He and his partners had made the big gold strike in Virginia City Montana Territory gracked down and hung the Plummer gang including Sheriff Henry Plummer and Boone Helm witnessed the murder of John Bozeman and later settled in Los Angeles. Thrapp posits that the Helm family members finally exacted revenge upon Cover during a prospecting trip in 1884 into the Colorado Desert as he disappeared in Sept. 1884 and was never heard from again. While violent mob violence as experienced by Chicago New York and environs during Prohibition was largely nonexistent in Great Britain the British newspapers awed readers with never-ending tales of American armed robberies and Guest under his Spenser pseudonym stepped into advise the British public an invasion of American gangsters was imminent with peaceful Britain open for the pickings. Lucas 1903-1940 ran cons from age 14 until his death under 38 different aliases who managed to climb the British social ladder more than once and who entertained one and all with his tales of crime and managed to cover himself with a lucrative career as freelance journalist converted criminal and criminologist. In this memoir bearing both of his pseudonyms he managed to entice Sir Purves-Stewart into writing his foreword diagnosing the author with a personality disorder from alcoholism. When translated into French it was discovered by Surrealist poets and re-issued as “Moi et Moi.†Exceedingly scarce in original dustjacket. This book is a history of the Agency who figured significantly in the 1906 Brownsville Raid the 1912 Hillsville tragedy the 1913 Colorado Coal Strike and the 1920 Matewan massacre along with the Hatfield & McCoys feud and chasing down moonshiners.
