Double-column text for ease of reading lightly wavy text-block but with evidence of neither odor nor dampness. In good condition with some rubbing to the spine front and rear panels of each volume a small loss to the spine label of Vol. I some toning and dampstaining to the textblock of each volume ownership signature to each volume small closed tear to the folding map in Vol. IV. This set was inherited by P.T. Sherman who transferred the library to his niece Eleanor Sherman Fitch the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter Maria “Minnie†Ewing Sherman Fitch before he died. Until now the books were held at the family estate in Washington County Pennsylvania. An exceptional association. Charles Rollin was a French historian and educator who published important works on history and educational reform which discarded the medieval traditions that had been lingering in France and emphasized the study of national history. Eight volumes in leather spines over speckeled paper-covered boards spines in three compartments separated by gilt borders and decoration black leather labels with gilt author's name and volume number in one compartment gilt tooling in remainder. This edition is taken from the fifteenth London edition revised and corrected and includes a Life of the Author by Rev. R. Lynam. As a result of the careful examination and correction of the learned quotations and the inclusion of the long desired Life of the Author the publishers affirm that this is "the most complete edition ever published." Charles Rollin 1661 - 1741 was a French historian and educator. Rollin at the age of 22 was made a master in the Collège du Plessis. In 1694 he was rector of the University of Paris rendering great service among other things by reviving the study of Greek. He held that post for two years instead of one and in 1699 was appointed principal of the Collège de Beauvais. Rollin's literary work dates chiefly from the later years of his life when he had been forbidden to teach. This work his famous Ancient History Paris 1730-1738 and the less generally read Roman History were avowed compilations. They instructed and interested generation after generation. - See Wikipedia . Rebacked in 19th century with original spines laid on. Some old damp-stains not affecting text. Moderate foxing throughout. Previously unread.
