Volume 1 No. 37 of the long-running newsletter. <br /> <br /> "Black News" was an entirely volunteer-run newsletter published out of the headquarters of The East a cultural center and arts organization located at 10 Claver Place in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The organization was a hub for grassroots activism and community support providing workshops for adults and day care for children. The building's first floor also served as a jazz club hosting luminaries such as Sun Ra and Gil Scott-Heron. The organization was the subject of the 2022 documentary film "The Sun Rises in The East" directed by Tayo Giwa and Cynthia Gordy Giwa. <br /> <br /> Originally published in October 1969 "Black News" presented a mix of artwork and poetry alongside articles on topics such as Black unity and liberation police brutality health and well-being drug use corruption in the government the Back to Africa movement and the American prison system. <br /> <br /> Approximately 8.5 x 11 inches. 19545690New York: Committee for Justice for Puerto Ricans 1954. Very good. 4pp. on a single folded sheet plus mimeographed transmittal letter. Minor wear central vertical crease throughout. A fundraising pamphlet seeking support for prominent African-American lawyer Conrad Lynn who at that time was defending seventeen Puerto Rican citizens arrested in the wake of an incident in 1954 when four Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire in the United States Congress. Lynn's clients were additional Puerto Rican nationals arrested under a "crack down" described here as "a sweeping and unprecedented indictment for general conspiracy to overthrow the government by force and violence." The transmittal letter details Lynn's recent success in securing the acquittal on appeal of Ruth Reynolds another Puerto Rican national arrested after being accused of participating in the 1950 uprising in Puerto Rico. The committee points out the similarities in that case and the current one urging that Lynn will attempt to bring the same result. Conrad Lynn was known as the "Lawyer for the Damned" who worked over the course of his career for civil rights and in defense of draft resisters Puerto Rican nationals the Black Panthers and others. Lynn was also notable as the first Black graduate of the Syracuse Law School in 1932. We could locate no other copies of this appeal in OCLC or elsewhere. Vintage 1971 calendar produced by the Liberation Support Movement LSM illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographic illustrations. <br /> <br /> The LSM was founded in Vancouver in 1968 with branches in Oakland Seattle and New York before the group disbanded in 1982. The organization stood in solidarity with indigenous resistance movements in former colonial countries with a focus on anti-imperialism in African countries. The calendar offered here an early production highlights important dates in the history of liberation activism throughout Africa as well as the birthdays of important revolutionary thinkers including Marx Lenin and Ho Chi Minh. <br /> <br /> 7 x 10 inches. A very good handsome copy. <br /> <br /> An exhaustive legal report on the Gouzenko investigation itself the surrounding context and histories and a detailed assessment of the consequences of other such acts of espionage going unchecked. Igor Gouzenko a cypher clerk for the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa defected two days after the end of WW2 to Canada with a sheaf of documents detailing the USSR's espionage network in the West. Gouzenko's revealing of Russia's nuclear espionage agenda in particular is credited as being the catalyst for the disasterous global intelligence chess game that became known as The Cold War. 19443153Newell Ca: November 1944. Very good. 13pp. mimeographed forms printed on rectos only. Minor wear small paper clip rust stains to top edges. A cover letter datelined "November blank 1944 Newell California" intended to accompany the attached blank version of the actual application intended for use by Tule Lake internees wishing to renounce their United States citizenship. The cover letter is pre-addressed to the Attorney General and Edward J. Ennis the director of the Justice Department's Alien Enemy Control Unit in Washington D.C. The form letter begins "I wish to renounce my United States nationality in accordance with the recent government promulgation so I am enclosing a typewritten copy of this application form executed by me." A blank copy of the application is included here numbering three pages. The application includes a renunciation statement intended to be signed by applicants followed by ten questions pertaining to the applicant's history of birth residence last point of entry into the U.S. close relations education military service Selective Service classification and a declaration that the applicant has given "true and correct" answers intended to be dated and signed at the end.<br /> <br /> Tule Lake became the holding center for Japanese American internees viewed as disloyal after the issuance of the infamous loyalty questionnaire in the summer of 1943. These "disloyal segregees" were sent to Tule Lake where they suffered ostracization from fellow internees poorer living conditions inferior food and harsher treatment from American military guards among other indignities. There were even disagreements among the segregated internees as some of them truly wished for repatriation to Japan and identified as Japanese while others viewed this group as disloyal and undeserving of assistance or relief. In other words not only were these internees seen as disloyal by their own government but also by some of their fellow internees. Their feeling of dislocation ran deep. Eventually many of these segregees sought to renounce their American citizenship and repatriate to Japan. The present forms were many internees' first step in this process. November unknown

Very good in the publisher's navy cloth with the front inner hinge cracked but holding and a few ink markings to the front paste-down. Else crisp and clean. INSCRIBED on the title page by Chief Justice Earl Warren "For Don J. Campbell with the best wishes of Earl Warren." Campbell was an advertising salesman for the Dallas Morning News. According to Warren Commission Exhibit number 2436 Campbell testified that Jack Ruby was in his office around 12:00 noon when Kennedy's motorcade was proceeding and just before he was assassinated. Campbell testified that Ruby who was a regular advertising customer was complaining about the seedy nature of his business and also bragging about some of his political connections see Campbell's full official testimony here: https://www.history-matters.com/archive/jfk/wc/wcvols/wh25/pdf/WH25_CE_2436. pdf The Warren Commission Report is often found signed by future President Gerald Ford who sat on the commission but rarely found signed by Warren. 1917144634Dawson: Judge Macalulay 1917. Folio. 18 pages of hand corrected typescript on light gray paper. A bit soiled but overall clean and not brittle. Two pages of folio hand written notes in Justice Macaulay's hand. Three smaller pages of hand written notes towards the end. Signed in a hand I cannot make out. The whole bundle held together with the original paper clip. Included with the bundle is a long typed transcript of an article entitled "The Flowering Stump" by Vernon La Chance published in Maclean's in 15 October 1933 Macaulay was a Judge of the Territorial Court Dawson. He was elevated to the Bench in 1902 and preceded over the Court in the Yukon Territory for 39 years. This document provides Macalulay's report on the trial and appeal of Rokuichi Yoshioka a Japanese born Dawson fox farmer. He was accused tried and convicted of the crime by a jury. The trial was 6 days long after which the accused was convicted and hanged on the 23rd of November 1917. I am not sure what happened with the appeal. Although not a Gold Rush item certainly a very interesting document related to a murder in Dawson City. It must have been sensational and a major event in Dawson. Constable Stallworthy of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police was the investigating officer and provided testimony during the trial. Over the years I have had a number of primary source documents like this but nothing for Dawson and only one other murder before. This document or another copy was addressed To The Honorable The Secretary of State for Canada in Ottawa. Usually documents like this do not survive. Events included a blockade of the Pentagon and a night of "good cheer.dancing music and theater." First edition thus of this exceedingly scarce sales promotional catalogue for the General Jumbo Balloon Tire issued just as the country began the descent into the Great Depression. The oversize pneumatic tires developed by General Tire were first used on Ford Model T trucks and Ford Model T’s but quickly proved their durability and by the end of the 1920’s were the fastest selling truck tire in the United States. These excellent photo images provide not only references for the many companies that General Tire supplied but also the tremendous range of truck manufacturers and commercial advertising many companies sported during the 1920’s - 1930’s. Truck brands depicted in the album include REO Speedwagon Mack American-LaFrance White Wichita Fageol & more. Businesses ranged from Hemingway Bros. a moving company in Providence RI to Franklin Ice Cream Co. in Minneapolis MN along with bread trucks tankers cement mixers and others. Founded in 1915 General Tire & Rubber grew quickly adding plants in Texas Kentucky Ohio & North Carolina eventually expanding into aerospace defense contracting entertainment tennis ball production and plastics.
