He and his partners had made the big gold strike in Virginia City Montana Territory gracked down and hung the Plummer gang including Sheriff Henry Plummer and Boone Helm witnessed the murder of John Bozeman and later settled in Los Angeles. Thrapp posits that the Helm family members finally exacted revenge upon Cover during a prospecting trip in 1884 into the Colorado Desert as he disappeared in Sept. 1884 and was never heard from again. Criminologist and geographer George F. Rengert takes a unique approach to the problem of illegal drug distribution and U.S. drug markets. Using maps and charts to illustrate his findings Rengert applies spacial diffusion models to the illegal drug trade and explains why certain drugs are transported and found in different parts of the country. For example the highest concentration of marijuana plants is not on either coast but rather across the middle of the United Statesthroughout what is known as the corn belt. At the local level Rengert assesses the patterns and processes that interconnect drug sales and neighborhood deterioration and change.The book also addresses the important issues of how illegal drugs in this country operate on wholesale and retail levels and ways in which law enforcement at the federal state and local levels contend with this widespread problem. Moved abruptly to Colorado in the 1870’s Goode ran away from home in 1875 becoming a “second story worker†for a band of yeggmen in Denver; two years later was sent to reformatory in Massachusetts for robbery before escaping twice; indentured to a fishing schooner off the Grand Banks before escaping; rustled cattle in New Mexico looted gambling halls in Colorado herded sheep in Wyoming and eventually repeated in prison sentences in Ohio for Highway Robbery as well as running pickpocket ring in New York. Henkle 1883-1935 editor of the New York Herald and prison reformer along with journalist Thelma Roberts believed his story should be told and dedicated the book to Goode’s mother and “all those who understanding that boys are at hear adventurers romancers brave little crusaders and help them to find the paths of right adventuring.†Scarce in original dustjacket. Rather remarkably in his last twenty years he grew out of the disreputable views of his earlier life when he was a believer in eugenics and sterilization and opposed immigration to the point of suggesting that America would do better to turn its guns "upon every vessel bringing Japanese to our shores rather than to permit them to land". In the 1930s he was a supporter of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal program and from 1940 to 1950 he served as chairman of the national committee of the American Civil Liberties Union. In this memoir bearing both of his pseudonyms he managed to entice Sir Purves-Stewart into writing his foreword diagnosing the author with a personality disorder from alcoholism. Although he portrayed himself as a respected doctor in Montclair NJ with his wife Rosalea he actually had three other wives one of whom he had murdered and in 1929 had murdered Mildred Mowry with whom he had courted and married through a Lonelyhearts Club. First edition thus of this exceedingly scarce “Escaped Prisoners Wanted†Progressive Era handbook designed to be expanded by the recipient bounty hunter bail bondsman peace officer or railroad operator in the decade leading up to World War I. Each of the Wanted notices includes the prisoner’s mugshots identifying marks known relatives and addresses arrival date charges physical description along with the $ 50.00 reward for arrest and detention -- nearly an average worker’s monthly salary so a significant sum. Typical of the sparse crime statistics at the time about 40% of these escapees had been originally convicted of larceny a number of others of armed burglary arson many con artist forgers horse thieves along with attempted rape rape sodomy and even supporting prostitution as indicated by Louis Sassman who escaped Sept. 19 1912. Oregon State Penitentiary had undergone some reforms after the restrictive Victorian era and by 1911 included a State Parole Board Capital Punishment was abolished in 1914 a Flax Mill was established inside the 14-foot walls to provide employment revenue and cut down on escapes from work gangs in 1915. Many of the escaped prisoners had previously served time in Western prisons such as San Quentin Montana State Penitentiary Washington State Penitentiary and OSP such as Louis J. Arstell Escaped August 14 1913 Michael McMurray C.H. Drocker Herbert Merithew James O’Brien Tim O’Brien and others. Many were Irish German Russian Scottish and other immigrants. However there was a Klamath Modoc Native American Joseph Johnson sentenced in Klamath County for Burglary and Albert Thompson a Black Mexican-American convicted on burglary charges in Umatilla County who escaped Nov. 11 1911. Wardens during this decade included Berton K. Lawson 1912-1914; then Harry Minto 1864 who believed the Progressive Reforms should be rolled back and treated prisoners to beatings isolation and harsh discipline only to be killed by escapee Otto Hooker Sept. 27 1915 not included in this booklet as Hooker subsequently died and was no longer at large; and Charles A. Murphy 1916-1917.
