Looking for somewhere more than remote than Elba this time he was bound for St. Helena a tiny windswept island in the South Atlantic that was first discovered by the Portuguese and previously in control of the East India Company. <br/><br/>In the wake of this decision there was much interest in the island and printers scrambled to meet demand. This little pamphlet commences with a history of the island followed by an account of its inhabitants food live stock climate and the all-important garrison. The woodcut includes a key to landmarks on the island. Of additional interest are the "Remarks on Ascension Island" being another British possession in the Atlantic.<br/><br/>Not in OCLC not in COPAC. This copy only on ABPC. J. Brown unknown books

N.p. "22 dimanche" 1849. Brett's reply dated Paris April 30 1849. 2pp. 210 x 135 mm. Small hole where seal was broken light soiling along folds. Provenance: Latimer Clark.</p> <p>The Abbé Moigno an eminent mathematician physicist and science writer authored several works on telegraphy. His correspondent John Brett laid the first submarine telegraph cable between England and France in 1850 and was one of the founders of the Atlantic Telegraph Company. Moigno's letter to Brett written the year before Brett laid his first submarine cable asks Brett for news of his current researches "N'avez-vous rien de nouveau à m'apprendre Quand ferez-vous une nouvelle expérience" and asks Brett to supply him with an electric battery for a M. Soleil "M. Soleil n'ose pas me dire qu'il a absolument besoin de la pile mais je m'en aperçois chaque jour. Pourriez vous fixer à peu près l'époque à laquelle vous pourrez la rendre". First edition. The Code de Procedure Civile was issued two years after the publication of the Code Civil Code Napoleon. It is one of the main components of the legal system established during the Empire. The Table Alphabetique et Raisonnee is a companion index volume. The annotations in our copy date from 1810 to 1820. This period coincides with the career of Eugene Marie Bonaventure Lucas de Peslouan an attorney from a notable Breton family that produced several generations of lawyers and notaries. His annotations which range in length from phrases to several sentences are notably meticulous. They comment on the articles give clarifications pose procedural questions and refer often to laws from the Revolutionary period and early years of the Empire. Several notes are cross-references and there are a number of comments in question-and-answer form. For example in the section "Proceedings Before the Courts" "The claims directed against undivided successions in the national domain do they fall under judicial or administrative jurisdiction "Answer: "They must be prosecuted administratively=Court of Appeal of Paris. unknown books

One page. Folio. Handsome document signed by the gallant and flamboyant brother-in-law of Napoleon. Murat was one of Napoleon's boldest marshals who played a prominent role in each of the major campaigns; nonetheless at the time this document was signed Murat was negotiating with the Allies and eventually agreed to provide troops to fight against France in exchange for a guarantee of his throne and possessions. Ultimately however after Waterloo he was captured by the Allies executed and shot. It is said that as he faced the firing squad he shouted:<br/><br/><br/><br/> "Soldiers do your duty! Straight to the heart - but spare the face. Fire!"<br/><br/><br/><br/>"Murat was one of the most colorful figures of his time. His military talents on the battlefield at the head of the cavalry were considerable but his rash initiatives robbed him of any chance of earning repute as a strategist. A vain and rather brainless man given to devising splendid uniforms he had many enemies among the marshalate but was greatly admired by the rank and file for his dash and undoubted charisma ." Francois Marquis de Chasseloup-Laubat 1754-1833 was a French general who fought in the French Revolution and was chief of engineers in the army of Italy under Napoleon. He led the seiges of Maastricht Milan and Mantua. He reconstructed the defences of northern Italy during the peace of 1800-1805 during which time he constructed the great fortress of Alessandria on the Tanaro. He then served in the Polish and German campaigns where he directed the siege of Danzig and reconstructed many fortresses. Napoleon praised Chasseloup as one of his best generals.<br/>The detailed plates at the end of the work give plans for cannon and fortifications as well as designs for a portable bridge a well a sawmill and other instruments of war. <br/>Scarce; OCLC locates only 5 copies. Moigno born at Guemene-sur-Scorff Morbihan in Brittany a Catholic and physicist and a prolific writer studied at the Jesuit college of Sainte-Anne d'Auray. He made his theological studies at Montrouge devoting his leisure to mathematics and physics in which he achieved much success. At the 1830 Revolution he left for Switzerland studied Hebrew and Arabic then in 1836 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the College of Sainte-Geneviève Rue des Postes in Paris. / Two additional volumes were written in 1882 not present here although this is a beautifully bound set of volumes one through three. The missing volumes are sub-titled: Tome IV: La Foi et la Raison. Tome V: Le miracle du tribunal de la science. "Abbe Moigno'' Les Splendeurs de la Foi Accord Parfait de la Revelation et de la Science de la Foi et de la Raison of 1882 included a collection of information from scientists to support Moigno's thesis that science and Catholicism were compatible" Larson lxvi Other writers according to Larson championed this accord. An extraordinary letter of historic significance written a mere two days after the Treaty of Fontainebleau of April 11 1814 which set the terms of Napoleon's abdication and ended an era. Dupont had been one of Napoleon's most distinguished generals but his surrender in the disastrous Spanish campaign led to disgrace and imprisonment. After the fall of Napoléon Dupont became Minister of War for Louis XVIII and in just such letters as this to Marshal Victor - one of Napoleon's most trusted generals - negotiated the acquiescence of Napoléon's military leaders: in translation "Monsieur le Maréchal; - The provisional government has read with intense interest the declaration in which your Excellency has announced his adherence to the act of the Senate pronouncing the abdication of Napoleon Buonaparte and the restoration of the Bourbons on the throne on their ancestors. By this declaration taken in the interest of the country your Excellency has established anew a claim to the gratitude of the French people as well as the respect and good will of His Majesty Louis XVIII. According to The Cambridge Modern History although these letters purported to be written by an Englishman they were actually translated from the French and "the original draft was secretly dictated by Napoleon to Las Cases. They were designed to impress the British public with the sufferings of the exiles and to furnish a defence to those episodes in Napoleon's career which had proved most repugnant to British opinion-- the execution of the Duc d'Enghein the death of Captain Wright the treatment of the Spanish Bourbons and the return from Elba.
