The company became the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad in 1866 the company changed names frequently. In the mid-1870s the company established its Chicago-Omaha route. As such this card likely dates between the mid-1860s and mid-1870s. The railroad became known for introducing the first "elegant" dining cars to passenger trains and the lithograph on this trade card by Shober & Carqueville Lithographers of Chicago exudes elegance indeed. Rochester N.Y.: D.M. Dewey n.d. ca. 1872. An early American trade catalogue of Fruit Flowers Trees and Nursery stock issued according to the Smithsonian Library "ca. 1872" by the firm of D.M. Dewey Rochester N.Y. Many of the plates have captions giving name of variety of plant and brief information on main characteristics and growing season. The Smithsonian copy contains only 24 plates compared to the 40 in the above copy. "Nurserymen's plates were an American innovation. They were made by various methods the most distinctive being painted in watercolors. In design and coloring these plates were more akin to folk painting than to the commercial art of their time" Charles von Ravenswaay "Drawn and Colored from Nature" in Antiques Magazine March 1983 pp. 594-599.
