18084417Paris: Au Cabinet de Lecture / Chez Marchand Libraire 1808. Very nice first edition of this scarce popular vaudeville attributed to the singer Marc-Antoine Désaugiers 1772-1827. Contemporary or slightly later binding of painted / patterned hardback with a leather and gilt label to the spine. A little fading to the spine and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Slight rubbing of the hand coloured binding. Attractive folding frontis illustration with contemporary hand colouring. In very good condition with just a touch of edgewear. Internally clean and tidy with just a little foxing. The work was adapted in 1862 as a comic opera "Monsieur et Madame Denis" with music by Jacques Offenbach on a French libretto by Laurencin Paul-Aimé Chapelle and Michel Delaporte. Two small personal ex libris to the inside board. One of these is for Jean Stern 1875-1962. He was a French banker man of letters and fencer. His bookplate shows all of these interests. He was the subject of caricatures by SEM. X 11-178 pages. 150 by 95mm 6 by 3¾ inches. No copies available for purchase at the time of cataloguing. . Très belle édition originale de ce rare vaudeville populaire attribué au chanteur Marc-Antoine Désaugiers 1772-1827. Reliure contemporaine ou légèrement postérieure en cartonnage peint / à motifs avec une étiquette en cuir et dorée au dos. Le dos est légèrement décoloré et la tête et la queue du dos sont légèrement abîmées. Léger frottement de la reliure colorée à la main. Attrayante illustration dépliante en frontis avec coloriage à la main contemporain. En très bon état avec juste un peu d'usure sur les bords. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé avec quelques rousseurs. L'œuvre a été adaptée en 1862 en tant qu'opéra-comique "Monsieur et Madame Denis" avec une musique de Jacques Offenbach sur un livret français de Laurencin Paul-Aimé Chapelle et Michel Delaporte. Deux petits ex libris personnels à l'intérieur de la planche. L'un d'eux est pour Jean Stern 1875-1962. Il était banquier homme de lettres et escrimeur. Son ex-libris témoigne de tous ces intérêts.
