First and only edition of this volume in Collas's monumental historical survey of European medals seals and cameos the plates produced by his patented engraving process. The present volume dedicated to portraying the career of Napoleon through medals. Collas's device could trace the surface of a medal reproducing its contours with startling visual accuracy in two dimensions graving lines down to 200 per inch. Originally issued in four-page parts each accompanied by a single plate the Trésor de numismatique et de glyptique ran for 24 years building to 20 volumes and reproducing some 15000 items in all. Folio 415 x 280 mm. With 72 plates on thick wove paper finely engraved using Collas's anaglyptographic process. Contemporary very dark greenish blue morocco-grain half roan spine gilt lettered direct low flat bands with gilt rules blind panels to compartments Gloster pattern marbled boards and edges double gilt rules to spine and corner edges light greenish yellow surface-paper endpapers. Binding with colour neatly retouched in places a little rubbing to extremities small patch of adhesion damage to the gutter at the front endpapers minor loss; some foxing to the text as usual heavier toward the front the plates typically less affected but with some largely marginal foxing throughout but the first and last few plates more generally remains very good. hardcover

Small 8vo 6.6 x 4 inches original binding gone now in modern wraps with spine label contents good but lacking the sought-after colored frontispiece; old inscription on title page contents otherwise good to very good a few small pencil/pen marks to text or margins lightest foxing small chip to margin of one page. Very rare in the trade and few also at auction; a copy sold for 350 Pounds at a Forum auction in 2017 with frontispiece. Barnes spent twelve years in St Helena several of which were as Town Major in Jamestown the Island's capital. During this time he recorded a plethora of miscellaneous observations including the fact that in 1816 there were three breweries on the Island producing "Excellent Beer". He recorded the varieties of fruits fish species and animals and the island's social events. St. Helena still a British territory is in the south Atlantic about 1200 miles west of the coast of SW Africa. It was the site of Napoleon's second exile in 1815. Richardson unknown

18102472226/10/1810. <p>In 1808 Napoleon formed the idea of having a traveling library in order to make his hours of intellectual recreation independent of the exigencies of a campaign or the delays of a courier. More importantly during times of battle he ordered books that taught him the topography of the countries he was invading and gave him other information to help toward victory. Obviously such a collection of books would have to be selected with great care that the library might be a portable one; and consequently the minute instructions as to its care are as it were a picture of his mind.</p><p>To create this library he turned principally to three men.</p><p>Abbe Denina: In 1782 he had served as historian under Frederick the Great; he became under Napoleon the imperial librarian.</p><p>Antoine-Alexandre Barbier: It was in 1808 that he was put in charge of Napoleon's personal libraries at Compiègne Rambouillet and Trianon and given the primary role in managing the travel libraries that Napoleon took with him whilst on campaign. Barbier was also expected to keep the French Emperor constantly supplied with reading material along with reports analyses and commentaries regarding each publication.</p><p><img class=""alignnone size-post-window wp-image-29132"" src=""https://cdn.raabcollection.com/wp-content/uploads/20231204110006/nt-1600x677.jpg"" alt="""" width=""1600"" height=""677"" /></p><p>Jacob Desmalter: He was responsible for the creation of the library itself the boxes into which the books went along with the decorations worthy of an imperial library.</p><p>This is the first known travel library of a head of state and general. Napoleon seems to have looked forward with expectation to the use of this traveling library while in the field; and when he was preparing for the great campaign which culminated at Wagram he wrote somewhat impatiently from Malmaison March 20 1809 through Méneval his private secretary “The Emperor wants to know if his traveling library is ready. I advised M. Barbier to choose it with care and to put some excellent books in it.†Then the secretary adds: “His Majesty wishes to have something very distinguished and has a preference for books characterized by the beauty of the printed page and by elegance of binding.†Finally comes the admonition “If you have not found the epics do not lose a moment of time in getting them.â€</p><p>His first portable library was ordered in 1808 and reached him in 1809 but was soon replaced by one that suited his interests more and that would last him longer. In replacing the 1809 delivery a second mahogany library of 6 boxes was ordered from Desmalter along with two of oak lined with blue silk. The cost from Desmalter was 1982 francs. These were likely used by Napoleon for the first time in 1810 during visits to Normandy and Holland.</p><p>As tensions with Russia heated however Napoleon supplemented this portable library with books on Russian geography and topography to prepare for his Russian invasion.</p><p>The fate of this traveling library was the fate of his entire army of 1812: it was lost. One of the principal plates from Adam's suite documenting the exhumation return and state funeral of Napoleon in 1840. The plate forms part of Victor Adam's 'Retour en France des Depouilles Mortelles de Napoleon' and was part of a suite of 20 plates. The scene depicts the official opening of the coffin on St Helena on 15 October 1840 prior to the removal of the remains to France. Napoleon lies in uniform within the opened coffin surrounded by French officers and clergy; British guards are visible beyond the tent. The plate emphasises the reported preservation and recognisability of the body a detail heavily publicised during the Retour des Cendres and central to its political symbolism under Louis-Philippe. 18042327822/08/1804. <blockquote><p>This is earliest document we found having reached the market bearing the title ""Napoleon I"" Emperor of the French on it; it was signed just weeks after he gave himself the title and months before his coronation in front of the Pope.</p></blockquote><div dir=""ltr""><span style=""color: #3366ff;""> </span></div><p><span style=""color: #3366ff;""><em>Reference for research publication and institutions: Raab B</em>13.105</span></p><p>The Corsican-born Napoleon one of the greatest military strategists in history rapidly rose in the ranks of the French Revolutionary Army during the late 1790s. By 1799 France was at war with most of Europe and Napoleon returned home from his Egyptian campaign to take over the reigns of the French government and save his nation from collapse. After becoming first consul in February 1800 he reorganized his armies and defeated Austria. In 1802 he established the Napoleonic Code a new system of French law and in 1804 he established the French empire.</p><p>On May 18 1804 Napoleon proclaimed himself emperor and made Josephine Empress. His coronation ceremony took place on December 2 1804 in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris with incredible splendor and at considerable expense. Napoleon even paid for Pope Pius VII who had signed the Concordat of Rome defining the status of the Roman Catholic Church in France and ending the breach caused by the church reforms and confiscations enacted during the French Revolution to travel to France for the occasion believing that his presence would imbue the event with a solemn religious feeling. Pius agreed to come hoping to win Napoleon's goodwill towards Rome and the Papal States.</p><p>As a perfect reflection of the time in which he lived Napoleon was “obsessed with history."" He would draw references symbols and examples from it to justify his position and his politics and thus give his reign its place in the history of France from the Gauls right up to his immediate predecessors including the Bourbons. Of all the references wielded by the French Emperor Charlemagne is if not one of the most important then at least one of the most consistent. During the same period the Russian Ambassador Markov wrote to his government saying that in his opinion Bonaparte would soon take the title of “Emperor of the Gauls †whilst the Prussian Lucchesini sent word to Berlin that the Consul wanted to “be a second Charlemagne †but “enlightened by the geniuses of our century †adding “No-one doubts he has a plan; it is just the timing that has yet to be decided."" On becoming emperor Napoleon thought it time to visit his “predecessor â€. This pilgrimage had become virtually a tradition with the kings of France then the Germanic emperors. So he went to Aix-la-Chapelle to tie his historical legitimacy with the memory of Charlemagne – as Thiers put it the old emperor had been “awakened by Napoleon with ill-disguised intent â€.</p><p>On July 18 the new Emperor began a great inspection tour from Boulogne to Treves through Calais Dunkirk Ostend Arras Mons Aachen Cologne and Mainz. It was to end in Aix and cement his position of Emperor. He would return from this and receive the crown.</p><p><strong>Autograph document signed</strong> with a very early example of his new title the head reading <em>""To his Majesty the Emperor of the French Napoleon I""</em> August 22 1804 Ostend granting a senior civil position to a resident of Ostend on his great tour by endorsing the request <em>""Agreed. Returned to the Ministry of Finance Ostend 6 Thermidor in the 12th August 22 1804.â€</em> The approval its in response to an appeal from citizen Michel Jean Pruyssenaere resident of Ostende to serve as collector of that area.</p><p>We have found just one other document of Napoleon during this grand tour having reached the public market and that was part of the great Sang Collection. That did not have his new letterhead as Emperor.
