Spines gilt-tooled with raised bands and leather labels the latter partly lacking on all volumes. Joints and endbands rubbed the latter with minor loss. Text blocks remarkably strong and well-preserved overall the principal defects being a damp-stain to prelims of vol. 3 and minor worming to prelims of vol. 5. Otherwise text shows only the expected faint foxing or offsetting of age. Folded matter sound some with minor tears at gutter or creased panels. A well-preserved example overall. Quillau and the widow of Simon Contemporary mottled calf richly gold-tooled spines and binding edges marbled edges; only volume 11 bound as 2 volumes with slightly different tooling mottling and title-labels; all unobtrusive differences making a closely matching set. With 3 engraved maps 2 engraved folding plates and 1 engraved folding plan. 13 volumes bound as 14. ca. 600 pp. per volume Lovely set in the original French of Rollin's very popular Histoire ancienne which contrary to its full title primarily describes ancient Greece the other ancient peoples are only treated in the first two volumes. It's a mixed set from three editions published by the Estienne family in nice closely matching bindings. After the first volume appeared in 1730 the series grew well beyond its initially planned five volumes and became tremendously popular appearing in numerous editions and translations well into the 19th century. Rollin organised a narrative closely based on a wide variety of ancient sources. While this copying was heavily criticized Rollin also distinguished himself with his concern for moral issues. "The prominent lens through which Rollin viewed history was that of virtue corrupted by power and this was the main approach that he tested in his Greek history. In the process moreover he carved and unprecedented space for Greek antiquity" Lianeri.The set is in very good condition with a few leaves browned and a few minor spots and stains. Title page missing from Volume 1. Purple silk bookmarks present for most volumes. All volumes show light self wear else VERY GOOD condition. Charles Rollin January 30 1661- December 14 1741 was a French historian and educationist. He was born at Paris. He was the son of a cutler and at the age of twenty-two was made a master in the Collège du Plessis. In 1694 he was rector of the University of Paris rendering great service among other things by reviving the study of Greek. He held that post for two years instead of one and in 1699 was appointed principal of the Collège de Beauvais. Rollin held Jansenist principles and even went so far as to defend the miracles supposed to be worked at the tomb of François de Paris commonly known as Deacon Paris. Unfortunately his religious opinions deprived him of his appointments and disqualified him for the rectorship to which in 1719 he had been re-elected. It is said that the same reason prevented his election to the Académie française though he was a member of the Academie des Inscriptions. Shortly before his death he protested publicly against the acceptance of the bull Unigenitus. Rollin's literary work dates chiefly from the later years of his life when he had been forbidden to teach. His once famous Ancient History Paris 1730-38 and the less generally read Roman History which followed it were avowed compilations uncritical and somewhat inaccurate. But they instructed and interested generation after generation almost to the present day. A more original and really important work was his Traité des études Paris 1726-31. It contains a summary of what was even then a reformed and innovative system of education including a more frequent and extensive use of the vulgar tongue and discarded the medieval traditions that had lingered in France. . Full mottled French calf dual spine labels raised spine bands gilt decorated compartments marbled edges and endpapers. Most likely original or at least contemporary bindings. Expected external wear including quite a bit of rubbing to the extremities all lower spine labels absent three upper spine labels absent some rubbing and light chipping to the joints but all joints secure and text blocks sound no loosened pages. Pages clean with almost no foxing no names or other markings. Volumes 7 and 12 have some light-colored dampstains throughout most of the contents. Hard Cover. Good. 16mo 16.5 cm tall. Bindings are sound and tight no weak hinges or such Slight damage to top of spines in volumes 1 and 6. There is scuffing damage to the leather on some boards. Handsomely bound in contemporary full brown calf; the boards ruled in gilt; the spines with five raised bands compartments with gilt foliate decoration contrasting red and blue gilt morocco title and volume labels and additional green gilt morocco ownership label for Louisa Pereira to each volume. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with a copper-engraved frontispiece to each volume and 14 engraved plates plans and maps some folding 22 illustrations in total. Further subsequent ownership inscription in ink manuscript to the front free endpaper of the first volume "Henrietta Skene / given to her by her Father / 8 Volumes Complete / November 16 1825" and with her name in ink to the front endpaper of each volume. A very good set the bindings square and firm with a touch of minor cracking to volumes one and eight a little occasional chipping to the spine ends light rubbing to the spines and joints some scuffs to the boards heavier to volume five and some old water marking to the top corner of the boards of several volumes. The contents with a touch of damp-marking to the upper corners of the preliminary pages of a few volumes and the occasional mark smudge or dot of foxing here and there are otherwise in very good order throughout. The plates and maps remain clean and sharp. An attractive set of the French historian Charles Rollin's monumental survey of the ancient civilisations of Europe and the Near East nicely illustrated with numerous engraved plates map and plans. An unusual and appealing set owned by an educated young woman - Louisa Pereira likely of Portuguese descent - during the age of Enlightenment with her elegant gilt morocco ownership label to the spine of each volume.</p> London: Printed for J. and F.
