A very scarce work.A volume of three essays written by Rene-Aubert Vertot and Antoine Anselme translated into English.The three essays are titled: 'An Enquiry whether the Kingdom of France from the Establishment of that Monarchy has been an Hereditary or Elective State' 'A Dissertation on the Oaths of the Ancients' and 'A Dissertation concerning the Monument which supply'd the Defect of Writing among the First Historians'.This edition was translated into English by M. Paschoud Chaplin to the Earl of Albemarle. Rene-Aubert Vertot and Antoine Anselme were both French preachers active in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and were both influential and successful during their lifetimes.Register runs as A2-A8 B-K8 L4. Bound without leaf A1. In a full calf binding. Externally front board is detached but present. Leather has detached from the rear board. Loss to the front board. Lacking the backstrip. Light bumping to the extremities. Light marks to the leather. Leather is rubbed. Endpapers are detached but present. Lacking the paper to the paste downs and leaf A1. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are little age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots and handling marks.The occasional pencil mark to the margins. All page edges speckled red. Titles in double line borders. Woodcut head pieces tailpieces and initial articles. Translation of Histoire critique de l'établissement des Bretons dans les Gaules. Dedication signed by the translator John Henley. Engraved armorial bookplate on each fixed endpaper: "Strickland Freeman Esqr. Fawley Court Bucks 1810." Strickland Freeman d. 1821 inherited Fawley Court from his uncle Sambrooke Freeman in 1782. He wrote works on horsemanship and botany. Although his will was probated in 1822 and some sources state that he died that year he died in Nov. 1821 according to Debrett's. Circular red stamp on title page verso of each volume of Pennsylvania State University Library. In Very Good Condition: minor loss at spine ends; vol. 2 has modern repair of joints with Japanese tissue; vol. 1 lacking back free endpaper; both volumes have modern repair of hinges with Japanese tissue; pages are clean and tight. 1722025901London: for W. Taylor 1722. First Edition. Octavo. Volume I: 356 pages Volume 2: 243 pages. The rare study by the abbe De Vertot who challenged the ancient Breton legends which he said were based on later historians. The ancient legends of Merlin King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable are all challenged. Modern French historians from Michelet Thierry and Mignet have challened but never quite gotten beyond his insights into ancient Gaul and its history. These volumes printed in a small print run became scarce as early as 1816 when two rare booksellers noted they now had copies in their catalog. The 1910 Green auction had them. One of the most scarce of the early 18th century histories of Brittany. OCLC notes it was translated from the French but printed at Paris and in the same year distributed by W. Taylor a London publisher with a preface by John Henley to Sir Peter King the Chief Justice explaining the reason for this unique and to many a troubling book. Bound in full calf handsomely rebacked to style olive green leather label gilt corners worn through very early small bookplate without name. Very nice wide margined copy. for W. Taylor unknown
