Illustrated with thousands of black and white illustrations depicting everything that could have anything to do with horses as well as 11 chromolithographs; The title page 4 double sided advertisements and 6 single sided with tissue guard. The 4 double sided ads have 2 with color only on one side and 2 with color to both sides. Externally the brown cloth boards are worn faded and soiled. The cloth is separating from the boards at the front lower right hand corner and on the rear lower left hand corner. The top spine edge is torn on the right side and the bottom spine edge is frayed and worn. Internally the book is in wonderful condition. The pages are fresh and the color plates are in very good condition. A couple of the tissue guards are torn but still present. There are several pages with very small edge tears to the outside edge as if from turning the pages as the book is folio sized. Marbled endpapers with engraved label for "Baily Brothers Booksellers Stationers Account Book Manufacturers" London to the front pastedown. 172pp. of manuscript text in ink on red-ruled laid paper watermarked "W. King / 1850" followed by c.160pp. blank with a handful of pages torn out following the conclusion of the manuscript text section and another within the text. The majority of entries are in English with some in Spanish mostly written in the same hand. Condition is very good the binding firm with marking to the boards chipping to the head of the spine and a little wear to the extremities. The contents with a 3cm tear to the head of the first text page and two pages partially cut/torn away at the bottom are otherwise in good order. The ledger of a British sales agents operating in Panama during the mid-nineteenth century detailing the importation and sale of a wide variety European and South American goods into the country.</p><p>The manuscript meticulously records the origin city/country importer ship the goods received and sold and the charges entailed for each shipment. A typical entry for example records the arrival of "gunpowder received per "Alexander" and sold on behalf of the Kames Gunpowder Company Glasgow" followed by details of the subsequent purchasers "J. D. Cordova" etc. and the charges/commissions taken by the agent including fees for landing expenses and "carriage to arsenal". </p><p>Many of the entries describe large diverse cargoes combining both essential and luxury goods including: alpacas; chocolate pots; "41 cases of pickles and mustard"; lavender water; rocking chairs; a "copying machine"; cinnamon; scissors razors; bone buttons; horse brushes; compasses; gin; hatchets; bedsteads; looking glasses; children's toys; cloves; muslins; kegs of shot; cups and saucers; tobacco; machetes; claret; playing cards rat traps; "Aqua de Colonia" cologne; silk gloves; saddles; blunderbusses; padlocks; lace; pantaloons; "Jamaica rum"; almonds; vinegar; bonnets; sausages; gold frames; water closets; wash stands; champagne; mosquito nets; and much else besides.</p><p>The origin ports include major European trade centres such as Liverpool and Glasgow but also include many South American ports such as Guayaquil Equador carrying beans cocoa coffee sugar and quinoa amongst other things; Buenaventura Colombia; Callao Peru carrying candlesticks coffee mills and bayonets; Lima Peru "bottled fruits" and cherry cordial; and Valparaiso Chile; as well as San Francisco and New York to the north. The importers themselves are also a mixture of British and Panamanian companies.</p><p>A fascinating detailed insight into Panama's transatlantic and South American trade during the mid-nineteenth century. 18803068<p>Ath Belgium: L.&H. Cambier Frères n.d. ca. 1880 .</p><p><br />Rare profusely illustrated trade catalogue from the late 19th century depicting furniture made by L.&H. Cambier Frères of Ath Belgium. <br /><br />The catalogue consists of 107 lithographed plates depicting a wide variety of chairs sofas tables desks beds and more including children's furniture. Plates 108-122 contain decorative borders but no other illustrations presumably so items could be added when Cambier Frères introduced new furniture designs. <br /><br />Apparently it was fine to add items to the catalogue but buyers were advised not to cut out the drawings. "Ne découpez pas les dessins indiquez-nous simplement le numéro de l'objet" it says at the bottom of each plate. <br /><br />Plates 31-33 depict chairs very similar in style to those designed by the German-Austrian cabinet maker Michael Thonet. In fact chair No. 14 on plate 31 is exactly the same as Thonet's iconic No. 14 bistro chair. <br /><br />There's no date given for the catalogue but we estimate ca. 1880 based on the style of furniture. That's also when the brothers Léon and Henri Cambier expanded the Ath factory that their father Emmanuel had founded in 1835. <br /><br />This catalogue is rare with OCLC showing a single institutional holding at the University of Leeds. None in commerce. <br /><br />A wonderful look at European furniture of the late 19th century with numerous detailed illustrations by Breger & Javal Paris. RARE. <br /><br />PHYSICAL DETAILS: Oblong Small Quarto 9.75 x 7 inches; 250 x 178 mm 2 122 pages in original red cloth decorated and lettered in gilt. <br /><br />CONDITION: Small water stain to front cover slight flaring of upper board rubbing and fraying to spine and board edges offsetting to end papers light toning to page extremities. An interesting contemporary tract concerning the fall off in agricultural industrial and mineral production in New Spain during the War for Independence. The author José Maria Quiros was a bureaucrat at the Spanish colonial consulate in Veracruz and is therefore particularly attentive to shipping and exports. A folding chart at the rear prints annual production numbers for products and materials in each of the three categories. A handful of copies in OCLC. unknown
1814List3201Birmingham United Kingdom 1814. Copper medal measuring 1 ½ inches in diameter. Appears Very Fine. A copper medal commemorating the passage of the United Kingdom’s Slave Trade Act 1807 produced for distribution in Sierra Leone. One side depicts a European and an African man shaking hands and reads “WE ARE ALL BRETHREN†and exergue: “SLAVE TRADE ABOLISHED BY GREAT BRITAIN 1807â€. The reverse is inscribed in Arabic and reads translated “Sale of slaves prohibited in 1807 Christian era in the reign of George the Third; verily we are all brothers.†The 1807 act did not abolish slavery but rather criminalized British participation in the African branch of the slave trade; it was enforced by the Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron in the so-called Blockade of Africa. The squadron was based in Freetown Sierra Leone’s capital and would bring freed people from intercepted slave ships to the city. unknown

18282401Gibraltar 1828. Good. 3pp. on a bifolium. Previously folded with separations. Tanned somewhat brittle. An interesting example of official communications concerning trade between colonial Cuba and the Spanish mainland. In this manuscript letter date March 14 1828 the new Spanish Vice Consul in Gibraltar writes to the Governor General of Cuba concerning several topics. These include the regulation of shipping to Cuba and by implication the rest of the Caribbean through Gibraltar particularly of French ships leaving Mediterranean ports. Also discussed is keeping track of individuals particularly merchants going to Cuba by means of identification papers and other documents. The consul also reminds the colonial government of the importance of documenting duties and tariffs paid for shipping cargo and goods. unknown

A manuscript affidavit written by fur magnate John Baptiste Sarpy of Pierre Chouteau & Co. that gives one a granular sense of the difficulities of running a frontier business dependent on mountain men like Jim Bridger and Frapp.<br/> <br/> A remarkable window onto the business dealings of famed mountain man Jim Bridger this signed manuscript affidavit of John B. Sarpy testifies to his actions on behalf of the estate of fellow fur trader Henry Fraeb also known as Frapp who was killed by Indians in the Rocky Mountains. Sarpy who was a partner in the major fur firm Pierre Chouteau &. Co. had worked closely with Frapp and knew him well. In his affidavit he writes about the Chouteau Company's concerns about Jim Bridger Frapp's partner at the time of his demise and the difficulty of getting Bridger to pay his debts. Written in St. Louis Sarpy's affidavit states: "On the 8th day of August last he was appointed . . . administrator of the estate of Henry Fraeb then lately deceased. Said Fraeb had been a trader in the mountains & was at the time of his death in partnership with a man of the name of James Bridger & said Bridger & Fraeb were indebted to the firm of Pierre Chouteau Jr. & Co. & it was feared by the members of said firm that unless some one became the administrator of the said Fraeb the said Bridger might interpose difficulties in the settlement of the accounts existing between them & Bridger & Fraeb & for the purpose of doing justice to themselves as well as to the said Fraeb the said Sarpy applied for letters of administration which were granted to him as above mentioned. The said Bridger has however since this time been here & has settled in full the accounts existing between the firm of Pierre Chouteau Jr. & Co. & the said Bridger & Fraeb. And the said Sarpy says that no property has come into his hands as the administrator of the said Fraeb although it may be that the said Fraeb has property in the mountain country or in the hands of James Bridger his former partner." Though he may have been one of the greatest and most beloved mountain men of all time Jim Bridger was not the best debtor in the world nor did Pierre Chouteau & Co. forget business. John B. A very scarce and beautifully bound volume of thanks from the London Chamber of Commerce to their treasurer George Sandeman signed by the president of the society and chairman of the council. A really rare item in the London Chamber of Commerce's striking full morocco binding with watered silk endpapers and gilt dentelles.This is a commemorative volume produced by the Chamber to formally record and present an expression of gratitude to Albert G Sandeman for his work as Treasurer to the Chamber.Elegantly bound and signed by the president Albert Pollet chairman of the council W. H. Williams and secretary Kennie B. Murray it reflects the Chamber"s civic and mercantile culture in late Victorian London where ceremonial resolutions addresses and votes of thanks were preserved as tokens of esteem. 18423123New Orleans: January 21 1842. About very good. 3pp. on a folded folio sheet. Old folds. Small loss from wax seal affecting a few words on third page. Light wear and soiling. A wandering "woe is me" missive from Charles Penfield to his business partners back home in Massachusetts detailing his numerous misfortunes on a journey by boat to Mexico and thence to New Orleans. He writes: "To tell you of my misfortunes I think you should rather console with me than to sensure sic me however you can write your friends in Baltimore & let them see me &c. First of my troubles I was fined in Mexico as you have the documents to amount of moste 600 dollars with the expenses. Next misfortune was detained in town 22 days to attend to the board 2 dolls. per day horse hire about 25 or 40 dolls. with expenses on the road vessel being 40 miles before the town. Next I took the yellow fever or Mexican fever & as you must expect my bill was high when I went to town. The deaths was 25 a day population of 6000." He goes on to detail freight costs to New Orleans and the other expenses related to the journey writing: "You had better get these papers translated by some Spanish merchant in Boston & make claim on Mr. Brown." He also notes in a post script that the price of freighting cotton to Liverpool is a half penny per pound. Offers a wealth of handwriting specimens and signatures pretty engraved checks and more from Philadelphia Boston and New York as well as smaller cities and towns in the northeastern United States. Although not stated in OCLC. this cops copy has 5 bis plates for no. 22 and one bis plate for no. 66. Publisher's blind ruled brown cloth gilt gilt cover lettering. marbled endpapers From hinge nicely repaired but still with a chip to the loer gutter margin of the marled endpapers. The text block is quite clean. A handsome copy of a wonderful trace catalog.There were 3 or 4 editions of this catalog and the only way of telling the difference is by the plate count which has by far the most number of plates. And this copy has even more as no cataloger have ever mentioned the bis plates. Only 5 of this edition located by OCLC all with no mention of any bis plates. "Little is known about the life of the Parisian publisher of Le Garde-meuble Désiré Guilmard c. 1810-c.1885 except that he founded the publishing firm of D. Guilmard in 1839. Because his name appears as the "delineator" of the majority of the furniture plates in Le Garde-meuble many historians presumed he was a furniture designer. However he is not known to have had a furniture shop nor are there any signed examples of his furniture extant. We do know that Guilmard was closely connected to the Parisian design community and through his numerous publications see below became an influential purveyor of taste. He was also an exceptionally able businessman who promoted French furniture and design during a fifty-year period of rapidly changing taste" Smithsonian. D.Guilmard hardcover

At first glance this item appears to be in such fine condition that we worried it was a facsimile but it is not. A gorgeous copy.The L. L. Brown Paper Company was founded by Levi Lawrence Brown in 1849. He was born in Adams in 1826 also the birthplace of Susan B. Anthony. After learning the paper trade at the Crane Mills in Dalton Brown started his own business manufacturing high quality ledger paper which he sold in major cities from coast to coast.
