Fair to good only. FIRST EDITIONS. Each pamphlet contains the annual address of the Grand Master committee reports notes on new charters lists of suspensions and expulsions memorials to deceased members financial reports records of the meetings of member lodges and correspondence with other lodges in the U.S. Canada England and Scotland. There are frequent notices of the Grand Lodges participation in civic ceremonies and the dedication of monuments. There are also discussions of relief work by the Freemasons including aid to the Louisiana victims of the great Mississippi flood of 1874 and assistance with recovery from the Charleston earthquake of 1886. Many prominent South Carolinians belonged to the Grand Lodge and the present reports contain addresses or communications by Joseph B. Kershaw G.M. 1873-1874 a former Confederate general and future judge of the Circuit Court; Wilmot Gibbes De Saussure G.M. 1875-1877 a former Confederate general state representative lawyer and historian; and James Adger Smyth G.M. 1884-1887 who became mayor of Charleston 1895-1903. OCLC locates several institutions with holdings of the serial but only U.S.C. has all seven of the present reports. The only other copies of these imprints found are at Duke 1875 1888 and 1891; N.Y. State Library 1875; and S.C. State Library 1902. Turnbull locates none of the present reports. � paperback

Final leaf detached otherwise minimal internal wear. A detailed and long-running record of minutes for the Henderson Yoakum chapter of Freemasons which covers well over thirty years of the group's history. This chapter was located in the small east Texas town of Moscow south of Lufkin whose population was 228 in 1880 according to the census. These entries document the formation of the chapter record votes on members with a count of white and black balls cast bylaws design of a chapter seal announcements of deaths of members foundation of a Masonic school in town and much other chapter business. The book also includes proceedings of trials against members including one on May 27 1860 at which "It was decided that accused was guilty of gross unmasonic conduct by 6 black ball to three white." The entries are interrupted after the meeting on October 20 1860 at which a committee was appointed "To report on the propriety of withdrawing or seceding from the Grand Chapter of the United States." On August 19 1865 after the close of the Civil War the entries resume. An alphabetical index of subjects occupies the initial leaves. The namesake of the masonic chapter Henderson King Yoakum was a soldier politician and author whose 1855 History of Texas was described by John Jenkins as "The first scholarly history of Texas written after annexation." He was a close friend of Sam Houston and a founding member of the chapter that adopted his named. Laid into this record book is a carbon copy of a letter to the son of Texas Governor William P. Hobby remarking that his grandfather Edwin Hobby was a member of the Henderson Yoakum chapter as well as three additional pieces of later Texas masonic ephemera. Also notable is the bookseller's label on the front pastedown denoting that the blank book used to record these minutes was obtained from Henry Hinck Bookseller & Stationer Galveston Tx. A fine document of masonic participation in rural Texas in the second half of the 19th century. unknown

Two horizontal folds very short split at edge of one fold no text loss. Very attractive and Very Good.<br /> <br /> Several members had served in the Confederate Army. E.C. Carroll was an owner of the Vicksburg Sentinel and the President of the Board of Directors of the Merchant's National Bank in Vicksburg. Frederic Speed was an officer of this Lodge. and an Honorary 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was involved in the great explosion of the ship Sultana at the end of the Civil War which resulted in the deaths of over 1700 Union prisoners of war. The steamship had been overloaded to several times the ship's capacity in an effort to make as much money as possible from the $5 per prisoner rate paid by the government. Speed was indicted and found guilty; the verdict was reversed by Brig. Gen. Joseph Holt on the ground that Speed's involvement was remote. <br /> Officers listed: Sir Wm. A. Fairchild P.E.C. Also included are records of correspondence sent and received receipts for fees due and paid and vote tallies as well as the names and addresses of what may be lodge members and visitors with a number of those being from American cities. 12.75'' x 9''.
