Jomini is considered a father of modern military strategy and was the only author of strategy taught at West Point before the Civil War. Possibly printed in New York in 1809 but the binding style seems distinctly Spanish whereas the typographical font strikes us more as American than Spanish. 8vo full vellum with leather ties 294 pp with 2 pp dedication by the translator to his Spanish-American readers and a 2 pp. afterword Nota del Reimpresor that is also directed toward an American audience. Good copy light usual wear to binding contents a little age toned and blotchy endpapers somewhat wrinkled and worn. Goldsmith gives a scurrilous account of the intrigues chaos and decadence at the Chateau de St. Cloud 5K from Paris where Napoleon made himself Emperor of France in May 1804. The Spanish version was first published in Cadiz in 1806 again in 1808 and there was also an edition published in Mexico in 1808 but those all have publisher information on the title page unlike this edition which might represent a pirated edition of some sort. It is a virulent pamphlet directed against Napoleon himself circulated by one of his best-known opponents: General Jean Sarrazin 1770-1848 who had defected to the enemy on 10 June 1810 having himself conveyed aboard an English brig by a fishing boat from Boulogne. Full red blind-stamped cloth binding smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets gilt initials at the foot of the spine discolouration marks to the spine blue paper endleaves and pastedowns. Foxing. Work illustrated with a portrait of General Kléber as frontispiece. Sentenced to death in absentia by the Lille court-martial on 15 November 1810 Jean Sarrazin was only able to return to France on 23 April 1814 during the First Restoration. This important commission was the joint work of the chaser-founder Thomire awarded a gold medal at the Exhibition of 1806 and the silversmith Odiot. The three plates devoted to it preserve its memory as the ensemble was largely melted down in 1832.The final two plates depict the celebrated cradle of the King of Rome in vermeil mother-of-pearl and burgau shell the fruit of the same two craftsmen which was presented by the City of Paris on 5 March 1811 before the arrival of the imperial child and is now preserved in Vienna.Thomire alone later produced a second example in elm burr and gilt bronze following the same design and faithfully reproducing certain elements such as the two bas-reliefs of the Seine and the Tiber. First version of the Napoleonic Code presented by the four members of Bonaparte's commission appointed to draft the civil code. Also contains the important Preliminary Address to the First Draft of the Civil Code outlining the influences and objectives behind this landmark work - the first modern legal code to be widely adopted in Europe which influenced the codes of jurisdictions all over the world. Under Bonapartes authority the legislative commission led by Tronchet president Portalis Bigot de Préameneu and Maleville completed this draft civil code in just four months presented in Frimaire Year IX of the Republican Calendar January 1801. The structure of the text mirrors that of the Civil Code which came into effect in 21 March 1804. There are however both technical and philosophical differences: this project contains a Preliminary Book On Rights and Laws comprising six titles which would later be reduced in the Code to a single introductory article. Most sections in this version begin with explanatory comments many of which were later removed particularly in the first half of the code. As the Allgemeine Literatur Zeitung observed ""It can often be very useful to consult both the draft and the final code even in matters of legal dogmatics for the general principles and explanations provided by the commission are typically still valid for the code not because they were rejected as incorrect but rather deemed unsuitable for inclusion in the final version"" 25 March 1810. This first version of the Code was published for the Court of Cassation and appellate courts to collect their amendments. Fauvelle printer of this edition likely intended for Parisian magistrates was among the publishers of judicial commentaries submitted in response to the government's request. The courts delivered their remarks within six months of this editions release. After three years of debate and some one hundred sessionshalf chaired by Bonaparte himselfthe Civil Code was adopted in the form of 36 legislative bills and soon became known as the Napoleonic Code. This edition also includes the only appearance at the time of a Preliminary Address in essence the statement of purpose for the draft Civil Code by the four-member governmental commission between August 1800 and January 1801. . The Preliminary Address is in fact the work of Portalis whose spirit of moderation guided the drafters of the code. The legislator must remain modest Portalis maintained: a code should not seek to say everything; it must leave room for interpretation by the courts and jurists which leads to the famous phrase: The codes of nations evolve with time; properly speaking they are not made. The Preliminary Address is also a brilliant piece of propaganda outlining pacification by the Consulate after the Revolution and presenting the future code as a synthesis of the legal tradition from the French monarchy and new revolutionary principles. Barnes spent twelve years in St Helena several of which were as Town Major in Jamestown the Island's capital. During this time he recorded a plethora of miscellaneous observations including the fact that in 1816 there were three breweries on the Island producing "Excellent Beer". He recorded the varieties of fruits fish species and animals and the island's social events. St. Helena still a British territory is in the south Atlantic about 1200 miles west of the coast of SW Africa. It was the site of Napoleon's second exile in 1815. Richardson unknown

Looking for somewhere more than remote than Elba this time he was bound for St. Helena a tiny windswept island in the South Atlantic that was first discovered by the Portuguese and previously in control of the East India Company. <br /> <br /> In the wake of this decision there was much interest in the island and printers scrambled to meet demand. This little pamphlet commences with a history of the island followed by an account of its inhabitants food live stock climate and the all-important garrison. The woodcut includes a key to landmarks on the island. This William Ellery Channing 1782-1842 was the uncle of the more famous American Transcendentalist poet William Ellery Channing II 1817-1901. The elder Channing graduated with distinction from Harvard at the ripe age of 18. His first and only pastoral settlement was a small church on Federal Street in Boston June 1803. Shortly thereafter Channing became closely identified with the intellectual movement that ultimately spawned the North American Review and a number of other journals. Channing gradually grew into a significant opponent of slavery without ever joining forces with the abolitionists or approving of what he deemed their "extremist" tactics. Channing's writings on Bonaparte such as the present title and other political figures earned him a solid literary and critical reputation in Europe as well as America. <br/><br/> Henry Channing hardcover

Lefevre painted a number of portraits of Napoleon the most likely candidate is the one now in the Wellington Collection at Apsley House dated to 1812. The reverse of the handbill has an advert for a letting agency and an advert for an early form of employment agency for servants.
