Edward Gibbon Wakefield 1796-1862 author and colonial promoter 'was an enigma to his contemporaries as he is to posterity. Denied office by his criminal record in 1827 he was sentenced to three years imprisonment in Newgate he devoted his energy to schemes for systematic colonization and responsible government. Not content only to influence men's minds by his pen he sought directly to influence their actions as well. His personal magnetism and imaginative zeal won him many converts but much disappointment when he found that people could not be controlled like puppets. <p>His idealism would not allow him to compromise and when he ignored the principles of others their reactions were often bitter. In his restless search to achieve his objectives he ranged through the whole spectrum of English politics and society utilitarian radicals Whigs and High Church Tories and left behind him some claim to success in penal reform immigration to New South Wales the Durham report and the colonization of South Australia and New Zealand. The factious conclusion to his career and his obscure death have given to his life a certain tragic perspective although some writers have credited him with high rank as an architect of the British Commonwealth' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. A very clean and 'as new' copy of Gibbon's posthumously published new novel of the Mearns which was shaping up to be a worthy successor to the author's masterpiece Sunset Song. Gibbon again employs his sharp insight and lends his deft and unique comedic voice:<br /> <br /> "Now the second of the crofts in that little bouroch was Badymicks that stood outbye the land of Cruickshank a little low dirty skleiter of place the biggings were old and tumbling down . whose wife could cook that foul South dish the haggis in a way that made the damn thing nearly eatable not as usual with a smell like a neglected midden and a taste to match or so you imagined not that you'd ever eaten middens."<br /> <br /> <br /> Book is very clean with boards pristine and gilt lettering very bright. No marks or inscriptions; opens very clean and tight. There is just a bookseller's sticker to the front jacket flap; some may consider it a bonus given the name and provenance Bookseller Hogg of Montrose. Jacket fine. Protected in Mylar cover.<br /> <br /> Lewis Grassic Gibbon was working on this novel when he died during surgery at the age of 34. His literary estate gave the manuscript for publication and an introduction is given in this book by Professor Ian Campbell long acknowledged and respected Gibbon expert.
