In Couture Culture Nancy Troy offers a new model of how art and fashion were linked in the early twentieth century. Focusing on a leader of the French fashion industry Paul Poiret Troy uncovers a logic of fashion based on the tension between originality and reproduction that bears directly on art historical issues of the period. This tension lies at the heart of haute couture which although designed for the wealthy was also intended to be adapted for sale in department stores and other clothing outlets that catered to a broader consumer market. Troy examines the relationships between elite and popular culture the professional theater and the fashion show as well as the presumed polarity between Orientalist and classical sensibilities. She shows how Poiret and other designers patronized the arts and presented themselves as artists not only to sell their individual dresses to wealthy clients but also to promote the mass production of their designs. The contradictions she uncovers suggest surprising parallels with the readymades and fashion-related work of Marcel Duchamp who explored the questions of originality and authenticity raised by couture culture during the 1910s and 1920s.--Amazon. 2013207326Chicago: University of Chicago Press 2013. Hardcover. NF. Octavo. Hardcover. Bound in yellow cloth wiith illustrated jacket. xi 285 pages : illustrations ; 26 cm. "Dutch painter Piet Mondrian died in New York City in 1944 but his work and legacy have been far from static since then. From market pressures to personal relationships and scholarly agendas posthumous factors have repeatedly transformed our understanding of his oeuvre. In The Afterlife of Piet Mondrian Nancy J. Troy explores the controversial circumstances under which our conception of the artist's work has been shaped since his death an account that describes money-driven interventions and personal and professional rivalries in forthright detail. Troy reveals how collectors curators scholars dealers and the painter's heirs all played roles in fashioning Mondrian's legacy each with a different reason for seeing the artist through a particular lens. She shows that our appreciation of his work is influenced by how it has been conserved copied displayed and publicized and she looks at the popular appeal of Mondrian's instantly recognizable style in fashion graphic design and a vast array of consumer commodities. Ultimately Troy argues that we miss the evolving significance of Mondrian's work if we examine it without regard for the interplay of canonical art and popular culture. A fascinating investigation into Mondrian's afterlife this book casts new light on how every artist's legacy is constructed as it circulates through the art world and becomes assimilated into the larger realm of visual experience."--Publisher's description.
