The essays show in what ways and to what degree the results of archaeological research may affect the views of those who without special archaeological knowledge concern themselves with the antiquity of civilization. Chapters contain significant findings from the Hebrew Classical and Christian histories and are concerned with the Biblical Egyptian Assyrian Greek Roman and Christian worlds. <br> D.G. Hogarth was the British archaeologist and scholar associated with T. E. Lawrence and Arthur Evans. He was Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum Oxford from 1909 to 1927. Commissioned into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during the First World War he served with the Naval Intelligence Division. During 1916 he was the acting director of the Arab Bureau and was later responsible for delivering the Hogarth message.<br> In 1886 Hogarth was elected a Fellow of Magdalen College Oxford. Between 1887 and 1907 he traveled to excavations in Cyprus Crete Egypt Syria Melos and Ephesus the Temple of Artemis. On the island of Crete he excavated the Zakros and Psychro Cave. Hogarth was named director of the British School at Athens in 1897 and occupied the position until 1900. He was the keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford from 1909 until his death in 1927.<br> In 1915 during the First World War Hogarth was commissioned with the temporary rank of lieutenant commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and joined the Geographical Section of the Naval Intelligence Division. Professor Hogarth was appointed the acting director of the Arab Bureau for a time during 1916 when Sir Mark Sykes went back to London. Hogarth was close with T. E. Lawrence and worked with Lawrence to plan the Arab Revolt.<br> Sykes befriended Hogarth who had described India Government as believing they had a moral imperative to the British Raj as the best form of government and could not fail in their duty to impose it on a Province of Mesopotamia. The Arabists rejected this proposal vehemently; Sykes taking Hogarth's research as evidence of the uniquely different situation in the protectorate. The archaeologists knew it was clear that the Raj had no understanding of the different conditions that there needed to be a specific "Arab Policy" for what had become a frontier of empire. Hogarth returned to Oxford and the Ashmolean Museum in June 1919.From 1925 to 1927 he was President of the Royal Geographical Society.<br> In 1896 Hogarth was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society FRGS. In 1905 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy FBA the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and social sciences. In 1917 he was made a Commander of the Order of the Nile by the Sultan of Egyptand awarded the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. In the 1918 New Year Honours he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George CMG for his efforts during the First World War. Black coated endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with five plates bound at the end of the volume. The majority of the images on the plates show spearheads and other palaeolithic implements from Middlesex one plate shows images from a palaeolithic cave in Europe the other images are that of weapons from hunter-gatherer tribes in New Guinea Australia with some tools used by Inuit peoples. A large portion of the book is devoted to scholarly archaeology and geological studies of Great Britain with the use of evidence excavated from burial mounds and other historic sites and with the use of written sources Caesar Tacitus etc. At the end of the volume the author considers several different written sources on hunter-gatherer tribes from Australia the Arctic region southern Africa New Guinea New Zealand and other places. Much of this written evidence is taken from Europeans during the early days of exploration and colonization and reflects the historical prejudices within. The author himself often reflects these prejudices in the language that he uses. The author discusses various historical customs of these different peoples and frequently compares them to the customs of palaeolithic Britons. The second part has a couple of markings on the front cover and a previous owner's brief inscription in small pen on the front free endpaper. The pages are very occasionally uncut. The text blocks are sturdy. Part I: Frontispiece; 16 plates; 2 folding plates. Part II: 12 plates; 51 plates. Plate XXV comes after Plate XXVI. May require extra postage due to size and weight. British archaeologist and Egyptologist Sir William Matthews Flinders Petrie 1853-1942 made significant contributions to the techniques and methods of field excavation and invented a sequence dating method that made possible the reconstruction of history from the remains of ancient cultures. Petrie lived in a tent and a basic house at the Tanis site from February 4 until June 23rd 1884 in relative isolation. Quarto pp 20 60 plates of which one is coloured clean internally original printed soft cloth bruised wrinkled and marked the spine fraying and lacking a portion at the base with a small hand-written totle label. The Hartland Library copy with labels and manuscript notes attached to the front endpapers and stamp on the verso ot the title page. RARE and equally rare to be found in any better condition than this. The Library was formed by Edwin Sydney Hartland and was a diverse but major collection of herbals archaeology and anthropology. It was donated to Gloucestershire County Council in 1936 and was eventually dispersed around 2010. Philibert Charles Berjeau 1845-1927 was a natural history illustrator and lithographer active in London in the late Victorian era. His subjects varied widely including mammals reptiles and especially birds as well as fossils. Berjeau's father was an author editor and engraver. He followed in his father's footsteps with a skill in engraving. He started to publish his own engravings at an early age about 17 with a book of drawings of dogs 1863 soon followed by another on horses 1864. In 1866 he collaborated with his father on Beggars Rogues and Vagabonds: he made the drawings and his father engraved them. Philibert Charles Berjeau made illustrations for the British Museum of Natural History and for the journal of the Geological Society of London. He made a sketch of the Sumatran rhinoceros which gave birth in Charles William Rice's stables on Commercial Road in December 1872. He worked as an illustrator for Robert Falcon Scott's S.S. Discovery expedition of 1901-1904 and the National Arctic Expedition of 1907-1912. First Edition. Soft Cloth. Good. Dulau & Co Paperback
