Randolph 1892-1980 was a folklore specialist of the Ozarks who first began publishing on Ozark superstitions and dialect in 1927 and followed by decades of work including his later work on “Kate Bender The Kansas Murderess†published under the Allison Hardy pseudonym. First edition of this anthology of humorous African-American folklore jokes some minstrel routines along with selections from W.E.B. Dubois Langston Hughes David Ross Locke George Schuyler Dick Gregory Ossie Davis and others. Sterling 1907-1989 was the author of Rachel Carson’s juvenile biography Sea and Earth 1970 and active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. Harrington 1912-1995 was considered by Langston Hughes to be America’s greatest African-American cartoonist and vociferous advocate for Civil Rights and opponent of racism. Some pamphlets a little nicked and soiled to protruding fore-edges. Binding a little rubbed to extremities. Ink ownership stamps of James A. Stephen to flyleaf presentation inscription to third pamphlet: ‘J.A. Stephen from D.R.’ A sammelband of pamphlets assembled by Aberdonian doctor James Stephen with an emphasis on folkloric material and featuring many pieces by his fellow Aberdonian doctor the folklorist Dr. David Rorie. Although uncredited Rorie is probably the author of the pamphlet on the songs and names of the Garioch Medical Association a body he joined in 1905 and most likely the D.R. who has inscribed it making it a presentation copy. Robinson's artwork is quite colorful and appealing the cover art is softer and more pastel and I am guessing that Robinson was an in-house illustrator for The Children's Companion but I find no listing of him/her in the DICTIONARY OF 20TH CENTURY BRITISH ILLUSTRATORS.
