1797FGN12-C-11Paris: Journal du Commerce 1797. First edition. Hardback. Good. 8" by 5". None. A very scarce French first edition of this work on the issue of the union of Belgium and France. Written by French politician and lawyer Phillipe-Antoine Merlin de Douai the essay is an interesting document of the French Revolution and the abrupt change in political discourse in both domestic and foreign matters. Merlin was himself a revolutionary but did not advocate violence in the same manner as many of his contemporaries although he did vote for the execution of King Louis XVI. He was later banished among many others in the Second Bourbon Restoration. In paper covered boards. Externally sound though with tender joints and hinges and wear to extremities and backstrip. Internally the pages are firmly bound but are foxed and faded throughout. Good Journal du Commerce hardcover

Imprimerie Nationale Paris 1795 12 x 19.50 cm broché First edition of this speech delivered by Philippe-Antoine Merlin elected representative from Douai to the National Convention assembly. Handsome copy presented in its original wrappers of this report made the day after the royalist insurrection and which names the generals who crushed it with in first place the people's representative Barras designated general-in-chief of the army of the interior while omitting and ignoring any mention of Bonaparte. The role of Bonaparte soon nicknamed ""General Vendémiaire"" would only be recognized later in a report of 30 Vendémiaire by Barras himself who attributed all the merits of suppressing the uprising to himself and who cited ""Buonaparte"" only as ""second in command"". Half leather: lightbrown calf spine nicely gilt in compartments spine with ribbons and with 2 morocco title-labels; covers with marbled paper. Edges painted red marbled endpapers. Corners sl. bumped with minimal traces. - Attractive copy with 23 pamphlets almost all in fine condition only a few leaves waterstained or browned and very few brown spots in places. Only no 23 in bad condition. - Nice and interesting collection about the French nobility in relation to the Revolutionary ideas. - Some of the brochures are extremely rare.
