Tipped in on the second blank leaf following the front endpapers is a portrait of Onderdonk engraved by W.L. Ormsby from a photograph by Brady. Tipped in on 2 blank pages following the text is a report of Bishop Onderdonk's funeral in 1861. Having been convicted of 6 counts of lewdness based on the testimony of various women who had rejected his advances the bishop had been suspended from his post. The author of the account of his funeral viewed him as "an innocent person visited with the severest punishment." Gift inscription at head of title page: "For John McKeon Esq with cmplnts of David Graham." Added to that an inscription indicating that it had been purchased at the sale of A. Oakey Hall's estate. Tipped in on the first blank leaf following the front endpapers is an autograph letter from David Graham to A. Oakey Hall esq. about another case. Inscriptions in pencil on the front free endpaper indicate that David Graham was the counsel for Onderdonk's defense; at foot of the page: "The Episcopal Church Bishop Richter." David Graham 1808-1852 was an English lawyer who spent part of his career in the United States. John McKeon 1808-1883 was an American lawyer who served as New York County district attorney from 1846 to 1850. Abraham Oakey Hall 1826-1898 was an American lawyer who served as mayor of New York City from 1869 to 1872. Herbert Boyce Satcher was the vicar of St. Aidan's Parish in Cheltenham Pa. from 1924 to 1958. Heraldic Genealogical and Antiquarian Books and Manuscripts which belonged to the Late ALEXANDER SINCLAIR ESQ. and now deposited in the Library at Crawford Priory Fife N.B." Below the label is the signature of Robert Pitcairn W.S. July 27 1838. Robert Pitcairn 1793-1855 was a writer to the signet and in 1833 published a three volume set titled "Trials and Other Proceedings in Matters Criminal Before the High Court of Justice in Scotland" which Sir Walter Scott latched onto. After Scott read one of the narratives in Pitcairn's 'Criminal Trials' he was inspired to write his 'Ayrshire Tragedy'. The two remained friends with Scott reviewing an early portion of the set in the 'Quarterly Review' for 1831. The National Library of Scotland holds 10 Letters from Sir Walter Scott addressed to Robert Pitcairn W.S. Pitcairn was also a member of of the Society of Antiquaries in Scotland and part of the group around James Maidment in the Bannatyne Club. There is also a small book label for A.B.W. MacEwen of Maine a Scottish medieval genealogist. He also researched the genealogy of the families of Prince Edward Island for which he received an Award. He published widely in American and British journals of history and genealogy considered the greatest scholar of medieval Scottish genealogy and was bestowed with an honorary membership in The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy. 8 xlviii 4 xxiv 476pp xl printed on heavy laid paper deckled page edges bound in half cloth and paper over boards with the paper spine label intact binding and hinges tight occasional pencil annotations with plates throughout and a double page map in back. BOUND WITH a work presumably by Plum entitled "Anmerkninger of Exkurser" oddly paginated by letter and number through "l". The main work appears to be an extended preface and commentary on Palingenius' famous "Zodiacus Vitae". It is published for the 300th Jubilee Fest of the Reformation proceeds to go to FyensStiftsbibliothek which Plum founded. Paingenius' banned pseudonymous book Zodiacus vitae 1543 is a Latin poem divided into 12 books one for each sign of the zodiac. The didactic poem addresses the subject of human happiness in connection with scientific knowledge and combines metaphysical speculation with satirical attacks on ecclesiastical hypocrisy. It was banned by the Catholic Church in 1559 and its author's bones burned for heresy. This made the book extremely popular among protestants and particularly in England where it was an influence on William Shakespeare especially in the Seven ages of man speech from As You Like It. The book is dedicated to Prince Christian Frederik of Denmark who had just 3 years before the publication of Bishop Plum's work called and presided over the Constituent Assembly of 1814 at Eidsvoll at which the constitution for an independent Norway was founded. A judicious and finely argued study of Joan of Arc in which the author weighs her mystical visions and martial achievements against the competing interpretations of rationalist scepticism and traditional Catholic hagiography. Drawing upon the original trial proceedings contemporary eyewitness accounts of the relief of Orléans 1429 and the later rehabilitation documents of 1456 the work challenges theories of hysteria epilepsy and political manipulation. Particular emphasis is placed upon Joan's prophetic accuracy notably the crowning of Charles VII; her remarkable leadership in the field despite illiteracy and the theological acumen displayed during her trial at Rouen all adduced as evidence of a character transcending a naturalist explanation. 88 pages. 23cm x 14cm.
