Christian Jeremias Rollin 1703-1781 Arzt und Professor für Anatomie in Göttingen und Braunschweig. "Der aus Frankreich vertriebene Vater Rollins war in Kassel als Münzkommissar tätig. Rollin besuchte das Gymnasium in Kassel und anschließend das dortige Collegium Carolinum. Er studierte in Berlin und Potsdam Anatomie in Kassel Naturgeschichte Mechanik und Schmelzkunst und an der Universität Leiden drei Jahre lang Arzneikunst bei Herman Boerhaave. Aufgrund eines Lungenleidens ging er nach London zog dann über Rotterdam und Amsterdam unter falschem Namen nach Paris von wo er nach Kassel zurückkehrte. An der 1737 gegründeten Universität Göttingen setzte Rollin sein Medizinstudium fort. Er wurde Prosektor bei Albrecht von Haller und erhielt bald nach seiner 1742 erfolgten Promotion eine Professur der Anatomie. Während seiner Zeit in Göttingen ordnete Rollin zwei private Fossiliensammlungen und erstellte die Illustrationen für die anatomischen und botanischen Werke Hallers. Gesundheitliche Gründe zwangen Rollin bereits 1745 zur Beendigung seiner Lehrtätigkeit. Er ließ sich als praktischer Arzt in Moringen nieder. Einen Ruf an die medizinische Fakultät der Universität Uppsala lehnte er 1746 ab. Im Jahre 1750 folgte er einer Einladung an das neugegründete Collegium Carolinum nach Braunschweig wo er als Professor der Anatomie wirkte. Seit 1751 war er auch am Anatomisch-Chirurgischen Institut und als Assessor des Collegium Medicum tätig. Neben seinen Anatomievorlesungen las er auch über Botanik und Legalsektionen. Rollin hatte beide Ämter bis zu seinem Tod 1781 inne. Charles Rollin January 30 1661- December 14 1741 was a French historian and educationist. He was born at Paris. He was the son of a cutler and at the age of twenty-two was made a master in the Collège du Plessis. In 1694 he was rector of the University of Paris rendering great service among other things by reviving the study of Greek. He held that post for two years instead of one and in 1699 was appointed principal of the Collège de Beauvais. Rollin held Jansenist principles and even went so far as to defend the miracles supposed to be worked at the tomb of François de Paris commonly known as Deacon Paris. Unfortunately his religious opinions deprived him of his appointments and disqualified him for the rectorship to which in 1719 he had been re-elected. It is said that the same reason prevented his election to the Académie française though he was a member of the Academie des Inscriptions. Shortly before his death he protested publicly against the acceptance of the bull Unigenitus. Rollin's literary work dates chiefly from the later years of his life when he had been forbidden to teach. His once famous Ancient History Paris 1730-38 and the less generally read Roman History which followed it were avowed compilations uncritical and somewhat inaccurate. But they instructed and interested generation after generation almost to the present day. A more original and really important work was his Traité des études Paris 1726-31. It contains a summary of what was even then a reformed and innovative system of education including a more frequent and extensive use of the vulgar tongue and discarded the medieval traditions that had lingered in France. . Handsomely bound in contemporary full brown calf; the boards ruled in gilt; the spines with five raised bands compartments with gilt foliate decoration contrasting red and blue gilt morocco title and volume labels and additional green gilt morocco ownership label for Louisa Pereira to each volume. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with a copper-engraved frontispiece to each volume and 14 engraved plates plans and maps some folding 22 illustrations in total. Further subsequent ownership inscription in ink manuscript to the front free endpaper of the first volume "Henrietta Skene / given to her by her Father / 8 Volumes Complete / November 16 1825" and with her name in ink to the front endpaper of each volume. A very good set the bindings square and firm with a touch of minor cracking to volumes one and eight a little occasional chipping to the spine ends light rubbing to the spines and joints some scuffs to the boards heavier to volume five and some old water marking to the top corner of the boards of several volumes. The contents with a touch of damp-marking to the upper corners of the preliminary pages of a few volumes and the occasional mark smudge or dot of foxing here and there are otherwise in very good order throughout. The plates and maps remain clean and sharp. An attractive set of the French historian Charles Rollin's monumental survey of the ancient civilisations of Europe and the Near East nicely illustrated with numerous engraved plates map and plans. An unusual and appealing set owned by an educated young woman - Louisa Pereira likely of Portuguese descent - during the age of Enlightenment with her elegant gilt morocco ownership label to the spine of each volume. With 3 engraved maps 2 engraved folding plates and 1 engraved folding plan. 13 volumes bound as 14. ca. 600 pp. per volume Lovely set in the original French of Rollin's very popular Histoire ancienne which contrary to its full title primarily describes ancient Greece the other ancient peoples are only treated in the first two volumes. It's a mixed set from three editions published by the Estienne family in nice closely matching bindings. After the first volume appeared in 1730 the series grew well beyond its initially planned five volumes and became tremendously popular appearing in numerous editions and translations well into the 19th century. Rollin organised a narrative closely based on a wide variety of ancient sources. While this copying was heavily criticized Rollin also distinguished himself with his concern for moral issues. "The prominent lens through which Rollin viewed history was that of virtue corrupted by power and this was the main approach that he tested in his Greek history. In the process moreover he carved and unprecedented space for Greek antiquity" Lianeri.The set is in very good condition with a few leaves browned and a few minor spots and stains. Bound in contemporary French mottled calf five raised bands on spine red morocco lettering pieces in the second and third compartments edges stained red marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Some lower fore-corners bumped and scraped headcap of vol. 4 chipped overall in EXCELLENT CONDITION. BEAUTIFUL COPY OF ROLLIN'S IMPORTANT WORK ON THE TEACHING AND STUDY OF "BELLE LETTRES" A CLASSIC OF 18TH-CENTURY PEDAGOGY PRINTED BY MARIE-ANNE GUYARD ESTIENNE WIDOW OF JACQUES ESTIENNE THE ELDER. SHE ACHIEVED GREAT SUCCESS IN LATER YEARS THROUGH HER INDUSTRY AND BUSINESS ACUMEN. Marie-Anne Guyard a.k.a. Guiard was the daughter of a wine-merchant. In 1714 after the death of her first husband Charles-Francois Pochard metal merchant she married the successful printer-publisher Jacques Estienne. Upon his death in 1731 she continued the press and publishing operations located on the rue Saint-Jacques "a la Vertu". The present 4-volume set of Rollin's teaching and study guide was followed two years later by a 16-volume set of Rollin's "Histoire romaine" 1738-1748. From 1743 onward she worked in partnership with her eldest son Jacques the Younger to whom she sold 1/3 of the business for 110000 livres according to IRHT -- a colossal sum in those days. They were joined in 1750 by her second son Robert to whom she also sold 1/3 of the business for the same amount. According to a contemporary report by 1752 she was "a very rich woman for whom M. Rollin made a fortune on account of all the works of his that she printed. Abbe Antoine Pluche also contributed. She has just bequeathed and sold her business to her son and to Bauche's son." Marie-Anne Estienne died on May 13 1753 leaving her children a large estate. As stated above her two sons became printer-publishers; two of her four daughters married printer-publishers one married a bourgeois merchant and one married Daniel Coffin conseiller du Roi. Included herein are two priced lists of "Livres nouvellement imprimes" by her the first in vol. I 5 pages the second in vol. IV 2 pages and we learn that the published price of the present edition -- unbound -- was 10 livres. OUR SET IS IN MUSEUM QUALITY CONDITION AND IS SUITABLE FOR EXHIBITION AND STUDY.
