1906HCA-5042Philadelphia PA: Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania 1906. 352 pp. purple cloth w/ gold lettering to spine & gold decoration to front board top edges gilt ; Book shows some fading to spine w/ fairly light wear to ends; similar wear to corners of boards a bit heavier to bottom corners w/ some worn spots to edges as well; front board shows a little fading to top 3/4" w/ slight fading along spine & bottom edge as well as a small water spot & a few scrapes & other blemishes; rear board shows slight fading to top 2" as well as a number of small scuffs or scrapes & a small spot worn through at fore edge; front free endpaper shows a small brown spot carried through from other side w/ creases to bottom corner & a few extremely short tears to fore edge - following page shows the same brown stain w/ the same creasing but lighter w/ binding cracking at gutter between this page and half-title; half-title has a faint version of the brown spot & has the limitation number penciled in under the text; rear interior hinge beginning to crack; tissue guard for one plate was folded & is now creased / Label glued to front pastedown states: "With the fraternal compliments of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania F. & A. M. George W. Kendrick Jr. Grand Master November A. D. 1906 A. L. 5906." Prince Hall Freemasonry Programs Documenting African American Fraternal Leadership in Oregon 1958-1977

Archive of Prince Hall Freemasonry souvenir programs documenting African American fraternal organization networks and civic leadership in Portland Oregon during the mid- to late twentieth century. The material consists of official annual communication programs issued by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Oregon documenting Black fraternal governance mutual aid ceremonial leadership and community organization through structured leadership hierarchies public ceremonies youth initiatives scholarship programs and affiliated women's organizations. The archive provides evidence for the study of African American civic institutions in the Pacific Northwest particularly within Oregon where exclusionary racial laws and a comparatively small Black population historically limited the development of Black organizational infrastructure. Archive consists of three illustrated souvenir programs issued by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Portland Oregon in 1958 1973 and 1977. Programs measure between approximately 6 x 9 inches and 8.5 x 11 inches and range from 44 to 73 pages. Staple-bound in illustrated wrappers each volume contains numerous black-and-white photographic portraits of lodge officers affiliated members and organizational leadership. The programs document annual communications in which Masonic leadership convened to establish organizational priorities and reaffirm community initiatives. Several full-page portraits depict high-ranking officials in formal Masonic regalia including William B. Odom Jr. identified as "Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Oregon F. & A.M. Inc." Additional material includes photographs and addresses by Thomas R. Vickers whose remarks in the 1977 program emphasize anti-crime efforts youth mentorship scholarship support and civic engagement. Prince Hall Freemasonry materials 1940s to 1990s document the institutional life leadership structures and community functions of one of the most significant African American fraternal organizations in the United States and provide direct evidence of how lodges operated as centers of social civic and religious life across multiple decades. Founded in 1784 in response to racial exclusion from mainstream Masonic bodies Prince Hall lodges sustained networks of mutual aid education and leadership within Black communities. This archive records both formal lodge activity and personal commemorative practices supporting research into African American history fraternal organizations and the continuity of Black institutional life from the mid twentieth century through the post civil rights era. Seven items including three silver gelatin press photographs one yearbook two funeral programs and one membership roster originating from Pennsylvania Louisiana and Illinois. The photographs measuring approximately 8.5 x 11 inches and dating from the 1940s to 1960s depict lodge events and gatherings including a 1946 banquet of Golden Shield Lodge No. 69 in Pittsburgh with members and guests seated beneath a lodge banner and a 1969 image from the annual workshop of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Louisiana in New Orleans identifying members W. S. Finister Jr. Rufus Mayfield and Richard Turnley. The Golden Star Lodge No. 143 Yearbook. Pittsburgh 1969 includes membership rosters meeting schedules and lodge principles with cover imagery of the Masonic square and compass and printed meeting location at 143 Orr Street. Two funeral programs dated 1993 document services for Sister Mattie White at Central Baptist Church in Pittsburgh and John Columbus Coger at New Hope Temple Baptist Church in Philadelphia reflecting ceremonial practices and affiliations including possible connections to auxiliary organizations such as the Order of the Eastern Star.
