Moigno born at Guemene-sur-Scorff Morbihan in Brittany a Catholic and physicist and a prolific writer studied at the Jesuit college of Sainte-Anne d'Auray. He made his theological studies at Montrouge devoting his leisure to mathematics and physics in which he achieved much success. At the 1830 Revolution he left for Switzerland studied Hebrew and Arabic then in 1836 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the College of Sainte-Geneviève Rue des Postes in Paris. / Two additional volumes were written in 1882 not present here although this is a beautifully bound set of volumes one through three. The missing volumes are sub-titled: Tome IV: La Foi et la Raison. Tome V: Le miracle du tribunal de la science. "Abbe Moigno'' Les Splendeurs de la Foi Accord Parfait de la Revelation et de la Science de la Foi et de la Raison of 1882 included a collection of information from scientists to support Moigno's thesis that science and Catholicism were compatible" Larson lxvi Other writers according to Larson championed this accord. He was professor of mechanics at the Faculte des Sciences de Paris. He was president of the Society of Incentive for National Industry 1888-1892 and of the Mathematical Society of France 1890 and vice-president of the General Council of Mines 1900-1903. With the Rockwell Kent bookplate of American novelist Katherine Brush 1902 - 1952 and inscribed to her at length on the half-title: "Mrs. Katherine Brush Allow me to send you this little book which belonged to Napoleon III as a remembrance of Rio de Janeiro the gentle town where it never rained during your visit. Spine perished boards detached some spotting and light browning generally at front and back else a very good copy with the stamp of R. F. Pozzolini on half-title. The first edition published the preceding year. Frontispiece portrait folding facsimile showing Napoleon's writing plate of medal struck on Napoleon's marriage. 1 vols. 8vo. Napoleon at St. Helena. Warden was a Surgeon on the Northumberland which conveyed Napoleon to St. Helena. During the voyages and for time at Saint Helena Warden attended Napoleon.¶ The subject matter and criticism of the work sold many editions in the first year. The populace did not like the favorable depiction of Napoleon and the military and literary audience determining that Warden could not have been present at some of the things described took exception to his claims. Warden's French not being strong and his translator the Count de la Cases' English being confused in conveying Napoleon's comments apparently created discrepancies in the conversations as Napoleon later said that his conversations with Warden were quite different. Some splitting along the joints making the boards a bit wobbly but binding still quite sound. According to The Cambridge Modern History although these letters purported to be written by an Englishman they were actually translated from the French and "the original draft was secretly dictated by Napoleon to Las Cases. They were designed to impress the British public with the sufferings of the exiles and to furnish a defence to those episodes in Napoleon's career which had proved most repugnant to British opinion-- the execution of the Duc d'Enghein the death of Captain Wright the treatment of the Spanish Bourbons and the return from Elba.
