On offer is a printed Roman Catholic pastoral letter dated 1849 and intended as an open letter to clergy and members of the church in the jurisdiction. Its author was Jacques-Marie Antoine Célestin Dupont the Cardinal Archbishop of the Diocese of Bourges France. Dupont was born in 1792 in Sardinia. He was ordained a priest in 1815. In 1823 he was appointed Bishop and over the next 36 years served in several dioceses. His various postings were not without controversy. He was a reformer sent into several large dioceses to bring about much-needed changes and this frequently did not sit well with local clergy or the people of the diocese. In 1847 he was made a Cardinal. He maintained close relationships with the court of Louis Phillippe the so-called July Monarchy. Dupont passed away in 1859 in Bourges France. He begins his long letter with this exhortation: La belle recommendation nos tres-chers freres que celle de l'apotre St. Pierre exhortant les fideles a rendre leurs ames chastes par obeissance toute fraternelle en s'appliquent avec plus de soin a s'aimer les uns les autres d'un coeur simple et sans defiance. Translation: The beautiful recommendation our dearest brothers that the apostle St. Peter exhort the faithful to make their souls chaste by fraternal obedience apply themselves with more care to love each other with a simple heart and without hesitation. The front cover carries the coat of arms of Cardinal Du Pont. The letter is issued over his printed signature and sealed with his coat of arms. It also bears the printed signature of his secretary Jean Figier. This document offers a valuable insight into the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church in mid-19th century Europe. Pastoral letters such as this one were frequently sent out at particular times of the year coinciding with ecclesiastical seasons such as Lent or Christmas. However they were not limited to any particular event or celebration. In this case this Pastoral Letter was published for the Lenten season of 1849 the 40 day. Period preceding Easter. The document measures 10.75 inches by 8.5 inches. It is a 16-page printed document. The binding is a simple threaded binding that is intact and in good condition. On offer is a printed pastoral letter about the education of young children written by the Archbishop of the Diocese of Bourges Jean-Joseph Marchal. The letter is titled lEducation des Petits Enfants et Mandement Pour le SaintTemps de Careme de l'An de Grace 1887 The Education of Small Children and the Mandata for theholy season of Lent in the Year of Grace 1887. Pastoral letters are open letters written to clergy and often to all members of the church as this one was in a particular jurisdiction. Such letters were frequently sent out at particular times of the year coinciding with ecclesiastical seasons such as Lent or Christmas. In this particular case it was sent out as part of the preparations for Lent. As the title suggest this Letter concerned the education of children. Two excerpts from the letter follow: L'enfant meme quand il a ete regenere par la baptisme ne se developee pas et ne devient points un homme parfait un chretien parfait par un accroissement spontane par la vertu d'unee force inherente a sa nature et agissant selon des regles invariables et toujours sures. Translation: The child even when he has been regenerated by baptism does not develop and does not become a perfect man a perfect Christian by a spontaneous increase by virtue of a force inherent in his nature and acting according to rules that are unvarying and always certain. Cedependant il faut bien de reconnaitre dans le grande nombre de familles il est impossible ou du moins il est dificile pour les parents de donner completement et par eux-memes a leur enfants l'ensignement religieux qui leur est du des qu'ils ont l'usage de la raison Translation: However it is necessary to recognize in the large number of families it is impossible or at least it is difficult for the parents to give completely and by themselves to their children the religious teaching which is due to them as soon as they have the use of reason. The author Archbishop of the Diocese of Bourges Jean-Joseph Marchal was ordained a priest in 1845 and taught as a professor at a major seminary. Leaving his teaching position became a parish priest. In 1864 he was appointedBishop of Belley France. In 1880 he was appointed Archbishop of Bourges in the southwest of France. He remained there as Archbishop until his death in 1892. Interestingly his brother was also a Bishop and served as his assistant in Bourges. For a historian or an educator this document offers an excellent window into the attitudes toward children and their education in a fairly conservative region of France during the Belle Epoque period of the late 19th century. This printed document measures 10.5 inches by 8.5 inches and contains 28 pages. The sewn binding is in excellent condition as are the pages. Bishop Potter writes to a Mr. Lloyd regarding dividends on 2 insurance policies. Signed "H. C. Potter". Folded vertically down the center else fine. <p>The address 96th Fourth Avenue was the location of Grace Church School and the Church houses.<p>Henry C. Potter 1835-1908 was the seventh Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. In 1892 during his administration the cornerstone of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was laid. Potter was notable for his interest in social reform and politics. While he was rector of Grace Church New York 1868-1884 he worked to inaugurate working men's clubs day nurseries and kindergartens and long after he became bishop he continued to take part in the summer work of missions on the east side of New York City. A judicious and finely argued study of Joan of Arc in which the author weighs her mystical visions and martial achievements against the competing interpretations of rationalist scepticism and traditional Catholic hagiography. Drawing upon the original trial proceedings contemporary eyewitness accounts of the relief of Orléans 1429 and the later rehabilitation documents of 1456 the work challenges theories of hysteria epilepsy and political manipulation. Particular emphasis is placed upon Joan's prophetic accuracy notably the crowning of Charles VII; her remarkable leadership in the field despite illiteracy and the theological acumen displayed during her trial at Rouen all adduced as evidence of a character transcending a naturalist explanation. 88 pages. 23cm x 14cm. BOUND WITH a work presumably by Plum entitled "Anmerkninger of Exkurser" oddly paginated by letter and number through "l". The main work appears to be an extended preface and commentary on Palingenius' famous "Zodiacus Vitae". It is published for the 300th Jubilee Fest of the Reformation proceeds to go to FyensStiftsbibliothek which Plum founded. Paingenius' banned pseudonymous book Zodiacus vitae 1543 is a Latin poem divided into 12 books one for each sign of the zodiac. The didactic poem addresses the subject of human happiness in connection with scientific knowledge and combines metaphysical speculation with satirical attacks on ecclesiastical hypocrisy. It was banned by the Catholic Church in 1559 and its author's bones burned for heresy. This made the book extremely popular among protestants and particularly in England where it was an influence on William Shakespeare especially in the Seven ages of man speech from As You Like It. The book is dedicated to Prince Christian Frederik of Denmark who had just 3 years before the publication of Bishop Plum's work called and presided over the Constituent Assembly of 1814 at Eidsvoll at which the constitution for an independent Norway was founded. In 1896 he founded the Merrymount Press. . Updike was greatly interested in the history of printing types and in 1922 published Printing Types: Their History Forms and Use.
