1907h44712Pittsburgh: The Pittsburgh Board of Trade 1907. First Edition. Wraps. Good. 11 x 8 inches recent brown paper covers with a portion of the original brown paper cover affixed to front cover. Good copy name sticker of Mrs. Paul J. Baum on cover again on title page with her name Helen R. Baum written in ink; contents good with light waviness from dampness to pages and faint dampstain observed to upper margins of pages most evident toward the beginning and end. About 150 pp well illustrated text and photos in greentone detailing the charms of Pittsburgh's East End its prominent residents buildings attractions streets schools businesses residences etc. Very uncommon in the trade and OCLC locates 4 holdings in libraries 3 in Pittsburgh and one in Waynesburg PA; unclear about the "computer files" located at other libraries -- probably all digital copies. Only the third copy we've handled in over thirty years. The previous owner and her husband warrant a biography at the Heinz History Center website: "Paul James Baum son of William and Susanna Baum was born in 1895. In December 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Army's Signal Reserve Corps and received a commission in the Balloon Division of the Corps' Aviation Section. In April 1918 Paul James Baum applied for a military discharge as executive head and an irreplaceable employee of the Lawrenceville Bronze Company in Zelienople Pennsylvania. He received an honorable discharge from the Army in July 1918. Paul James Baum remained associated with the Lawrenceville Bronze Company and was its vice-president through the 1930s. He then became a realtor. Paul James Baum died in 1965. On June 30 1923 Paul James Baum married Helen Louise Kohler b. 1895 the daughter of David Sherman Kohler of the Oliver Iron & Steel Company in Pittsburgh. The Baums lived at 374 Roup Avenue in the Friendship section of Pittsburgh. Before her marriage Helen Louise Kohler Baum taught typing and shorthand at Reno Hall a business school in Pittsburgh. In 1926 she joined the board of directors of the Home for Aged Protestants in Wilkinsburg and was its president from 1945 to 1969. Helen Louise Kohler Baum died on January 21 1977." Since Roup Ave. where they lived intersects Baum Boulevard we may be permitted to speculate that the boulevard was named after a member of Paul Baum's family. The Pittsburgh Board of Trade unknown
